The girl is at fault, i recommend she gets all XP updates and removes the firewall. Then install something like comodo, kerio, zonealarm firewall + spybot like the guy above me said.
Spyware blaster, spyware terminator, spyware doctor etc. Also Windows defender from MS themselves (i know)

Though you don't really need them if you have safe browsing habbits and don't forget Firefox or Opera.

You are so right. Safe browsing habits are the best defense, but too many people don't use caution on the web. That's why all these security products have a market. Before the web, there were boot sector viruses that traveled from one computer to another via sneaker net. The safe practice then was to avoid putting strange floppies into your drive, and to write-protect any floppy that you carried to another computer.
It was a simpler world, but computers still got infected.
