| Torrent or p2p speed test needed
Apologies in advance if this is the wrong forum for this..
ISPs are rated by their speed and service. Current speed tests supported by BroadbandReports make the speed metric accessible to consumers like me when shopping. I suggest a "peer-to-peer speed test" metric, if it became popular, might influence ISPs with respect to product offerings.
...assuming it's possible to overcome the port configuration hurdle.

| Where would you get the speed from a p2p or torrent? I highly doubt people are just going to leave their torrent programs open to have someone test their speed, and even if you did, theres not enough speed for a true test.

Clarifying a little.. I imagine that your first thoughts of a p2p speed test are different than mine. I'll share a little more so you can further disagree or agree.
If ISP "A" sees he's rated bottom of the heap in the p2p category.. and realizes that ALL his market can see that as well, through publicly available information, he might think he can get a few more customers from ISP "B" by offering a p2p enabled product offering at a profitable price.
Regarding the p2p speed test implementation..
Imagining again.. a Java app that uses p2p protocols to download from 40 or 50 sites that currently host existing speed tests.. and posts results at a popular place.. like Broadband.com. It could be possible. Alternatively, the swarm could be free and self sustaining or a combo of fixed and free peers.

If there are filters that slow down VOIP or P2P traffic then presumably they could be fooled to trigger by imitation traffic as well. A java applet and a server could exchange fake p2p or fake voip traffic to see if it worked at the same speed as generic or port 80 traffic. |

One day you might get a great speed from user "x" but the next day user "x" is upload a lot of data and your speed from user "x" would decrease...
