Most of it was just careful timing on my part. I did my best to watch the game, but I made sure to time my days around the 24 and 6-hour marks so that I could capitalize on my opportunities.

I'll beg your pardon if I don't participate so heavily in post-game. I'm a tad hungover at the moment.

AmeritecTech : I had taken a break from mafia for a while. I consulted with Yock and asked him what he thought of a game where the killer was not listed as an official player, but with some sort of mechanism to root him out. He liked the idea, but didn't know how I could give the name without giving it.

I had the spark of an idea for using anagrams on September 19th. On that day I started researching how easy it would be to do on the mentioned anagram link. Initial testing indicated that it was probably workable. I hadn't planned on a full message of anagram names, but it started to seem possible. I then posted in the metathread that I was planning.

I needed a serial killer who was a prominent player in the community. Yock was my natural choice, especially since I had already run the idea by him (so him playing as a normal player was out). He accepted, but I never told him about the anagrams. He couldn't figure out how Sarah had ferreted out "The Innkeeper" even though he had access to essentially the same information.

One thing about this game is that the work was mostly front-loaded. Crunching out the anagrams was the toughest part. After that it was pretty breezy. There wasn't a lot to manage. I didn't even use a spreadsheet this time. Administration was a cinch. No mafia team also made things flow more quickly. No true night phase meant no down-time. I'm confident you guys could have figured it out if you had just slowed down for a while, but you guys went on a killing spree there for a while, and with Yock's kills added in, it didn't take long to wipe everyone but Lurlyn out.

To answer your question, feasability research on the 19th, hard planning started during down-time at work on the 20th and continued during the signup thread until the game started 6 days later.

Rook008 : Good game AmeritecTech, but too many secrets :)

I was wondering why the player list was numbered and in a different order from when we signed up, but in my notes on the game I listed them in a different order, dropped the numbers, and didn't realise that each name was only a part of the message. I was using the scrabble tiles to decode each name individually :(.
We really needed to think outside the box on this one.

Sneakers was a really cool movie.

I fear something wicked may befall your township. You see, we've just experienced several deaths which we could not explain. Our detective had been suspicious of a citizen, but didn't have enough evidence to lock him away. Then our detective ended up dead and the citizen vanished. Upon searching his home, we found several travel scrolls for Margana that sung the praises of your town. It seems that he was planning to go there next. The man's name was Peter Henkine. Please be on the lookout for him, and you might tell others to watch for him as well. He was a creepy sort. Let me know how things turn out.

He removed that first paragraph when he re-posted it, I guess in an attempt to disguise that he was the doctor. I intended for muzscman to have a quandary about whether or not to post it, as initial flavor indicated that the doctor was the only one to receive a letter, but he fired away. Yock didn't seem to notice anyway, which certainly benefited the town when he went after Lurlyn, who was protected by muz. This letter was designed to be my second attempt (first, Margana backwards is Anagram) to clue you guys in to the anagrams. Thomas Billon was appointed Royal Anagamatist to to Louis XIII, which is the most prominent thing mentioned about him on most Google results. Setec Astronomy is the most popular pop-culture reference that I could think of to anagrams. Its an anagram for Too Many Secrets (which was also the name of Day Two) from the movie Sneakers, which had a cast of big names. Good flick.

The first picture's "Subject" in properties was "18 15 20 M 7 15 15 7 12 5 9 20". To decode, A = 1, B = 2 etc., very simple, so it translates to ROT 13 GOOGLEIT. »rot13.com Rot 13 was the method used to encode the message in comments. That message stated that the doctor had the name of the killer, a probe I was using in case he didn't post the letter to increase his quandary. Subsequent image codes were typically done in ROT13 but without any explanation of such, as it could be gleaned from the first picture.

Designing anagrams can be difficult. You've got to try a bunch of different starting phrases before you come up with a half-way believable name. This was my tool: »wordsmith.org/anagram/advanced.html

After pulling down some sample anagrams for a phrase, I would look through them for one that had some sort of name in it. I would then designate that name as a mandatory component and come up with a decent workable last name. Some letters are extremely hard to use in anagrams. J, for example. Also, you often run into the problem of too many vowels. No decent anagram could be found for Start Message, Begin Message, or others, so Aegis Emitenitas for Initiate Message was a best effort surrender. I made him a sentry for added credibility (Aegis was the shield of Zeus). The whole message went through an extensive evolution as I honed the anagrams.

Omega Fesdens was one of my better accomplishments, I think, a triple entendre. Omega is the last Greek character, he's the last one on the manifest, and he translates to End Of Message. I thought that was going to work as a cluestick if it got translated, but it didn't.

Yock having two names was, I felt, necessary to give a fighting chance. If you guys had caught on to the anagrams early, you might have gone directly to solving his, so I added an extra layer to make it harder.

When you guys were failing to dig deep enough, I went back to the pictures. I started posting picture after picture of hints. The river of blood's hidden message said that the killer 'wants blood' to make such a river. The sun standing still image was my attempt to again warn you of the dangers of not ending the day. To keep you guys working on the puzzles, I decided some motivation was needed to compel you. Its too easy to just let things stagnate if time is unlimited, I feared, especially in a game like this. If you guys discovered eternal life (not voting), that would be unacceptable, so I gave Yock a way to keep the blood flowing. He was 11-1, so I don't consider 3 kills in a day to be unfair, especially since you guys didn't heed the 24 hour warning after reminders from Dezbend.

Yock was not aware of the anagrams until later in the game. Dezbend actually solved it before Yock even did.

Ameritectech designed the game for 9 but 2 of us joined late and he let us in (thank you).

We noticed the funny order of the names day 1.
Rook noticed the anagram hint day 1.
If we had only put it all together a little sooner I am sure we could have cracked it.

Even without cracking the list... Peter pointed to Tony.

I solved Tony's anagram last night, but thought it was just coincidence "yock wants blood" or whatever it said. I wish I would have thrown it out there when I saw it.

Anyway all in all a very enjoyable game.

Attempt on my life is made. FAILED (the only one that failed)

We lynched cow (and boy was he good with fries!)

Day 2:
Sarah gets it.
We lynched Rookie. :(

Day 3:
No kills... humm...
We lynched Navy.

Day 4:
Robert gets the ax.
We lynched Dez.

Day 5 begins:

Tech lists the manifest 4 times. Odd.
Gomez gets whacked.

Leaving little 'ol me. To pull out all of my hair.

All signs point to Peter Henkine (the innkeeper) possibly AKA Tony Blackwoods. But yet, we cannot vote a player by his/her character name.

I am either reading WAY TOO much into this or Tech is a pure genius. Either way... he's still a bastard.

It was Peter Henkine who is our very own *lollerface. He was the one killing us off. First Muz got a letter and then Robert received a message about the letters P and H carved on the neck. So we know the killer is in our town.

It was me, unknowingly. But then I would have already won seeing as I survived and all.

It was aliens left over from Maxo's pod people game. Or He-who-shall-not-be-named.

Shit guys... my head hurts. Back through ONE...MORE....TIME!

Returning to the courtyard, he quickly apprehended Martin Shagan and placed him in the prison. When mid-day approached, the prisoner was returned, shackled, to the courtyard.

The town crier took position on the parapet and sounded his trumpet.

"Hear ye, hear ye, an official announcement:
For attempting to start a bandwagon to lynch Todd Hartsbeam, the honorable mayor of Margana, Martin Shagan has been sentenced to death. Any further attempts on the honorable mayor's life will be dealt with by Moll Kid. The sentence will now be carried out."

Moll Kid made a quick cut across Martin Shagan's stomach causing his guts to fall to the floor. As Martin Shagan screamed in horror looking down at his eviscerated guts, Moll Kid took his second swing, taking Martin Shagan's head clean off.

Martin Shagan (Robert), town detective, has been killed!

Dezbend : IMO, everyone is playing like town, and I can not get a read on the bad guy (I think there is only one, and acting independently he is able to blend in much easier).

Do we have any investigative leads to eliminate suspects?

Lurlyn and bigreds have collaborated to clear each other (although I hold out a small measure of doubt thinking they could both be bad).

Identifying Tony Blackwoods seems key right now.

I am fairly convinced it is tho friend... tho like thou as in thee or thou or thine - but missing a letter. I didn't see it earlier as "tho" is spelled wrong. Hot was a joke ;)

I am especially sure once I broke Peter's name, and from one of the death scenes it is clear that this is on the right track. We need to identify the innkeeper and we have found our man.

Dezbend : I went back to the names to see if any of the other characters (besides the legendary Grimthane Margana) gave us a clue, but came up with nothing. I looked through the opening sequence and didn’t notice any half finished anagrams that would help us out. I reversed all the pictures, but they still looked like pictures to me… where is the anagram we have to solve? (rhetorical question for now)

Dezbend : I think this game is a puzzle with a win scenario that is different from a regular game... I just get that feel. I am not convinced that no lynch is the winning strategy, but I think this is a puzzle not a game of mafia.

btw I deny being the primary source of information. I am not an important role.

Looking back Muz challenged my claim of protection on lyn. That might be the case, but I've never heard of a Doc having a 50/50 chance, where as having armor would produce that. I would think the armor would take precedence over the doc any.. perhaps if the armor failed the doc would get the save.. unsure.. but for now, that puts lyn in my town camp.

Dez:
He seems to be our primary information conduit. It would be pretty messed up to have that be an anti-town role, but I'm not ruling that out. He has an edge.

(While posting, I see Dez wants a no lynch.)

Rook:
Highly suspicious. but cautious due to metagaming.

Bigred:
In most cases, excluding Dethy games, a no-lynch is almost always a bad idea.. metagaming from other sites, it's almost always a bad tactic, unless there is strong statistical advantage to it. I've yet to see a advantage gained from a kill here, and the odds are clearly not in our favor. A nolynch likely worsens the odds, with no gain. Suspect.

Navy:
Not telling me much of anything, yet. Need to reread on that.

I don't think there is a day and night cycle in this game at all. I think the killer is allowed a kill every 24 timer hours, and the hit on lylurn was an attempted recruitment that didn't work because of her thingy with reds.

1 man with only timed kill, would own this game quickly with the current status quo as proof.

Did the Bmod really random the players? or did he pick certain players for specific spots? (unknown as of yet)

what was there to gain from sarah's death? I understand the dr's death, but not sure where sarah fit in. we still have the cop, which we have heard nothing from at all.

Sarah : 8 roles, plus I know there is a killer, so 9. Of course I'm not 100% sure about everything and some of them are vague (e.g., I don't know what specific names the masons have).

The ones which are total question marks to me are Robert, cow, and Dezbend (although I believe Dez hinted at something it was not specific enough to peg a role onto). I think one of those three is the killer. Of course it is possible/probable I'm wrong about some of the people I "pegged."

If it were her own role she were referring to, she would not have worded it that way ("my guess is..." "the person must have had...").

Dezbend : I am seriously considering vote gomez, but am going to hold onto my robert vote for now. it is clear there are bad guys that are killing, so a no lynch doesn't make sense. at the very beginning there was some doubt as to whether a killer was on the lose. we are sure there is a killer now.

This is getting a bit silly. It is day 1, we will most likely not have terribly strong evidence, but we do have to act one way or another. Nearly half the town isn't voting and a lot of people haven't posted in 12 hours or more.

My Role PM has me pegged as a hardy person, so I would not want to start saying that others are Power Roles like that in the thread. It kind of sets them up as targets.

And the Cow timing seems too convenient. Saying that Cow's appearance and or vote somehow links to the attempt on Lyn's life is odd to me.

We can lynch what probably be pro-town and lose another one tomorrow, or we can just lose another townie tomorrow.

My greatest suspicion at this point is at Cow, but unless the mod is a total bastard and would put in the kill the second it was submitted, cow would be really going out on a limp as the killer. Too obvious.

Since we are nowhere anything what do you guys think about the no-lynch, it is one of the first things 'tech posts.

The second time my character came up was when rook asked if anyones characters specifically interact with other's on the PM. I chimed in as mine did. I am not roleclaiming and am being rather careful.

First... can anyone tell me what this Margana is... seems like people know these characters... or what the story is all about I am honestly more lost than I was when I was playing the Harry Potter game.

I know No Lynch looks bad, but I think the 1 out of 11 chances of being right (if we assume our initial thought was correct... maybe a day kill and a night recruit?) that 1 out of 11 chance stinks.

1) Cows first vote of the day is ends up as an assasination.

2) As been stated, possbly, recruiting gone bad?

Don't know how bastardly he can get.

What I do know is that it seemed to be a decent day out, until cow showed up that is.

The page I have loaded at around 16:35 includes everything upto Gomez's post so I don't know about his status, but he jumped on it almost instantly after the report. The following people show 'Online: now!' around the time of report: navyvet, cow, chlen, lurlyn, sarah, Bastard Mod. My top suspect is Rook008 since at 16:35, he was last seen 4m, so 16:31, and someone tried to kill Lurlyn around 16:28/

when I was talking no lynch, I was really just throwing out ideas 1. cause this is just an odd set up and it is exciting and fun to figure out what the twists may be 2. to see who supports what. I will point out that I did not vote no lynch - it is just too much of a gamble. I don't know anything for sure and a lynch is the safest bet so far today.

Usually I don't either...but unless someone else received mail about another person of interest, I'm going to assume as of right now that we have 1 mafia. And a 1 in 11 chance to lynch someone is horrible odds...

Yeah I am home sick so I got plenty of time to play, I just dont have anything to say.

I believe that there are some bad guys who are not mentioned in the text who exist in the game, I also think more will develop as those coming home from work.

Based on my own PM I can say that some players are in the flavor text. Other then that I got nothing.

Maybe a no lynch is going to be our best if we do not get more developments.

I am sure that part of my list is wrong...maybe all of it. It's all speculation on my part..I have nothing positive to go on other than I got a mail message about Peter Henkine...at the moment he's the only one I am suspicious of....

Per the Mod I can quote the PM so here it is:

"I fear something wicked may befall your township. You see, weâ€™ve just experienced several deaths which we could not explain. Our detective had been suspicious of a citizen, but didnâ€™t have enough evidence to lock him away. Then our detective ended up dead and the citizen vanished. Upon searching his home, we found several travel scrolls for Margana that sung the praises of your town. It seems that he was planning to go there next. The manâ€™s name was Peter Henkine. Please be on the lookout for him, and you might tell others to watch for him as well. He was a creepy sort. Let me know how things turn out.

Dezbend : just thinking outside the box here, but maybe when we lynch a pro-town figure Peter can recruit... punishing the town for lynching wrong.

I am worried about the bad things that might happen if we don't reach consensus, but we still have quite a few hours, we don't need to start throwing votes around yet.

With ye small game such as this'n, this lass would not be surprised if'n ye bastard mod did something such as dezbend suggests instead of starting with several baddies. Ye question is... is the town's strategy better to lay low or to start point'n ye fingers right away? Yarr. I am no fan of ye 'no lynch' in general but sometimes I suppose it is good sense.

Me wonders if we shall see calamity fall upon us today... with ye ominous "nothing could possibly go wrong on a day like today"...

There are many more then 11 names mentioned in the opening, about 20 by a glance count.

Since all of us are obviously not correlated to the names in the opening scene, then there could just as well be some of us who are not in the scene.

I was thinking the same thing. We have a lone person (Peter Henkine) who we know left the last town and was a person of suspicion. In his house they found a note mentioning our little castle of Maragana....

Its another pleasant day in Margana, the small township named after the country's greatest hero, Grimthane Margana, former Arch-Captain of the Royal Army.

Pontius Sabre, a swordsman, Aegis Emitenitas, a sentry, and Omega Fesdens, an archer, practice their hand-to-hand techniques outside the armory while Rhea Stile, their captain, advises. A steady clang can be heard from the blacksmith shop of Piers Marigon as he pounds out some weapon or another.

Fender Fithontow, the minstrel, lays on his back in a pasture with a sitar, practicing a tune. Ed Thorfin, a cartographer, looks out his window occasionally as he reviews the naval maps he’s re-drawing. In the neighboring apartment, author Pasha Howdley is trying to get over a vicious case of writer’s block. Greta Sonduno milks her cows so she can take the milk to sell in Ally Dovelay's general store. Just waking up in his bed, detective Martin Shagan wondered what sort of menial issues he’d be tasked with today. Would he have to round up the geese again?

In the tavern, Earl Inklot is serving a couple pints to Maser Hellswolf, the aging war veteran, and Dan Jutrusk, who could only be described as the town drunk. Tony Blackwoods beats the rugs from his inn against the walls while Sally Nepastas is baking up another batch in her bakery. Gene Grist tends to his flock of sheep. Ares Jetsjut, the town jester, spends his time dancing around the keep entertaining all who pass.

Todd Hartsbeam, the mayor, looks down on the prosperous town from his keep on the hill while crossbow specialist Lorie Blesdon mans the keep’s watchtower. Yes, things were going well today. He could see mail courier Ikona Stiller delivering today's only letter to Dale Priestly, the town’s doctor and a hobbyist astronomer. Even the odd hermit on the edge of town, Thane Tarot, was out enjoying the sun.

Yes, today was a good day. Nothing could possibly go wrong on a day like today.
