konaguy....let us know when you find out more info on the speed increase! Like when will it take into effect and such.
The upload increase is already active. Just reboot your cable modem. As for the download speed increase, there should an article in the papers tomorrow about it.

I guess I have to call Oceanic. The Advertiser article is confusing. There is a chart but that is for the FIRST YEAR ONLY and doesn't take into consideration bundling of services so I am not clear on what exactly I would pay for the new RR turbo at 8/1 (not the RR extreme turbo which is at 15/1). It looks like 8/1 is $10 a month more. Not worth it because I don't get 5ms down now so why would I pay more for what I won't get?

I can't imagine why anyone would pay for 15/1 unless you are on Oahu. They get the advertised speed ...those of us on the neighbor islands don't. Plus, neither of these will be available in many areas especially on the neighbor islands.

I still would prefer DSL as the much better deal. Maybe if Oceanic ever gets cell phone (or applies to the PUC for internet phone to be carrier class) then their deals will be decent but currently HawTel has the best packages.

i hope increase in speed will also trickle down to the business class side. it's such a waste to pay more and get less than stellar speeds. the only reason why i went with business class was because the upload speeds were faster. now that rr residential is up to par in upload speeds, it makes me sick to wonder if business class will leave the speeds the same. business class sales team is really horrible when it comes to returning client calls and stuff (at least my rep is guilty of that) I'm not sure about the rest though.

@rr.com

The newspaper says: "Oceanic Time Warner Cable TODAY is rolling out a faster version of its market-leading Road Runner Internet service"

I called to upgrade and they said there is a waiting list. How do you advertise that it's available TODAY, October 1st and then say there is a waiting list. Isn't that false advertising?

Waiting list? Why is there a waiting list? Usually customer services reps are able to do it over the phone. Very interesting. I spoke to the Business class side and they said they just had an upgrade about 1 month ago. That's such a joke as far as upgrade. Hawaiian telcom business class pkgs are more fair than time warners business class service. The business class sales team here on Oahu is such a joke. I would not recommend BC service. Stick with residential unless you have to. To order business class service takes about a week and the sales dept aren't even open on the weekends. I think I'm paying more for less service.

Well, it's even worse news for me.

I called this morning and asked about the new speeds. The CSR had to put me on hold to ask about the "specs" and then she came back and said "actually since you are already a road runner customer you get the turbo for no additional charge. just re-set your modem."

i said, um, are you sure that isn't just for the new upload speeds? and also, isn't there a higher tier that I can pay for.

She said that they are "just testing" the turbo plus (15Mb) in certain areas and that they don't expect kaneohe to get them for a few months.

that sucks

so i said okay, well since i now get the turbo speeds for free, what is that speed? She said 8Mb.

Of course when I got off the phone i re-booted my modem and still get the same old 4Mb down speed (paying for 5) that i always get.

so no turbo plus for me, and just a tease of free turbo I guess.

whoever gets to kaneohe with their new speeds first will prbably get my business.

I just called and spoke to a woman. She said it isn't available in my area. LOL. How's that one? That's ridiculous. But I guess until HawTel upgrades our area that's when we'll get the 15/1. That's the most bogus crap I ever heard. Not available in your area. I'm not even in the boondocks either.

I just called -- not available in my area (Thurston Street in Makiki) and put my name on wait list. Turbo has been working fine, though. And I reset my modem and double my upload speed...

I really think the online article is misleading. It doesn't state that it isn't available in select areas. Why wasn't that mentioned? I'd call and complain to Oceanic but the rep isn't the one who did it so there's no sense in doing that. I feel sorely disappointed that it isn't available in my area which is in the heart of Hawaii. I'm located in and around the Pearl Harbor area. I have no idea why that area would not be ready.

You have to wonder where it is available. I asked and she couldn't tell me. I'm guessing maybe only Oceanic. How can town and Pearl Harbor not have it available. My guess is it isn't ready and they wanted to launch something back at HT as soon as possible. Sounds like something set up to fail though. I am upset that they advertised it and it isn't available island wide.

Oceanic appears to have pulled a "fast one" just like HawTel did earlier. If we call and complain about false advertising, or possibly go to the Office of Consumer Protection with the complaint, Oceanic has their bases covered. They will blame the Advertiser for printing incorrect information/misleading information, etc. Oceanic will point to its own website where there is nothing about this. They will say that the Advertiser got the information as leaked, or some such nonsense, and that all they expected the Advertiser to print was the new upload speed. Of course, that isn't even on their Current Promos and Announcements page either.

I hope I am wrong but this is how it appears. I really appreciate the new upload speed and I thank Oceanic for that but I disapprove of how they are handling any possible download speed increases. It is very confusing what is being offered. There is nothing on the Oceanic website and to raise hopes falsely, like HawTel recently did, just puts Oceanic in the same sleazeball category. I had hoped they would be a bit more professional than HawTel. Here was their chance and they blew it. It appears the download increases are mostly smoke and mirrors just as they are for most who have HawTel.

Below is the link to Oceanic's "Current Promotions and Announcements" page. What is there has not changed for some time. Thnere is nothing there about the new upload speed or the Turbo extreme, etc.

Looks like the free upload speed increase was smoke and mirrors also. I just rebooted the computer, after unplugging the modem and router for a few minutes, on the outside chance I would get the "free" 8ms down. Ha! Instead I not only didn't get it but look at the upload speed. It is right back where it was before the SUPPOSED upgrade.

EDIT: Evidently there are problems with the new upload speed. It is very inconsistent on a variety of speed tests and has been from the moment I got it. Plus, the test I posted shows an upload burst...cheating...but reveals the real speed on that Oceanic test was nothing like what it is supposed to be.

I just did a speed test to the West Coast. Explain to me how I can get a BETTER DOWNLOAD speed on the SAME speed test (Visualware's MySpeed) all the way to San Jose, California than I do on the Oceanic test right here on Oahu? (I suppose because the Oceanic test is HTTP and the San Jose one is socket to socket)?

I was informed that the high speed RR service is currently only available in Kaimuki on Oahu. Also apparently only Oahu and Kauai will get the service initially. Then Maui and the Big Island a month after.

FYI, the you can get dry DSL for the higher speed tiers on HT.

3Mbps/768K is 34.99 a month
7Mbps/1Mbps 44.99 a month
11Mbps/11Mbps 54.99 a month

Its pretty clear, the 8Mbps/1Mbps RR Turbo is 9.95 more and the RR Turbo Plus will be 24.95 more. It just depends on what package you get from Oceanic.

So, Oceanic has been lying all this time and Turbo has never been available to the Big Island? That is false advertising for sure if true.

When I meant the high speed service, I referred to the 15Mbps/1Mbps product. The 8Mbps/1Mbps product is available here on the Big Island.

It is not at all clear. How can you say it is clear? It depends on if you have packages what Turbo and Turbo Extreme will cost and it depends on which packages. Plus, it depends if you are bulk in a building or in a stand alone residence or bulk with enough users in the building to qualify for a big discount rate. It is not even clear if 8/1000 will be free. That is what a lot of Oceanic employees are now stating. But typical with Oceanic no one really knows anything.

Plus, it would be extrmely unfair of Oceanic to offer better prices to newbies for a whole year than what they offer long time users who have suffered through all the messes over the years and who now get nothing for customer loyalty? Shit what you are saying is that you could switch back to RR and you, as a "new" customer would get 8/1 for $29.99 for a year but anyone who has stayed with RR has to now pay a penalty for their loyalty. That is crap.

So you are stating that 8/1 is not high speed? It's "low speed"? Well what is 5/1 then? "Extra low speed"?

5/1 is standard
8/1 is Turbo
15/1 is Turbo Plus

I thnk everyone should use the correct terms to avoid misunderstandings.

BTW where is RR lite? It wasn't listed in the Advertiser's table.

I think that is a state secret within Oceanic to not publicly release information on that 768K/128K service. Since its only 25.95 a month . Ooops... Did I just say that
