Re: New speeds for internet coming! said by MikeG:Its not a false readout, its just uncapped. Same with email, mountains ftp, etc. Should the mountain news server be uncapped too? I seem to still only be able to pull 700kb/s-ish from it. |

MikeGPremium join:2004-10-02 Hamilton, ON 2 edits | The news server is not run by them like Cogeco's(inhouse). Mountain's is run by usenetserver.com 6concurrent connections, no caps, speed is not capped(you're getting around max)and i believe around 40days retention.
Just don't tell everyone about it. If too many people start using it.. lol |

I know that, but since it is one of their services is it "counted" as in network traffic? ;) As I said before downloading a blu-ray disc....aka 26GB...of which in a day and a half have actually gotten 20GB of...don't want them to get mad at me... |
|
Net @mountaincable.net | Are you crazy?
They're going to cut the service off altogether if you abuse the network like that. Stop it! |
|
 | their not going to cut you off for downloading 26gb. I've done more than that just grabbing demos and shit off usenet, once, I downloaded an entire boxset of 50gb in one batch. Not so much as a peep from mountaincable. I try not to do it too often though. If you're starting to pull like 400gb of data a month your going to stick out like a sore thumb.
But out of interest, why bother downloading a blu-ray? Just get an HDrip. 9gb is much more manageable. |

Looks like it's officially 6Mbps. Just got this in the mail last week. But I still can't even get over 5Mbps...

I think they may be reselling - Fibrewired fibre (don't know for sure - guess I could ask - not that I need/can justify/can afford more than the office express at the moment)
Either way - add in the IP addresses "as required" and it's suddenly much more interesting for a real business.
Ticats offices have 10Mbit symmetrical fibre and connectivity between them and it truly does make a difference compared to cable/dsl... -- "Yahoo Doré" is Who-speak for "Where the hell is my stuff?" - Howard Tayler - »www.schlockmercenary.com/ |

 | reply to Quantum_Flux I am a Cogeco user, Cogeco is great. I was thinking to move to mountain and found out that I can only have mountain cable in that area. So my research about mountain cable brought me to this forum. I am reading these horrible comments about mountain cable. I cannot understand why people are paying for a service and not asking for quality service. Why there is no competition for service providers. That will improve the quality of service. All three companies should have the ability to serve any client in any area like most of world (even the so call THIRD WORLD countries have better internet service). The way things are here in Canada some time make me think that Canadians are probably still living in stonage or do they have no senses to make a informed and intelligent decision in their life? Every body from top to bottom in Government departments is corrupt. People don't have the courage to stood up and ask for their genuine rights. Is it democracy or dictatorship or are they still living in 18th century ruled by the kings & queens and extorted by those rulers. |

Iduno, I've referred about 5 or 6 people to mountain and they've had no complaints.
DSL on the mountain is not very good, some places have good 4.2mbps, or some places (like me) have 1mpbs service. As of now, with Bell's spotty coverage, 30gb monthly caps, and BT throttling, Mtncbl is the better deal.
I'd say try DSL service first to see how your speed is. If its shit, try Mountain Cable. |

 | reply to Canada Stoneage Canada gets screwed over in many ways. The current canadian dollar is a nice example. Company's like microsoft still charge us as if our dollar was worth 60 cents US. And they will continue to charge this for as long as canadians remain misinformed about what their paying for.
On the topic of Mountaincable tho, while they do have a pretty bad speed these days compares to most other cable companies, at least their unlimited, provide awesome newsgroup access, and the service is generally reliable. In the beginning of their service I was getting frequent modem outages but these days I get one maybe once every 6 months.
The problem with their speeds is they don't have to compete with anything directly aside from Bell Sympatico. And even Bell is offering better speeds now than Mountain, but they have some pretty bad p2p throttling going on. Have fun trying to download anything from bittorrent.
I'm pretty saddened that an almost worthless extra megabit per second was their new speeds they had in store. But I guess theres nothing I can do about it until a truely better ISP is available. Til then I'm stuck with Mountaincable and they know it. |

I've been with mountain for years (back even when they were "Wave"... about 1998), speeds have never changed, they've added a couple 10000 series Cisco routers to their network to increase the amount of connections they can handle (note: they are about a decade old already... ancient compared to today's technologies) and not too much else other than software updates/upgrades. They've (meaning the many different hapless techno-weenies) told me over the years they were keeping the speeds at 5mb to keep the service consistent for all users. Loads of crap! The only reason for this 'explanation' would be because of the lack of investing towards new equipment. The infrastructure is already there, since they use existing fibre optic lines that were installed in the mid & late 90's by the city for their network upgrading needs. Its a sad thing to see other ISP's increase their speeds regularly every 3 to 4 years to continue to be competitive, while mountain cable (with its huge expenditures on increasing the levels of digital television capabilities) continues to fall behind in the ISP market. [cut]
My cost for the service has increased incrementally every year or two too... from 38.50 when I first got the service known as "Wave" to $40.39 (changed to eXpress), $41.79, 42.45, to the current $44.95!!!!!!!!!
Why are costs being increased when service is unchanged? (Inflation cant be used as an excuse!)
Its time for the company to give us what we really pay for! And thats better services with the new technologies.
Damn profiteering Gluttons! The Cisco uBR 10012 is considered the flagship CMTS for Cisco, and it also just got Docsis 3.0 certification. I've only had their service for a year, but looking at old reviews, in 2002 the speed was at 2Mbps, in 2003 it was 3Mbps, 2004 5mbps, 2007, 6mbps.
I would've liked 7 or 8mbps to keep with the pattern though.
The only thing i can think of with the price is they want you to bundle with another service. If you do that, its 40$. I don't agree with it tho, but :/
I'm not defending them, im just calling it the way i see it. -- Success is measured by effort. Discover Hamilton |
