Re: We need TBS HD!

Just because they will broadcast in 1080i 24/7 doesn't mean all programming will be true HD.
Thats right, because some of there older shows (Seinfeld and such) were not shot in HD, so they will have to be upconverted....which isnt the same as stretch-o-vision.

TBS has said that all programming, including commercials, will be full screen. That means all 4:3 source material will be upconverted and then stretched on TBS-HD, just like they do on TNT-HD.

The TBS News Release:

TBS To Bring New Definition to Comedy with TBS in HD

High-Def Service Slated To Launch Sept. 1

Comedy is about to be defined in a whole new way as TBS prepares to enter the HDTV arena with the launch of TBS in HD in September, it was announced today by Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks. The HDTV simulcast of TBS’s East Coast feed will offer viewers a stellar line-up of comedy that includes such exclusive programs as the TBS original series My Boys and The Bill Engvall Show, which are being shot in high-definition; first-run series like Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, which recently set an ad-supported cable ratings record; hot contemporary sitcoms like Seinfeld, Friends, Everybody Loves Raymond and Sex and the City; and highly rated comedy specials like World’s Funniest Commercials. TBS in HD will launch Saturday, Sept. 1.

"With the launch of TBS in HD, we will bring an outstanding line-up of comedy programming to our viewers in a video format that is on the fast track to becoming the industry and consumer standard," said Koonin. "We are extremely proud to bring TBS to the HD world."

"TBS is an excellent choice to be among the latest high-definition offerings from Turner Broadcasting," said Coleman Breland, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Turner Network Sales. "With the very best comedy line-up on television, TBS in HD is certain to be a big draw for viewers."

In addition to the network’s top-rated line-up of comedy programming, TBS in HD will also showcase high-def presentations of TBS’s exclusive coverage of the Major League Baseball’s Division Series Playoffs and the National League Championship Series.

TBS in HD will be broadcast in 1080i 24 hours a day and use Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound across all TBS in HD programming. In addition, TBS in HD will present all of its programming, including promotional content and commercials, in 16:9 wide-screen, giving viewers a consistent viewing experience.

There is only one way to get 4:3 source material to 16:9.

Stretch o vision is not the same as up conversion. Look at the premium movie channels, some of the movies they show are also upconverted for there HD channels. 16:9 widescreen IS the HD standard.

Turn on TNT-HD when they show something that was from a 4:3 source (say NYPD Blue) you'll see upconverted Stretch-o-Vision.

I'm done.

Turn it on ESPN HD and you will see upconverted programming to 720p, which looks light years better (to me anyways) than TNT's broadcasts of stretcho. ESPN use to do stretch-o, but gave it up.

I recently switched to Cablevision primarily for more HD content. I actually like the Voom channels. Yeah, the recycle the content a bit too much, but every so often you get new premieres in HD. Now with TBS HD, all the better. I personally like CV better than when I had DirecTV and I was with them for about 7 years. It's only a matter of time before CV adds those other HD channels. And I won't have to put an ever bigger dish on my roof or be concerned about the trees behind my house.

It's good that they are adding this channel. Now they need to get on adding other ones as well. I am tired of watching all these channels that say, "In HD where available" in all their promos but can't get the HD because... it's not available!

Re: We need TBS HD!--DONE DEAL!

Good to hear I'll be able to see the Yankee games in HD.

Any word if or when we'll get Discovery Channel HD, TLC HD, Animal Planet HD and The Science Channel HD. I'm hoping it doesn't take as long as it took for cablevision to get discover hd theater.

Bzzzzzt. Thank you for playing. You are the weakest link. Goodbye.

Maybe you are thinking of FIOS TV which will add it after the playoffs if they add it at all?

The swing of what CV offers in HD vs FIOS now is becoming great enough to consider switching back to CV. FIOS hasn't even hinted at any plans for additional HD channels and is lagging behind CV now.

The Voom channels rule. Anyone who says they repeat too much of their programming just doesn't get it. Take the History Channel for example. You can catch the same show 3 times a day and on weekends.

Let's just be honest with ourselves about TBS HD. Had it not been for the MLB playoffs, no one would've cared. After it's over, this channel's value drops hardcore. We all will be clamoring for another quality HD channel come November.

Re: We need TBS HD!--DONE DEAL!

Please note that even the story announcing this says that it is not an officially done deal yet. It is an unconfirmed report, and as far as I can see, there is nothing on the Cablevision website about adding this channel.

So do we know which area will be getting TBS-HD on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday? Usually someone is nice enough to post that information here.

The question now is... does anyone really care about this channel now that the METS destroyed their season over the last two weeks?
