| [OOL] Do everyone have 2 jump through hoops 2 get their full spe
Just wondering.. I got OOL+Boost
Since I just get the modem installed by the guy, I did the following:
- call up OOL to have them get me to boost speed - call them up to open up port 80 and I think 25 - research and ask question here. - tweak my Rwin - get new router (I won't count that since they got it working from my pc to modem) - tweak "default send window" - did countless speedtest to verify that I can get my full speed.
now I'm pretty much an expert computer user. but I didn't install or even put the CD that they include with the modem.
anyone here actually installed that what ever it is in the OOL cd that came with the modem? do that actually optimized your PC for the high speed? so to avoid doing what I listed above?
if not. then I can't see how some casual PC user can ever get their money's worth. heck I"m sure a good portion of their customer are getting jerked like and not knowledgable to realize about the speed test and or tweakings. |

| I'm getting full speed now. after the tweaks.
Too lazy to dig through my attic and pull out the modem box/cd and look myself.
but what is in that installation CD that OOL gives you?
ohh: I'm getting around 28-29mbps download and 4.3-4.5mbps upload
using speakeasy.net and speedtest.net
I'm not complaining about my speed persay. just that the stuff that I have to go through to get that speed and the fact that most people will never know about the tweaks |

1 edit | said by dbmaven :The CD does no tweaking at all. That's what I thought. I've never used it. Always get great speeds (regular OOL and now Boost) with no tweaking. I've changed my receive window just for funsies and noticed no difference. -- JIHAD WATCH~~9582 DEADLY TERROR ATTACKS SINCE 9/11~~TEAM DISCOVERY |

1 edit | reply to geniv I didn't. Regular OOL - just plugged it in and it worked at full speed. I have been through several modem upgrades over the years, and same thing - just plug it in, register, and full speeds.
Never used their CD. -- NOTHING justifies terrorism. We don't negotiate with terrorists. Those that support terrorists are terrorists. |

I had some issues with getting OOL to open port 80. Otherwise not a big deal. I run Linux so there is no tweaking needed. The CD is a useless waste of petrochemicals.
I don't understand why port 25 is useful. If you try to run your own mail server you get blocked by most major ISPs because you are on a dynamic netblock. |

Some people like the net guide, especially people who have never even used the web before. Other people like the OOL icon. Mostly people who have little real computer knowledge. |

The Port25 Unblock not only unblocks INCOMING Port25 Sessions (so you can run your own Mail Server to receive Email) but also OUTGOING Port 25 Sessions (so your SMTP Server can Send Email). More importantly, the OUTGOING Port 25 unblocking allows you to connect via Port 25 to Foreign (ie: Non-OOL) MSA Servers so that your Non-OOL Email Accounts can inject/send their Email via an SMTP MSA Server run by the ISP that hosts the Email Address. There are still some Luddite ISP (such as Verizon) that do not support a non-Port25 Connection (such as the RFC Designated Mail Submission Agent [MSA] Port 587) for Email Submission if you want to use their MSA server. Unblocking OUTGOING Port25 thus allows the use of these Port25-Only MSA Servers. |
