| Windows live one care sale. Not looking to start a debate about it, but at least in my area (S.E. Wisconsin) I see Best Buy has it on sale for $9.99.
Well Ok, Anyone here use it and have had problems with it? Don't want to hear from Microsoft bashers, just if anyone here has used it and discovered things got by its protection.

| Re: Windows live one care sale. My wife still has it on her computer but I removed it from mine. I never noticed anything getting past the protection which seemed good enough for me. The thing I didn't like was the tuneup feature. For me a tuneup would run for days. The defragmenter wouldn't complete until the 5th or 6th tuneup. It was the av scanner that would run for days and slow down my machine. When I used it, the tuneup feature couldn't be disabled, just stopped after it started. It just got to be a pain in the ass after a while. | |

| I still use it on my htpc because it runs so light. Never had any problems with it and never had any malware. I believe I'm still using the 2.0 beta because MS just asked me to upgrade to a newer build. I watch a lot of movies on this system and Onecare doesn't interfere.

| I like Windows One-Care and highly recommend the service. It is very configurable -- and works well if not extremely well protecting your computer and network connections effectively from the bad stuff.

BTW, for others who are interested OneCare is comprised of a number of configurable services.
1. Antivirus
2. Anti-spyware
3. Anti-phishing
4. Firewall
5. Performance tune-ups
6. Backup and restore
And it is actually remarkable how 'light' on resources all of these services run.
I have over 100 clients all of whom bar-none are very happy with OneCare.

| I've had One Care on 3 computers for almost a year now. Except for installing onto one computer (there was a conflict with a utility program, but was figured out by Tech Supp) it's been working just fine.
I'm pretty careful about where I go and what e-mails I open, so I've never been exposed to a virus for it to have to handle.
I usually leave my computers on 24 hours a day, so the tune-up does it's thing in the middle of the night.
I'm happy enough with it that I'm going to re-up it for another year.

| When I went to install it 10 months ago it required far too much information to register it compared to any other AV product. This may have changed by now, but I had a problem with it asking for some of the info it did ask for.
AV-Comparatives ratings had been low. May be better now.
Finally, though I know you don't want to hear from a Microsoft basher, but I do have a problem paying MS *more* money to protect my PC rather than having the security in the OS. Doesn't paying MS like this almost *encourage* them financially to maybe not close all the holes in the OS?

1 edit | If your running Vista Home Premium I don't see the need for Onecare. The OS already has Defender, Diskcleanup, Defragmenter, Firewall and Backup. The backup feature in VHP is better than Onecare because you can also backup files to another drive on your machine. Onecare only allows you to backup to a network drive unless this has been changed recently, then I stand corrected. I don't know about all versions of Vista but all you may need is a good paid or free antivirus and you should be well protected. | |

Your right though, I don't like to pay extra for security either, but we will always need it. As long as new programs come out, there will always be holes. Has there been an OS or program that was ever "hole free"?
If people were not out there trying to exploit holes there would not be a problem. Since there is no perfect OS or program, and we can't take people out of the equation we will always need firewalls and anti virus programs.
As far as any benefit to Microsoft to not close all the holes, there is none. I believe this is the first year they attempted to profit off a anti virus program and there are to many out there for them to profit solely. It is in there best interest not to have any flaws because they rely on us to purchase their stuff, but history has shown some people put more effort into breaking something other than making it work better.
Since there is no perfect OS, the real profit will be if a anti virus company can make a perfect program, if it were possible don't you think Microsoft would do it? Although there are security holes in their products (as does every other OS) they all spend a lot of time and money trying to keep them secure, but it is just impossible. It would be a lot cheaper for them if they didn't have to test and rewrite code and delay products because of security concerns.
Any way that is why my question was not "is it the best" but "did anyone discover things getting by it". I really don't care who anyone likes or thinks theirs is the best, I just want to know if it works as it should.
