[modem/router] Any way to get a non Westell modem from verizon??

Since I got a westell 6100 modem about a week & a half ago nothing I've tried will make the thing work properly with any router. I've been trying all the possible solutions to this problem such as turning everything off for two hours then overnight & cloning the mac adress & every other thing I've read here, but none of them seem to do anything.

I've been trying to get it to work with linksys BEFSR41 wired router & then tied using a wireless airlink router, but it just refuses to do anything with either of them!! Is there any way possible to get a non westell brand modem from verizon as the westell 6100 is absolutely the worst modem I have ever used! If not then can anyone suggest what brand & model router would work the best with a westell 6100 model: E90-610015-06 as I really need that working properly ASAP!

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

Are you sure you are DHCP (I don't know what TX is)? Does it work without a router? Are you sure the router is in Bridge mode? Did you turn of the DHCP server in the modem? Did you disable the walled garden?

Yes it works perfectly without a router. I have put it in bridge mode & turned off the dhcp server in the modem, but it never works & I usually have to just reset the modem to default factory setting to just get it to work normally again. I'm not not sure what walled garden means??

What Jodokast is referring to as the Walled Garden is when you try to connect to the internet you keep getting Verizon's activation page.

I use a Speedstream 5667 (which is a plani vanilla DSL modem) and it works fine. You could use pretty much any DSL modem (no router/firewall functions needed) and then use any router/FW you please.

If you use the Westell in the DHCP router mode, you might be able to build a network with just a simple switch or hub.

I have a Westell 2200 modem/router with a wireless access point connected. My computers are all connected wireless. It's the most trouble free configuration I have tried.

Oh I see now.....yeah it pretty any time I connected a router to the modem then switched it back or had to reset the modem to get it working again it usually pulls up that irritating thing & have to do the stupid setup again.

Oh so a speedstream 5667 would solve this irritating problem? I've use speedstream modems before & they've all worked perfectly like a normal modem should. I think you just gave me the answer I've been looking for all week!! Much appreciated!!

Actually I had beeen doing something very similiar to that as I have a Sony Location Free Player so I had just connected the modem directly to that & had the other computers connect wirelessly to it. While it for the most part fixed the problem it caused another as now the NetAV set to port 5201 won't work with the modem. I enabled Upnp on both the LF & modem, but always just got a "Upnp Incompatability" errror message. Then I tried to set that up through port forwarding, but still refused to work. Now with a router the LF detected it right away & worked perfectly with Upnp enabled on the router with none of this incompatability garbage.

It may not, since you don't know why everything is behaving the way it is. What happens if you put the modem in bridge mode and just connect a computer? Does that work? If so, then the problem isn't with the modem in Bridge mode, but quite possibly the router. What happens if you just connect the pc to the router? Do you get an IP address? Can you access other machines?

If I put the modem in bridge mode the internet stops working & if I just connect the router to the pc it shows up perfectly fine & the LF detects it instantly & works fine without the modem connected to them. As it worked perfectly fine before on the previous modem I used with at&t before I moved & switched to verizon (a speedstream made just for at&t) the modem sure seems to be at fault here. I did find a Speedstream 5667 on ebay for only $15 in grapevine so I guess I'll know for sure tomorrow afternoon.

I don't know if this will help, but I found it stored in some of my notes about new Verizon/Westell devices:

.... Log into the modem once connected via 192.168.1.1, admin/password, it'll ask for it to be changed, change it (admin/admin is verizon's suggestion), then go to 192.168.1.1/verizon/redirect.htm
and select disable. Should be able to browse from there..

Beacause you are DHCP, you will need to Release the
Modem's MAC Address. You can Either Release it from
the Modem or clone the Modem's MAC into the Router.

To release the IP from the Modem (Before Bridging),
Turn the DHCP from Private Lan to Off, then on
the Home page click on release (You MUST have the
DHCP to off prior to releasing), then continue to
Brdge the Rest of the Modem

I did that & now the internet works in bridge mode although i can no longer access the modem through 192.168.1.1 & although with a router connected the net stops working again.

I've cloned the mac adress to the router, tried setting it up as ppoe as well as static ip & hell knows what else. So just what's left to try on this P.O.S. modem as it refuses everything you throw at it.

I did get a speedstream 5667 this afternoon, but have been having issues with that one as well....on vista it can't even install the stupid drivers for it properly as it seems to want some non-existant file & while booted on xp I was able to access the modem through 192.168.254.254 & added the login info for my dsl, but now the damned thing won't even let me back in there to do anything!!!

First, the fact that the mode works in Bridge mode without a router is leading (me anyway) further away from the modem being a problem. I wonder if the WAN port on the router isn't the problem.

As to the Speedstream, you shouldn't need any driver for a modem to work, unless it's USB, which you should be avoiding anyway.

Correct me If I'm wrong
you Bridged the Modem & Hooked upto your
Computer (this Worked)?, if it did then
the Computer MAC is now on the Verizon Bridge Table,

Go back to Modem to Computer, check IP
IF Valid VOL IP, release NIC IP... ipconfig/release
then hook up your Router
Reboot Router & Computer... this should work

Or at this point you will want to clone your NIC
MAC into the Router

Although I didn't realize it at the time once I finally got the internet to work through bridge mode the netav on the LF Player finally works now. So while the modem still refuses to work with other routers I can just use the LF as a wireless access point to connect to as thats the main thing I needed working.

So I guess this matter is mostly solved then. I appreciate all the help everyone gave me now just hopefully I won't end up having any trouble with that "thing".

Only question I have left is to why I can't access the modem at all anymore through 192.168.1.1 since I put it in bridge mode as it worked fine for a short while after I changed it.

The reason you cannot access the modem is that you have
Disable the Private Lan (DHCP) in the Modem. The modem
no longer has router capabilites. It is now just a modem
until it is reset

does verizon charge you if you ask to get a new modem?

Yes, unless it's still under warranty and thought to be defective.

If I'm reading this all right, you cloned the modems mac to the router rather than the computers once you were online with the computer itself?

The modem itself needs to be bridged and as stated will no longer be accessible with the dhcp server disabled (without playing with other settings atleast). Given it's likely a proline modem, you need to disabled the web based activation as well (192.168.1.1/verizon/redirect or 192.168.1.1/verizon/redirect.htm).

I'm assuming you've done the above already since the computer can route when connected to the bridged modem.

If you can route with the computer on a bridged modem, it means you're bound to the computers mac address. You can either call verizon to release it, or now that the modem is bridged leave it off for the night and should bind to the router automatically once you turn it on again.
