| reply to GeekGirl1 Re: Philadelphia / Tiling on CN, TBS
Geek- Ironically, even at the end of a line - all my levels are great. SNR's in 35-36 range - no errors.
I was surprised. Tech had to attenuate the signal down, just like FIOS> -- "ONE team - ONE city - ONE dream!!" |

| Things are hopping tonight! I took my original post over to AVS forum, then you answered here. That was what my levels were on Comcast last year before they did their last major channel upgrade. Then the system got overloaded and the problems reached a breaking point. Will have to wait until my service agreement is up.
Back to baseball... (wait a sec, hockey is on VS now ). |

| reply to noping said by noping :Signs of tiling noticed on TBS around 8-9PM during Family Guy. Also signs of tiling noticed on Cartoon Network just now during Futurama. Anyone else in the Philadelphia area notice anything strange on these or any other channels this evening? Noping, I just got back from a 15th Anniversary dinner out with the Mrs. this evening, and my kids actually DVR'd some of the problems they were seeing on CN this evening, and I since then have seen Boomerang doing the same 'minor' tiling effect.
Same $#it, different day. I don't even bother to call about it anymore, they just reset the boxes and ONT each time, then tell me a tech needs to stop by to check the signal levels again.
Once again, Thanks for choosing Verizon.... -- "Lithium is no longer available on credit" |

| reply to JeepMatt Matt, When I first switched to Fios TV, most folks didn't believe my comment that the Comcast picture quality was on par with Fios (at least in my area). The only channels, if at all, which I thought looked better on Fios were NBC and CSN. I also happen to live on a decent part of the Comcast network.
Almost all of my viewing is confined to the major networks in HD. For the most part I haven't experienced any issues that I would waste my time calling in about.
My bottom line is price. I got a better deal with Verizon. My last Comcast TV bill alone was $130 and that was after I got rid of an HD box and some movie channels.
It seems the only way to get a decent price on tv service these days is to bundle. Verizon clearly has a better internet service than Comcast, and since I work from home that is the most important factor to me. |

join:2007-06-02 | As far as TBS, it may be a provider problem. I'm watching Post Game Live on Comcast Sportsnet, and stutters and tiles are evident in some of the clips they're playing from today's game. I doubt Comcast is getting TBS via Verizon FiOS. |

2 edits | The Phillies game had a severe amount of compression. Stuttering and audio dropouts. It looked like I was watching it from an internet feed. Aside from the game results, the amount of compression seemed to change with the camera shot angle. Are they packet shaping? Maybe I'm seeing changes over time. In any case, PQ stunk.
The TBS studio commentators, Cal Ripken and The Big Hurt, had excellent discussions on pitching sequences.
HDNet Hockey is back! It almost makes me forget about this TBS fiasco. Almost. I've got till January. |

3 edits | reply to noping Still seeing tiling on CN and TBS. Problem on USA Network from the other night seems to have disappeared.
Gustavo reported that the "video network team" didn't see anything. If they watched for longer periods of time (instead of "several minutes" then flipping to the other channel), I'd bet that they would see it. Again, it's not the "constant tiling" that those of us in the Philadelphia area have seen...it's entirely random and fairly infrequent, seems to be limited only to these two channels?
Anyone else still seeing this happen? There's another person complaining about this in the Direct forum (also from PA) but I don't know what to make of that.
I should start recording examples of the tiling effect to the DVR and find/hook up a Slingbox to it and see if they want to see for themselves. Apparently, that's what they're using to monitor remotely... -- # /sbin/reboot |

I was kind of suprised I didn't hear more folks complaining about the tiling this weekend. On my tivo it was unwatchable on channels 60-64. All ESPN content. The Moto box was better at handling the issues, but far from perfect broadcasts. I even some some of the issues on SHOHD as well. Nothing major, but defintiely not perfect.
I was really disappointed in the Tivo's handling of the issues. Major and prolonged pixellation vs. the Moto's minor annoyances of infrequent tiling. |

| said by JeepMatt :Hoop- The Tivo is less tolerable of a sub-par signal..hence, what you witnessed. I believe that statement.
The TiVO is more of a precision device, and is far less tolerant of signal quality degradation than the cookie cutter Motorola boxes that Verizon uses.
Motorola makes boxes that will work over a very wide level of signal quality, TiVO on the other hand, implies a level of perfection with their DVR's, and has little tolerance with the received signal being out of whack. -- "Lithium is no longer available on credit" |

| KA- I understand the Tivo may be more sensitive. I guess my frustration lies in the fact that my video signal is generated from the ONT a mere 30 ft away from the Tivo over brand new cable and connectors. I mean what causes the Tivo's signal strength on a certain frequency to jump all around, while the dB strength stays the exact same?
I just don't understand why Verizon has such trouble with their video infrastructure. |

| reply to noping Tiling effect continues. Same as always, it's a horizontal line of blocks.
Seen on: Yankees/Indians game on TBS (now), "Courage the Cowardly Dog" (around 7-8PM, child DVR'd example), DVR'd content from last night -- When no one was looking, Lex Luthor took forty cakes. He took 40 cakes. That's as many as four tens. And that's terrible. |

I can't count the times I asked my wife if she had hit pause by mistake, as on a DVR playback.
Nope, the picture completely freezes in place with no audio either.
The Philly VHO setup ain't worth $hit, and I really think that Verizon sees the problem, but has no clue as to how to correct it.
With all the criticisms from Fios TV customers out of the area, it's almost like we need a FiOS TV Philadelphia forum to proper address the localized problems.
I am sure FiOS TV might be the best thing going elsewhere, but if you are in Southeastern, PA, Southern New Jersey, or Northern Delaware, and are served from the Philly VHO, FIOS has had CHRONIC problems for months now.
No solution is in sight either...
We really need a Verizon FiOS TV forum, just for the Philadelphia area. -- "Lithium is no longer available on credit" |

KA3SGM, bgeoghan, is there any chance that the two of you can start threads in the Direct forum about this? It's been days now and it's still not fixed; maybe if more people make a fuss over this they'll finally take a serious look into the problem?
They're doing the same thing, watching the feed for a few minutes then flipping to something else. What we need is someone in the "video team" to sit and watch via the Slingboxes that they use for a decent amount of time. Getting paid to watch tee vee? What technician wouldn't want that? (well, maybe not, given how it's TBS and CN)
Gustavo seems to have disappeared, Joseph is filling in. |

Just had the FIOS TV install done on 10/2. The SD picture quality has improved greatly since the install. The initial SD quality was not very good at all.
Collegeville was just brought up on 9/28. |
