1 edit | reply to Jimmy Carter ***UPDATE***
After many, many hours of research and numerous trials and errors, I managed to get a Windows XP CD created and it works flawlessly!! I accomplished this by taking some steps from Jimmy Carters post here and a few from two other sites and then combined all of them together. There may be one un-necessary step (Step 2) in the process, but it does not affect the process so I retained it. Ill let someone else figure that out because its not worth any more tinkering, to me, to find out. Also, I believe it wouldn't hurt to add a AUTORUN.INF file to the CD.
I stated by just trying to find a way to burn the project/CD without using ImgBurn because I discovered on the ImgBurn forum that the problem I was having was a known issue to the author of the application. He posted that it would be corrected in a future release. So, I tried Roxio 6 because I could not figure out how to use Ashampoo for this procedure. My first pass was met with an error after getting all the way to the copying of the Setup files: Setup cannot copy the file OEMBIOS.BIN. There was an option to proceed but it warned that Windows might not load properly so I bailed out and went back to the drawing board. I discovered at a Paul Thurrott site that I needed to copy, to the i386 folder I was planning on using, four (4) files from C:\Windows\System32. Also at that site, I found complete instructions on how to created the CD using Roxio 6.
After completing the Repair I proceeded to Windows Update but encountered a problem installing the updates after it successfully downloaded the first 91 of 102 updates. There were no error messages or any indication as to the problem. So, I tried at least 5 different fixes for this issue and finally succeeded by doing a force install of WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
Please feel free to tinker all you want with the procedure I am about to post and when you find a better or easier way be sure to post it here.

My Version of "Make your own Windows XP CD"
1. Create a temporary working folder at the root (top) of the C: drive called "XPSETUP" (without the quotes) and copy the following files into that folder:
o c:\windows\system32\oembios.bin o c:\windows\system32\oembios.dat o c:\windows\system32\oembios.sig o c:\windows\system32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}\oembios.cat
2. Download wxp10.zip from »www.nu2.nu/download.php?sFile=wxp10.zip and extract the files to a Temp folder then locate the file W2KSECT and copy or drag the file labeled w2ksect into drive C (the root)
3. Use ISOBuster to extract a file from a Windows XP CD. Run ISOBuster and make sure you have selected the node named Bootable CD. You should see a file called Microsoft Corporation.img (or similar; it will be named something.img) in the right side of ISOBuster. This is the file you need to extract. To do so, right-click and choose Extract Microsoft Corporation.img. When ISOBuster prompts you, choose to download it to the root of your C: drive.
4. Copy the entire C:\I386 folder to C:\XPSETUP.
5. Open Notepad and type the word Windows and then ONE time hit the space bar like you were going to type another word. and then hit enter to bring it down one line only. Type Windows with a capital W Save the file with the filename "WIN51" (include the quotes) in C:\XPSETUP
Do it again and this time save as win51ic into XPSETUP folder.
Do it again and this time save as win51ic.SP1 into XPSETUP folder.
Do it again and this time save as win51ic.SP2 into XPSETUP folder.
At this point, the C:\XPSETUP directory contains all the files that will be copied to your Windows Setup CDROM
6. Make a bootable XP CD with Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator 6.x as follows:
Start Creator Classic and choose File, then New Project, and then Bootable CD. This will launch the 'Choose Type of Bootable CD" dialog. Click the Advanced button and select "No Emulation" for Bootable Disc Type, 0x7c0 as the Load Segment (this is the default choice), and 4 for the Sector Count. Then, click the Browse button to locate the Microsoft Corporation.img file and use this as the bootable image. Click OK to close the dialog.
When the dialog closes, you're returned to the main Creator Classic window, which now shows two files, BOOTCAT.BIN and Microsoft Corporation.img, in the root of the CD project you're making. Rename Microsoft Corporation.img to BOOTIMG.BIN.
Now, select File and then CD Project Properties to launch the CD Project Properties dialog. There are three tabs in this dialog, and they should be configured as follows:
General Tab: The Volume Label in the first tab should match the type of the original installation. (ex. OEM_EN or WXPFPP_EN)
Select ISO9660 as the File System and only check Mode 1: CDROM
Advanced Tab: Only check Use Original File Date and Any MS-DOS 8.3 File Name
File Filter Tab: Only check All Files
7. Drag and drop all of the files from C:\XPSETUP to the CD project
8. Click the orange Record button to start burning the CD. |

Do you have a link ? Roxio doesn't offer trials of old versions. Roxio is at version 10 right now. You would have to find a CD of Roxio 6 somewhere.

Guy at Hottohaven says Can't use the C:\windows\I386 ..., has to be C:\I386 and that he doesnt think that you can even get this done with XP MCE 2005 OEM from HP. which is what I have. Pretty frustrating when you have spent a whole day reading a couple threads and trying this. I would try with Roxio but I dont have extra money for things like that and obviously since I would of probably just bought another Copy of XP. |

I don't see any mention of being able to make MCE 2005 OEM or Retail into a single Bootable CD since MCE 2005 is three (3) CDs from Microsoft, not one (1) CD like Windows XP Home or Windows XP Pro.
You should just call HP and order the correct Restore CDs as they are cheap.
Why didn't you just create the three (3) CDs from the built in burner program included with all HP PCs when prompted to do so at first boot? It may have made up to 9 CDs and that would include your drivers and everything. You do know how to go back and do that, right? Run the "HP Recovery Disc Creator utility" to create a set of recovery CD's (it is on the Programs Menu off of the Start Menu -- Look for it) and you will have what you need to reinstall everything including your DVD Player software, Recording software, Sound Card software, and all the drivers for all the other hardware inside the case. This will use up to 9 blank CD's.
Even eBay has the 3CD "BASIC SET" for HP starting at $9.99 plus $6.00 shipping as the current bid. This will not have the Hardware Drivers and it will not have the Applications for your Hardware, so you will be missing a ton of things.

| Yes Doctor, I have made the HP recovery disks via "HP Recovery Disc Creator utility". Did that awhile back and have it on 2 DVDs (DVD+R). I wanted to just try reformatting and installing XP pro... I'm sure it could be done but I don't know if I got the heart to try it now since I dont have much experience in doing so. |

| reply to Jimmy Carter Hi, I tried to make the bootable CD and when clicking the to burn option I got a dialog box asking me if c:\xpsetup was to be the root files or did I want it to be seen as a folder. I tried the first option which made c:\xpsetup the root files on the CD. when booting from it I got an error message that the computer couldn't find the NTLDR file. I then tried the 2nd option and the program told me the file depth exceeded the programs limit of 8 folders. Any suggestions?? Thank you Frank Gibbons |

| reply to Jimmy Carter I've been thinking about doing this for a computer I have had for about forever that has no reinstall disk. It's a old no name computer that I bought when a P3 800 Mhz was BAD A$*!! But since all it has is a 800 CPU and tops out with 512 ram I been thinking about makeing a "Custom" XP disk that has just the drivers I need and as barebones as possiable. And with all the updates too. Does anyone know how I could do this? Make a custom XP disk? |

Very unlikely since it isn't an OEM built PC unless you are mis-describing it. This topic shows you several times what to look for "on the hard drive" and if you don't have the folders and files needed then there is nothing to create the CD with... You will have too look and see if you have what is required. -- Whats the point of owning a supercar if you cant scare yourself stupid from time to time? |

| I slipstreamed Service Pack 3 on a bunch of CD's today and made the Windows XP CD's using this thread. |

  Mr C
| I also found out something really interesting about a Windows XP CD made from an OEM operating system using this thread. The product KEY always activates successfully no matter what hard drive you install it on and it also shows up on Belarc with the subscript {e} as factory installed product key.. weird
of course I delete the installs and dont violate the EULA. |

That worked well for me. Thank you!
This is something I've had on the back burner and been toying around with for a long time. I'll bet I've burned 15 or 20 coasters over the course of the last year or two, trying to get this right.
I probably should have just run WINNT out of the I386 folder and gotten it over with, as javaMan suggested back on the first page of this thread. But I always wanted to separate the wheat from the chaff first, so I spent a lot of time fooling around with n-Lite, trying different things, and always coming up just a little short. I always made some little mistake along the way-- just enough so I was always adding to my coaster collection.
But I gave your method a go, again using n-Lite, and it worked well! The first time I actually had a bootable disc that contained exactly what it was supposed to contain, and installed exactly how it was supposed to install. So thank you again!
Of course, I screwed something up with n-Lite again (re: pre-determined user accounts), and after futzing around trying to get that straight post-installation, the firewall I then attempted to install BSOD'ed me on reboot. So I put back an Acronis image of my prior installation, temporarily.
But I've got it now. I know the exact single mistake I made with n-Lite this time, and that'll be fixed next go-round. And I also won't make the mistake of trying to install a firewall without installing Acronis and making an image first.
Nice work on your post, joepwpb ! |

| reply to Jimmy Carter I burned 40 CD-R's yesterday and they all went in the garbage because every time I tried to install Windows XP using the CD I made it said it couldn't find inf\system32\bios error 14.
I was making this CD from the recovery DVD of a HP machine that is terrible to try and restore. I struck out over and over until ten minutes ago I got it right.
Here is how I did create my Windows XP CD using the HP recovery DVDs.
I copied the i386 folder which was 1.6 GBs into a folder on my desktop and deleted garbage until I got it to 568 MBs. Garbage is stuff like app folders that has Money, Works, Norton
.all the garbage
I also deleted Doc folder, Value Add folder and Support folder
.I think you get the idea
stuff that has nothing to do with Windows.
Ha, the KEY, THE RECOVERY TOOLS CD that comes with recovery DVDs had the complete INF folder with all the bios files. I simply copied it to the i386 folder and it replaced the one lacking all the files causing this report when I tried to install Windows
.{The inf\system32\bios error 14}
I simply copied all of the recovery tools cd to a folder on my desktop and deleted all but English
.folders..It has every country in the world almost. Than I clicked on the recovery cds i386 folder and ONLY copied the inf folder to the I386 folder.
I had already downloaded Serivce Pack 3 and made my Service Pack 3 CD so I opened Barts PE Builder v3.1.10a and slipstreamed Service Pack 3 onto the installation package before I tried to make a OEM Windows XP CD
.
It worked and Windows just installed
I had to use the Product Key off the tower while installing..Now I have the Windows XP Home Edition CD for HP Pavilion AMD +3800 and can just install Windows with out all the CRAP.
PS: Mr C is me, Jimmy Carter, the one that started this thread. |

| reply to Jimmy Carter Since I wrote that I wrote this using nLite.
Step by step..Make your own Windows XP Home or Pro CD using nLite. ________________________________________ Make your own Windows XP Home or Professional CD using nLite.
1.Go here and download and install nLite.
2.Download and install ImgBurn....found here:
2. Go here and download Service Pack 3 ISO and make a Windows Service Pack 3 CD.
3. Create a Service Pack 3 CD by right clicking on the downloaded ISO and select burn using ImgBurn as seen here:
»img291.imageshack.us/my.php?...9···3wx6.jpg
Label the new CD Service Pack 3.
4. Create a folder and put it on your desktop and label it if you have Home Edition...Label it XP Professional if you have Professional. I will use Professional in my lesson. Here is a picture of my Folder circled in RED: 5. PLEASE REMEMBER EVERYTHING WE DO FROM NOW ON IS GOING TO CHANGE WHAT IS IN THE FOLDER YOU CREATED ON YOUR DESKTOP.
»img413.imageshack.us/img413/7555···9hp7.jpg
5. Copy the i386 folder into the folder you just made labeled Windows XP {Home}{Pro}
6. Copy or make the WIN51 and WIN51IP ID files and put them in the folder with the i386 folder. You can copy these two files from any Windows XP CD or make your own.
HOW TO MAKE THE WIN51 and WIN51IP ID files
[Click on start and click on programs and click on accessories and right click on notepad and pin it to the start menu.
Open note pad and type the word Windows and then ONE time hit the space bar like you were going to type another word. and then hit enter to bring it down one line only. Type Windows with a capital W like I have it.
Now click on file and save as and type win51 and save it into the folder containing the i386 folder on your desktop.
Do it again and this time save as win51ic into the folder.
Make it win51ip if you use XP Professional]
Looks like this: »img57.imageshack.us/my.php?image···0si7.jpg

»img515.imageshack.us/img515/1995···3dh7.jpg
10. It then starts to slipstream Service Pack 3 into what ever build you put up ..Service Pack 1 or 2. Here is how it looks when it starts slipstreaming Service Pack 3 into the FOLDER
.
Here is what it looks like slipstreaming:

IT ALWAYS FINISHES BY CLOSING AND THEN YOU HAVE TO REOPEN nLite to go to the next step.
12. Take foreign languages out of the i386 folder.
13. Click on nLite and open it again and click next and next until you get to here:
»img515.imageshack.us/img515/8375/14bv8.jpg
