anon : I burned 40 CD-R's yesterday and they all went in the garbage because every time I tried to install Windows XP using the CD I made it said it couldn't find inf\system32\bios error 14.

I was making this CD from the recovery DVD of a HP machine that is terrible to try and restore. I struck out over and over until ten minutes ago I got it right.

Here is how I did create my Windows XP CD using the HP recovery DVD’s.

I copied the i386 folder which was 1.6 GB’s into a folder on my desktop and deleted garbage until I got it to 568 MB’s. I simply copied it to the i386 folder and it replaced the one lacking all the files causing this report when I tried to install Windows….{The inf\system32\bios error 14}……I simply copied all of the recovery tools cd to a folder on my desktop and deleted all but English….folders..It has every country in the world almost. Thank you! :)

This is something I've had on the back burner and been toying around with for a long time. I'll bet I've burned 15 or 20 coasters over the course of the last year or two, trying to get this right.

I probably should have just run WINNT out of the I386 folder and gotten it over with, as javaMan suggested back on the first page of this thread. But I always wanted to separate the wheat from the chaff first, so I spent a lot of time fooling around with n-Lite, trying different things, and always coming up just a little short. I always made some little mistake along the way-- just enough so I was always adding to my coaster collection.

But I gave your method a go, again using n-Lite, and it worked well! The first time I actually had a bootable disc that contained exactly what it was supposed to contain, and installed exactly how it was supposed to install.
So thank you again! :)

Of course, I screwed something up with n-Lite again (re: pre-determined user accounts), and after futzing around trying to get that straight post-installation, the firewall I then attempted to install BSOD'ed me on reboot.
So I put back an Acronis image of my prior installation, temporarily.

But I've got it now. I know the exact single mistake I made with n-Lite this time, and that'll be fixed next go-round.
And I also won't make the mistake of trying to install a firewall without installing Acronis and making an image first.

Nice work on your post, joepwpb ! :)

Doctor Olds :
said by Frsutrated :

Too many conflicting instructions and it seems that both the OP and the guy at www.howtohaven.com aren't 100% sure. I got the same problems joepwpb had with imgburn. I finally got a cd that looked like it was going (with CDBurnerXP 4-freeware) to work and then got a "Unmountable stop:0x000000ED" Error after the disk starting running. Guy at Hottohaven says Can't use the C:\windows\I386 ..., has to be C:\I386 and that he doesnt think that you can even get this done with XP MCE 2005 OEM from HP. which is what I have. Pretty frustrating when you have spent a whole day reading a couple threads and trying this. Run the "HP Recovery Disc Creator utility" to create a set of recovery CD's (it is on the Programs Menu off of the Start Menu -- Look for it) and you will have what you need to reinstall everything including your DVD Player software, Recording software, Sound Card software, and all the drivers for all the other hardware inside the case. This will use up to 9 blank CD's.

Even eBay has the 3CD "BASIC SET" for HP starting at $9.99 plus $6.00 shipping as the current bid.
joepwpb : ***UPDATE***

After many, many hours of research and numerous trials and errors, I managed to get a Windows XP CD created and it works flawlessly!! I accomplished this by taking some steps from Jimmy Carter’s post here and a few from two other sites and then combined all of them together. There may be one un-necessary step (Step 2) in the process, but it does not affect the process so I retained it. I’ll let someone else figure that out because it’s not worth any more tinkering, to me, to find out. Also, I believe it wouldn't hurt to add a AUTORUN.INF file to the CD.

I stated by just trying to find a way to burn the project/CD without using ImgBurn because I discovered on the ImgBurn forum that the problem I was having was a known issue to the author of the application. He posted that it would be corrected in a future release. So, I tried Roxio 6 because I could not figure out how to use Ashampoo for this procedure. My first pass was met with an error after getting all the way to the copying of the Setup files: “Setup cannot copy the file OEMBIOS.BIN”. There was an option to proceed but it warned that Windows might not load properly so I bailed out and went back to the drawing board. I discovered at a Paul Thurrott site that I needed to copy, to the i386 folder I was planning on using, four (4) files from C:\Windows\System32. Also at that site, I found complete instructions on how to created the CD using Roxio 6.

After completing the “Repair” I proceeded to Windows Update but encountered a problem installing the updates after it successfully downloaded the first 91 of 102 updates. There were no error messages or any indication as to the problem. So, I tried at least 5 different “fixes” for this issue and finally succeeded by doing a force install of “WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe”

Please feel free to tinker all you want with the procedure I am about to post and when you find a better or easier way be sure to post it here.

Joe P

My Version of "Make your own Windows XP CD"

1. Use ISOBuster to extract a file from a Windows XP CD. Run ISOBuster and make sure you have selected the node named Bootable CD. You should see a file called Microsoft Corporation.img (or similar; it will be named something.img) in the right side of ISOBuster. This is the file you need to extract. To do so, right-click and choose Extract Microsoft Corporation.img. When ISOBuster prompts you, choose to download it to the root of your C: drive.

4. Copy the entire C:\I386 folder to C:\XPSETUP.

5. Open Notepad and type the word Windows and then ONE time hit the space bar like you were going to type another word. and then hit enter to bring it down one line only. Click the Advanced button and select "No Emulation" for Bootable Disc Type, 0x7c0 as the Load Segment (this is the default choice), and 4 for the Sector Count. Then, click the Browse button to locate the Microsoft Corporation.img file and use this as the bootable image. Click OK to close the dialog.

When the dialog closes, you're returned to the main Creator Classic window, which now shows two files, BOOTCAT.BIN and Microsoft Corporation.img, in the root of the CD project you're making. Rename Microsoft Corporation.img to BOOTIMG.BIN.

Now, select File and then CD Project Properties to launch the CD Project Properties dialog. Don't run the Restore steps after that, but see if it will just boot the PC. If it does boot from the number one Restore CD, just reset the PC after taking the CD out. That means you need to recheck the steps and procedures you used to make the other Bootable CD as you missed something. Now if the PC doesn't boot using the number one Restore CD look for other issues like a dirty CD lens or a bad CD Drive. If you have more than one CD or DVD drive, try both to see if it will boot from CD.
--
What’s the point of owning a supercar if you can’t scare yourself stupid from time to time?

What "adjustments" would need to be done if the os is XP media center 2005? Or can I just create for XP pro?

MCE 2K5 typically comes in either a two or three disc set. The two disc set consists of one OS install disc (not too dissimilar from XP Pro) and one MCE disc (disc 2) that is used when prompted. The three disc set is the same with the addition of an update disc (.net framework and some other stuff). There is also an OEM branded DVD version with everything on one disc.

Disc1 is basically “i386” typical install files and disc 2 is basically “CMPNENTS\MEDIACTR\I386” MCE files. If you omit disc 2 during install the end result is an XP Pro install.

Therefore for a MCE OEM PC one would want to backup “C:\CMPNENTS\MEDIACTR\I386” if present as disc2 and maybe .net framework updates that you can download. Tablet PC files have a similar path,…something like: C:\CMPNENTS\TABLET\I386,…..but I would have to check on that one,….

Users may also want to try using the following method to save themselves the hassle of activation:

Preserving OEM Pre-Activation when Re-installing Windows XP

Since we are talking about OEM Microsoft OSes there will likely be only one online activation allowable before a call to Microsoft becomes compulsory for each subsequent activation. Preserving OEM Pre-Activation would in that light save even more effort and frustration,….from a certain point of view.

I’m fairly certain I can just modify my recovery set by making another set that omits the ad-ware trial-ware and unwanted-ware since the location on the disc set is known. However, I have already made an OS install CD, driver install CD and application install CD.
