current equipment will continue to work under DOCSIS 3....up to it's current limitations (somewhere around 16/2--20/2, based on currently deployed markets)
for many users that would be plenty, at least for a few years.
DOCSIS 3 modems aren't likely to be as cheap or available as current DOCSIS 1.1-2 models, at least at first, so early adopters are likely to have to rent or pay a premium for first generation DOCSIS 3 modems (and live with version 1 bugs)
but I'd agree that anyone should think very carefully before buying any DOCSIS 1.1-2 equipment at full price right now

Excellent point Rick.

I now agree with your comments.

I used to own an SB5100 modem. Last march I signed up for CDV and got the SBV5220. So I gave away my SB5100 to a friend in need.

When Docsis 3.0 comes out, I guess they have to come up with not only new modems, but new eMTA's as well.

Bring it on, I say.

IMHO..I wouldn't be buying any modem right now. With CEO Roberts demoing Docsis 3.0 several months ago along with his related comments since then, I think it's pretty safe to say that comcast will be rolling this out at a rapid pace next year. And, all indications point to this being a relatively inexpensive rollout for them, and one that doesn't require much if any plant upgrades.

IMHO..that equals Comcast soon becoming docsis 3.0 compliant in many areas and for all intents and purposes, our current equipment becoming obsolete. (although 3.0 is backwards compatible with earlier versions..you couldn't enjoy the benefits 3.0 will bring)

Exactly when and where it first starts to happen remains to be seen. But, I think if you start to do some simple math, you'll see that renting going forward might be the better option.

3.00 a month x 12 = 36.00.
Even if 3.0 didn't hit your area until this same time next year..renting would still be the better option versus the cost of a (new) modem.

And, even if it were to take two years..renting would still be pretty comparable to the cost of buying a modem today.

Obviously, some sites and stores have offers for free modems after rebate and that remains the best option..but for simply replacing a modem..I'm not sure one can beat the 3.00 /month rental option right now.

you can use it for data maybe if it isnt listed as stolen that is.
True, they could be stolen. I mean if you can't purchase these through retail outlets, where are these sellers getting the eMTA's from?

So I'm guessing it's more of a liability reason that Comcast (or any other CableCo for that matter) doesn't allow you to purchase your own eMTA? For instance, say you cannot call 911 because you purchased a crap eMTA and wired it up with crap RadioShack RG-59 VCR Jumper wires off of gold 4 way splitters. So now you sue Comcast for it...

I can understand that logic. Some people like to buy though to avoid a monthly rental fee. I think Comcast would benefit from a lease-to-own project. After say 3 years of $3 a month, they should call it 'paid off' and stop charging for the rental.

There was an article on dslreports news (the number one broadband news source) saying that Comcast was offering self install voice. It included a Comcast provided 3 handset cordless phone. I will try to find a link. I only remember, because I shuddered when I saw it. As far as using an eMTA, im sure you could use it for data, but not voice...yet.

You can buy it, but it will be an expensive paper weight. Comcast is NOT, repeat not, allowing customer owned EMTA equipment at this time.

Comcast may allow customer owned equipment in the future, but as far as we have been told on the front lines, not at this time.
Yep. They are so critical that their CDV service functions correctly (911 emergencies and all) that they will only allow professional techs to do the installation and no subscriber self installs are allowed as of yet.

[Edit]

Sorry for the "ECHO" gar, didn't see your post...

I cant reply for Comcast..But the provisioning of a voice device goes far beyond that of a modem.

Just noticed that Amazon.com has the Motorola SBV5220 eMTA with battery:

$79.95

Wait, I guess it's used?

Is that legal, would Comcast provision a customer OWNED eMTA? Not just for data but for voice as well?

If not, why?
