Re: Ok guys, where do you get your pizza in CT?

In New Haven it's a tie for first between; Pepe's (»www.pepespizzeria.com/) a personal favorite, Sally's and Modern APizza. Every other place is distant second around here.

By the way has anyone else had really bad service in Sally's? The only two times I've been there the service has been terrible. The first time I was there about ten years ago the waitress was extremely rude and they burnt the daylights out of the pie. Spent the next ten years avoiding the place and going to Pepe's. Figured I'd give it another go about six months ago, and again the service was terrible, but this time pie was good (and not burnt).

Oh and be careful when down in the Wooster Street area, there's been a rash of car break in's down there. See this article from WTNH: »www.wtnh.com/Global/story.asp?s=7102056

If you hit Pepe's or Sally's, be sure to check out Libbys Italian Pastry Shop next door to Pepe's afterwards for pastries. They have pretty good canolies there. Also there are several other non-pizza restaurants like Consiglio's and Tony & Lucille's on Wooster ST that are excellent.

Sally's has been banned for life in my family since about 20 years ago. It's one thing to have to wait on line forever--you see the line, you have to wait, no problem. But the last time we were there, we had no wait for a table. However, it took almost two hours to get served and all kinds of people (connected people like judges, cops, and who knows who else) got served immediately.

We initally dumped Sally's for Pepe's,which has a more consumer friendly operation, even though my wife, a New Haven native, prefers the Sally pie.

Later we moved fairly close to Modern, which has an even more consumer friendly setup. We do mostly takeout. The Modern pie is actually closer to the Sally's.

I'm from Brooklyn, and I've gudgingly admitted that the top three New Haven pies are the equal of New York's best, e.g., Jonn's or Lombardi's.

Both times I went to Sallys the same thing happened. the first time I asked the waitress what happened to our pie since many other people were coming in (after waiting in line) being served and leaving. The waitress said; "I don't know why don't you go talk to the guy over there" and she went back to talking to the people in the next booth. She wasn't even taking their order. So I ask the guy who she pointed to and he said "well haven't you talked to your waitress?" It went down hill from there. It turned out they burnt the pie and no one bothered to tell us. They said they'd make another one and actually had the nerve to charge us full price for it. When we left we didn't leave a tip and the waitress actually yelled at us, from across the packed restaurant, for not leaving a tip. Oh I lost it! I "calmly" explained, across the packed restaurant, to the waitress that we have been in the place for over two and a half hours, had our pie burnt, were treated like trash by the staff, and they expected us to leave a tip?

My second and last experience there wasn't much better. But others seem to rave about the place. Go figure
