| WRT54G & Bellsouth: Continuous Router Disconnects This is an installation that has been in service for some time without any problems whatsoever. The WRT4G is connected to a Westell modem, and set for PPPOE and stay connected. I've had numerous problems lately, with constant problems of huge lag, etc. See here: »/testhistory?view=39
Last night I worked with the help desk and they "reset my profile" ... that's a new one on me. Now since then, my WRT54G constantly disconnects from the modem. I have to keep a browser page open to the router status page, and about every three minutes, I have to manually reconnect the router. No settings have changed, but I have never seen this activity before. I swapped in another Westell modem, same behavior. Bellsouth (AT&T) says nothing they've done would cause this, but I'm at a loss.
I've seen "pppoe negotiation fail" messages from the router, but not every time. The other message is "unable to obtain PPPOE from server" or something very close to that. But now I'm not getting any messages at all, just continuous disconnects. Happened three times while typing this post.
Router firmware v1.01.0, Sep. 14, 2006
Any help appreciated. |

Also ensure it's set to bridge mode. |

| reply to KeysCapt Hey Capt, Good to see you. I've had this problem in the past.
Seems like the first time (years ago), they had to do the same 'reset profile'. Which basically means the PPPoE session gets stuck/hung. For me, it got to the point to where the modem would not stay connected, yet after leaving the modem disconnected from the phone line, during the time they did the reset profile, it worked fine afterwards. I do recall resetting both the modem and router to defaults and re-configuring while they did the reset profile.
Fast-forward to several months ago when they started putting everyone on the 'max-sync' profile. This time, the max-sync profile literally killed both my STH modems. In the course of 2 weeks, fried one right after the other. Got a Netopia 2241N, no problems since.

| Hey Frosty, long time!
Actually, after being disconnected mostly all day today, I went into the modem and changed it to "bridge" mode, as suggested above. I have my fingers crossed, but that *seems* to have worked, at least for now. I'd really love to know why all of a sudden this was necessary, but in the meantime, if it fixes this seriously frustrating problem, I'll get over it.
Thanks Flash, and Phil for your suggestion as well. |

What router version do you have? There might be a firmware upgrade for your router available that might solve your problems. I've had similar problems with PPPoE when I was running Linksys default firmware.
Something to think about. -- "If it ain't broke don't fix it." |

I'll update the FAQ, thanks.
EDIT: Corrected the wrong version. -- "If it ain't broke don't fix it." |

If it was on PPPOE, then it would cause some incompatibilities since the router is supposed to handle the PPPOE part. |

4 edits | It was in PPPOE, but the thing is, I never changed that, and it worked flawlessly for a long time.
Now I'm getting the problem again, after about 5 hours of seamless connection. The router is suddenly disconnecting, or being disconnected, and I get the "unable to obtain PPPOE from server" message when trying to reconnect.
Can't figure this out, or why it suddenly cropped up.
Edit: Just upgraded the firmware in the Linksys, thanks Lanik. .... And that didn't help, dammit.
Edit2: As I watch the status page on the Linksys, it updates every minute ... I don't know if that's normal or not, but it seems to me that what's happening is every now and then, on that update, the router just disconnects. What causes that, I have no idea, but it seems it might be a clue to what's going on here, dunno. |

LanikLab-nikPremium,ExMod 2002-03 join:2001-06-25 Bay Area 1 edit | Yes the router status page is supposed to refresh automatically. Not sure why you're being disconnected. I would think a simple browser refresh can't be causing that, but what do I know.
•In the off chance do you have another modem? If so does using another modem stabilize your connection? •I'm assuming disconnecting the router will stabilize your connection? If thats even an option. -- "If it ain't broke don't fix it." |

3 edits | Yeah, I have another modem, but there's no difference. Same behavior.
Interesting thing is, sometimes the router will immediately reconnect when I do it manually, and sometimes it takes multiple attempts. During those times, I get "PPPOE negotiation failed", followed by "Cannot get IP address from PPPOE server". If I set the modem to bridged, and the router is set to always on, why should this happen?
Oops, second question: I believe that removing the router does stabilize the connection, yes, but I haven't tested that for any real amount of time. But since it's the router that is being disconnected, I'd have to assume that's the case. I need the LAN though. Wish I had another router to try. |

The FlashYou don't win friends with saladPremium join:2002-10-17 Toronto, ON kudos:1 | reply to KeysCapt Are you sure it's not losing sync?
Perhaps give DD-WRT a try. |
|
LanikLab-nikPremium,ExMod 2002-03 join:2001-06-25 Bay Area | Be careful KeysCapt my friend tried flashing his v8 with dd-wrt and bricked it. -- "If it ain't broke don't fix it." |

KeysCaptPremium,Mod join:2001-07-11 Keys Exile kudos:1 | reply to The Flash The modem is not losing sync.
And yeah, WRT54G v7 is on the black list for DD-WRT, so it's probably safe to assume that v8 is also.
Thanks for the ideas. |

The FlashYou don't win friends with saladPremium join:2002-10-17 Toronto, ON kudos:1 | Most recent version of DD-WRT allows flashing of 7 and 8 But you have version 6? |
|
KeysCaptPremium,Mod join:2001-07-11 Keys Exile kudos:1 | I believe, according to the info that Lanik provided, my router is v8 ... and that version has limited RAM, making the DD-WRT iffy at best.
I'm experimenting with a D-Link right now, but having some trouble getting connected with it. |

| reply to KeysCapt I'm, having similar issues on a hard line DHCP connect, I thought it was a DSLAM issue; I'm not using PPpoe or wireless.
I was wondering & would appreciate input on the browser, somehow I feel like it's an IE issue, at least on my end on XP Pro sp2. I would hate to think the last multiple WGA updates was a causative factor!
For the last two days I have had problems, that mimic yours.
