Re: Philadelphia / Tiling on CN, TBS

Update: Gustavo replied to my update in the direct forum. He said that, as of two hours after my update above, the folks at the VHO say the issue is now fixed. No word on why I got an automated phone call before it was totally fixed. Keep your eyes peeled. They think they have it licked - this time.

I don't think it's completely fixed. That, or something has gone horribly wrong here. I'm now seeing problems on random channels that were unaffected before (50, 171) - minor tiling, audio breakups, freezing ~1:30AM.

Turner networks look better now, though.

I too received an update on the Direct Forum that the group outage ticket was resolved.

I've not seen any issues last night or this morning.

The litmus test in this house will be when the kids start vegging out in front of the TV watching Cartoon Network and Boomerang this morning.

Things the make you go HMMMMM ....

Would that make the "resolve" time to be about 5 PM Eastern on Friday?
Interesting ... just in time for happy hour ...

Definitely not fixed here. Saw tiling (horizontal bar) across the screen on CNN.

Agreed - I saw some pixellation on TBS (very minor, and pretty infrequent - probably twice in the course of an hour or so).

I am seeing it on CNN and TNT.

Between 6 and 7 PM, I was watching CNN and I saw it occur once -- it was in the middle of screen. Had flipped through other channels during this time and saw it on TNT at the top of the screen.

It is nothing like the pixelation and tiling I was seeing last weekend. Given the infrequency and severity of it, I doubt many customers are going to pick up on it.

As far as Cartoon Network and Boomerang, the kids said they never saw "the noise" when they were watching today.

It's not 100% fixed, whatever Verizon did helped a lot though.

Edit -- There is still a lot of TV watching to do this weekend, so I'm not ready to say its fixed. I'll keep watching until Monday ...

I haven't seen anything else occur since I've been out for most of the day.

They did what they usually do. Duct tape, bubble gum, Band-Aids®, string. Wait and watch, it's going to get a lot worse in a few weeks.

Ok, here's the latest. My wife got not one, but two calls from Verizon this afternoon. One was from the tech that was set to come out. Both told her (mostly) the same thing. First that there is definitely a network problem. And second, that it's still being worked (sounds like the CSR I talked to today got that part wrong). The one difference in the stories that these two guys told had to do with the scope of the problem. One told her that it was a national problem, the other said that it was specific to Philly. Clearly it's the latter.
I have noticed it here in the DC area for months (SD channels mostly), when the baseball playoffs were on it was very noticeable. I called VZ and 2 techs came to my house about 1 month ago.

They saw it and basically laughed and said that it was not a problem with VZ, but from TBS/TNT....the broadcaster.

They were nice, but just said that there was nothing they could do to fix it...they said when someone complains about pixelation it is when the whole screen has big artifact squares. On mine it was small ones, looks like grains of sand, but still makes the shows not fun to watch.

Bottom line is.....VZ always falls back on 'it's not us, we just pass the signal on from the broadcaster, it is them & their feed'

So my question is this: When VZ says that, what is the answer for us??? How can we get those channels fixed? (I did by the way send TBS/TNT an e-mail complaining, never got a reply).

The group ticket itself has been closed and the issue for what other customers were experiencing at that time has been resolved. Unfortunately, this was not related to the issue you have been reporting. Unfortunately, we still do not have a resolution for your situation; however, I'll continue to inquire with our engineers to hopefully find something.
asdfasdfasdfarrrgh

if you're still having problems with these channels, please report it to them - they think that it's been totally resolved and that my issue is completely unrelated

noping,

Right, the group ticket is closed. My original problem was reported for 60 (ESPN), 163 (CourtTV), 201 (AMC), 227 (Cartoon Network) and 228 (Boomerang). Those channels seem to be fine.

I've seen the glitches on CNN, CNN Headline News, and TNT this weekend. I've still got a ticket open for that. The status seems to be "we will watch and wait."

So to all the readers and lurkers, if you see the problem then definitely report it.

For what it's worth, I saw no pixellation on TBS or ESPN yesterday at all. I saw very minor pixellation on Saturday, but nothing on Sunday.

FWIW, add WHYY-HD (812) tonight during the News Hour broadcast (6:30 - 7 PM when I viewed). Severe pixelation and audio dropouts for almost a second at a time. Didn't notice any problems when I switched to WPVI-HD for a minute or so.

However, this program is letterboxed and no pixelation was noted in the letterbox (black bar) area. Me thinks that if it was due to the distribution system, the entire picture would be pixelated. Since it's only in the letterbox area, maybe it's at the source (formatting) before it gets out to fiber.

But... my NGC-HD recording had lots of glitches when I recorded a show Sunday night and watched later.

Back to the Flyers on Versus - SD (!).

Sheesh, five player suspensions already...

Nothing new to report, still seeing problems on TBS/TNT/CNN. No more problems with 50 since that one occurrence the other evening. I rarely watch ESPN so I can't comment on whether or not that's been fixed.

Something I thought was worth mentioning - if you opened a trouble ticket last week before/during the group outage ticket and if you are still seeing problems, ask them to re-issue a new ticket since all tickets attached to the group ticket were closed when they supposedly "fixed" the problem.

Still tiling on TBS, TNT, CNN. Also seeing problems (still!) on CN, Boomerang. It's very infrequent but it's there.

ESPN (60) as well - I tuned in for SportsCenter's coverage of the Mitchell report, saw it once. No clue if it's happened since Thursday.

Also still running into the occasional audio dropouts on USA Network. Now I know that the problem that I experienced with this channel days ago wasn't a fluke.

Anyone have any suggestions on how I would get in contact with the local franchise authority like knarf suggested earlier in the thread?

They usually put it on your bill in the TV section.

Noping-
Send an email to the President (address is in the "billing nightmares" thread).

Don't be nice - or they won't do anything. Be a royal prick - and you'll be amazed what happens.

Ugh ... haven't seen it here.

If it is infrequent, then it could just a be a timing thing. I was feeling sooooooo good about this problem for the past week.

Now I'm going to get all worried about it again ...

Ok, JeepMatt IS special here, a genuine FiOS TV refugee, so he gets an automatic 'Get Out Of Troll Free' card for the effort.

The guy has been through the 'Verizon FiOS TV Ringer' enough, and although he switched back to Comcast for TV service, he earns an official 'Learners Permit To Troll', but if he gets obnoxious about it, well....

That is what the "Hey Mods" button is for.

Use it wisely, if necessary....

JeepMatt, you have been warned.

Your helpful comments are welcome, but please don't bust on us downtrodden Verizon TV customers, while playing up your own Comcast TV service.

Let's try and keep the peace around here....
