Comes down to price

Can it be competitive with wired broadband?

Right now Clearwire is signigicantly more expensive here than DSL or cable (at the same speed).

If WiMax is priced like Clearwire or cellular broadband you won't see much adoption at all.

WiMAX should eventually come down in price but it is worth paying more for mobility. I have replaced my cable modem for EVDO. Even though EVDO is slower, more expensive and has less consistent performance than landline, I'd rather have the mobility than being force into one location. And I never have to look for a WiFi hotspot in the entire metro. EVDO/1xRTT works anywhere there is a cellphone signal.

Same is true for cellphones vs. landline phones. Landline phones are more reliable and cost less than cellphones, but most of us want the mobility and are willing to dump landline, even though it's more reliable, performs better and costs less than cellphones.

If many are dumping cable/dsl for EVDO, many more will dump landline for WiMAX, except those who really need more than 4Mbps.
