Re: New speeds for internet coming! I've been with mountain for years (back even when they were "Wave"... about 1998), speeds have never changed, they've added a couple 10000 series Cisco routers to their network to increase the amount of connections they can handle (note: they are about a decade old already... ancient compared to today's technologies) and not too much else other than software updates/upgrades. They've (meaning the many different hapless techno-weenies) told me over the years they were keeping the speeds at 5mb to keep the service consistent for all users. Loads of crap! The only reason for this 'explanation' would be because of the lack of investing towards new equipment. The infrastructure is already there, since they use existing fibre optic lines that were installed in the mid & late 90's by the city for their network upgrading needs. Its a sad thing to see other ISP's increase their speeds regularly every 3 to 4 years to continue to be competitive, while mountain cable (with its huge expenditures on increasing the levels of digital television capabilities) continues to fall behind in the ISP market. The only reason 80% of their customers are with Mountain Cable is because DSL in Hamilton has never been great and that the only cable service in these customer's areas is mountain cable.
I go to my gf's house and use her computer sometimes to download larger things (1 to 9GB!) ... she's with Cogeco. Ive recorded her top speed (through a Linksys router on top of that) of 1.2mbps (1.04mbps steady) in an actual download using a large file (winxp sp2 redistributable from microsoft.com/downloads .. about 238mb) which in my own home directly from main cable line to modem to my computer averages 430kbps at low network traffic times of 4AM to 7AM (peaks at 760kbps then drops steadily all the way down to about 280kbps - SEEMS TO SUPPORT THAT THROTTLING THEORY MENTIONED EARLIER!!)
My cost for the service has increased incrementally every year or two too... from 38.50 when I first got the service known as "Wave" to $40.39 (changed to eXpress), $41.79, 42.45, to the current $44.95!!!!!!!!!
Why are costs being increased when service is unchanged? (Inflation cant be used as an excuse!)
... Im not negative or positive (though is seems all pretty negative). I just want to point out that if they're going to charge us more for our regular service, while implementing higher speeds for what... increased costs again... it'll just make us want to switch to someone else.
So in light of the supposed updates to their services, those implementations should be replacement of the 5mb/s full eXpress service, not a new eXpress version costing upwards of what... possibly $75-$100?
Its time for the company to give us what we really pay for! And thats better services with the new technologies.

Damn profiteering Gluttons! The Cisco uBR 10012 is considered the flagship CMTS for Cisco, and it also just got Docsis 3.0 certification. I've only had their service for a year, but looking at old reviews, in 2002 the speed was at 2Mbps, in 2003 it was 3Mbps, 2004 5mbps, 2007, 6mbps.
I would've liked 7 or 8mbps to keep with the pattern though.
The only thing i can think of with the price is they want you to bundle with another service. If you do that, its 40$. I don't agree with it tho, but :/
I'm not defending them, im just calling it the way i see it. -- Success is measured by effort. Discover Hamilton | |
