It's Not So Bad Keeping It a Secret - Here's Why

At first I was upset that Packet 8 didn't mention the VOIP carrier it is taking over. I didn't want to be in a Sunrocket situation again!!! (By the way, I finally got my phone number ported over the end of Sept. which ws 10 weeks after signing up with my new company!) However, on giving it more thought, I realized how different my situation would have been had Sunrocket did that. First of all, Sunrocket would have sold all its assets to the new company. The new company would have integrated my account into their organization probably without my knowing it. True, there might have been some bumps, but I'm sure when I called the Sunrocket number, I wouldn't have known the new company would actually be handling the calls as the phone number I was dialing would have Sunrocket's number. I'm sure the problem would have been handled in an expedient manner because there wouldn't have been 200,000 people scrambling to find a company clogging the phone lines of Sunrocket and most of its competitors. Then once my number was ported over to the new company, and everyone was functioning well, a press release could have gone out to all former Sunrocket customers that their service has been incorporated into the absorbing company, and the service you have recently been getting is a result of the new service. Then they could have given the new price guidelines giving the people a chance to stay or leave the new company. I know that if they charged me 5-10 more per month, I might have stayed with the new company rather than go through the hassle of switching companies. We paid very little for Sunrocket. They gave the store away with all their half price promotions. That's why they couldn't stay in business. I was extremely happy with their service and had them over 2 years. I saw the improvement in their service. The first year I had them, it was truly bumpy, but they came back and gave me points, extra phones, a promotion renewal price to keep me as a customer, but you can't give all that away and stay in business. Let's hope that Packet 8 is smart when they absorb this company and won't start a mass panic as what happened when Sunrocket went under.

According to this thread, it's the PrivatePhone Voice Service:

»NetZero/PrivatePhone discontinuing Voice Service

I use their free voicemail only service. If it's the voice service, I wouldn't think it's a big win for Packet8. I don't think this service has that many paying customers to begin with.

i do not think it has any paying customers; its a free service. but it will not be free if you take the packet8 offer. i am one on the privatephone users. i am pretty upset that they did not work something out with a similar free service for number porting. the logical choices would be aimphoneline or grandcentral. i will be contacting both aol and google to see if they can port my number.
