I donated a 1993 Grand Am to charity cars a few years ago.

They sent a Local auction Co. over to pick up my car. The car went to auction and sold for $35. I thought I was doing the right thing but was very disappointed in the way the whole thing worked. When I was doing my tax's I added $500 as a test to see if it would do anything for me. It didn't mean anything as far as a tax wright off. It isn't worth it with a car that old. I would sell it, give it away or junk it before I do that again!

EDIT: The car was in good condition had 65,000 miles on it and only needed tires and brakes. So maybe they took the lousy $35 and someone who picked up the car at auction sold it and made a few dollars! I was not looking for a tax break and the idea of someone needy getting the car sounded appealing to me. I was very disappointed in the end.

A few years ago, donating a car yielded great tax return benefits. Everyone was doing it and it was the "in" thing to do. The Feds quickly caught on and closed out all the loop holes that made donating a car worthwhile as a tax advantage.

If your father wants to do it out of the goodness of his heart, he can probably stop at H&R block and ask them for the paprwork/handouts on doing or contact a tax accountant. Or, if it runs....Print out an ad and go post it at the local college.

I recently donated a vehicle to the American Foundation for the Blind through Cars4Charities. I've been a long time supporter of AFB and have also volunteered for them. I can honestly say that it is a fine and upstanding organization.

I called up the 800# that was given to me and someone came to my house two days later to pick up the vehicle. They then sent me paperwork in the mail. (It was interesting, though. They valued the vehicle at the maximum the blue book allowed. They even quoted more options than were actually in the vehicle.)

Well actually I'm not sure if my father wants to donate it or does he knows what are the uses if he donate it. But I'm guessing is mostly for the tax interest.

I suggest the Heritage for the Blind because they sent me a Official Tax Receipt (although these two organisations might be one and the same :notice the common toll free number).

A tow truck came after a few days, picked up the car gave me a receipt and after a while I received a letter from them regarding the tax write off.

I got the full wholesale value on all cars as an tax-deduct in all those years.
