 | New speeds for internet coming! I sent off my usual email I do every few months to mountaincable requesting that they add a faster internet service package, this time mentioning things like xbox live marketplace's HD movie rental downloads that are going to be starting next month. This is the response I recieved:
"We are currently testing this service on our system as well as increased speeds for our service.
We expect to be able to deliver these services by mid December."
I hope it's something good. Hopefully they will increase their upload speeds along with it, maybe something along the lines of a 10mbps/1mbps service like most other cable companies? |

With the price increase by $1 , I assumed things were now in motion. (AFAIK the price was increased a few weeks ago). -- Success is measured by effort. Discover Hamilton, and its Entertainment. |

|
 | reply to Quantum_Flux I've been with mountain for years (back even when they were "Wave"... about 1998), speeds have never changed, they've added a couple 10000 series Cisco routers to their network to increase the amount of connections they can handle (note: they are about a decade old already... ancient compared to today's technologies) and not too much else other than software updates/upgrades. They've (meaning the many different hapless techno-weenies) told me over the years they were keeping the speeds at 5mb to keep the service consistent for all users. Loads of crap! The only reason for this 'explanation' would be because of the lack of investing towards new equipment. The infrastructure is already there, since they use existing fibre optic lines that were installed in the mid & late 90's by the city for their network upgrading needs. Its a sad thing to see other ISP's increase their speeds regularly every 3 to 4 years to continue to be competitive, while mountain cable (with its huge expenditures on increasing the levels of digital television capabilities) continues to fall behind in the ISP market. The only reason 80% of their customers are with Mountain Cable is because DSL in Hamilton has never been great and that the only cable service in these customer's areas is mountain cable.
I go to my gf's house and use her computer sometimes to download larger things (1 to 9GB!) ... she's with Cogeco. Ive recorded her top speed (through a Linksys router on top of that) of 1.2mbps (1.04mbps steady) in an actual download using a large file (winxp sp2 redistributable from microsoft.com/downloads .. about 238mb) which in my own home directly from main cable line to modem to my computer averages 430kbps at low network traffic times of 4AM to 7AM (peaks at 760kbps then drops steadily all the way down to about 280kbps - SEEMS TO SUPPORT THAT THROTTLING THEORY MENTIONED EARLIER!!)
My cost for the service has increased incrementally every year or two too... from 38.50 when I first got the service known as "Wave" to $40.39 (changed to eXpress), $41.79, 42.45, to the current $44.95!!!!!!!!!
Why are costs being increased when service is unchanged? (Inflation cant be used as an excuse!)
... Im not negative or positive (though is seems all pretty negative). I just want to point out that if they're going to charge us more for our regular service, while implementing higher speeds for what... increased costs again... it'll just make us want to switch to someone else.
So in light of the supposed updates to their services, those implementations should be replacement of the 5mb/s full eXpress service, not a new eXpress version costing upwards of what... possibly $75-$100?
Its time for the company to give us what we really pay for! And thats better services with the new technologies.
Damn profiteering Gluttons! |

 | reply to Quantum_Flux Thank god... I was beginning to get annoyed with the lack of upgrades when everyone around me is getting much better speeds. Many of people I know that have the speeds don't even know how to use a computer very well but people like me who take advantage of everything you can do on a computer it makes a large difference.
Anyway I hope the upload is raised to 1mbit or higher, seen as how torrents and gaming are very popular and your download is generally limited if you have a slow upload. |

twizlarI dont think so.Premium join:2003-12-24 Brantford, ON kudos:3 | Why would you use torrents if you have Mountain Cable? They include access to usenetserver.com -- AMD Athlon64 4000+ @ 2723mhz - mountaincable.net wireless Intarweb | Ipods SUCK |

 | reply to Quantum_Flux That's good to here that there is something in the works. I've been with Mountain for about 18 months now and am very satisfied with the service so far. I was with Cogeco before that for years. Way back to the "Wave" days but moving 6 minutes away from Cogeco's area forced me change. I hope we get a speed increase to at least 7mbps. The current 5mbps is so 90's |

MikeGPremium join:2004-10-02 Hamilton, ON | reply to Quantum_Flux Looks like the new speed is 6/512? |
|
 | I hope 6/512 isn't the new speeds. It's so marginal an increase, southmount has had this speed for a while now and we're just finally catching up?
Hopefully this is just the new standard Xpress service and they will give us some kind of 10/1 connection in december there. |
|
 | reply to MikeG How do you know its 6/512? |

No increase here. What gives? |

MikeGPremium join:2004-10-02 Hamilton, ON | Probably still getting everyone the new config. They could still be testing it as well. Who knows, maybe they will give us 7mbps :P |

...mind you, I'm on the business package. -- Oh, bother, said Pooh, as the unclean emanations of the Old Ones manifested as squamous and rugose tentacles that were of no earthly color. |

 | That test server from mountaincable gives you a false readout. I get the same connection speed when I test through there, give one of the tests here a try to see your actual internet speed. |
|
MikeGPremium join:2004-10-02 Hamilton, ON | Its not a false readout, its just uncapped. Same with email, mountains ftp, etc. |
|
 | Well yeah I understand that, but unless you do all your internet through mountaincable's server, those stats are pointless. To me its like comparing the transfer rate of your network card over a LAN over what you do online. 10/2 is most definately not what mountaincable offers for actual speed. Unless you buy the business package of 10/1 with unlimited bandwidth at 599.99/mo. And really, only actual businesses would do that. |
