Other than the problem that I saw on USA Network the other night, I can't say that I've seen much tiling or audio problems on channels other than these two. -- When no one was looking, Lex Luthor took forty cakes. He took 40 cakes. That's as many as four tens. And that's terrible. |

2 edits | reply to AVITWeb Here's another perspective:
Cable has a top-notch quality head-end (where they put all the channels together for transmission to your home). They save cost by going cheap on the distribution to the home, which results in a degraded signal. The pain is experienced by the customers who are in the marginal signal level areas.
Fiber-optic has a very fine distribution system, where the signal quality is pristine from the head-end (VHO) all the way to the customer's TV. They save cost by going cheap on the VHO. The pain is shared by everyone, but not all at the same time. Unless they all watch the same channel.
System engineering says the total pain is the same. Take your pick. |

| reply to noping said by noping :KA3SGM, bgeoghan) Gustavo seems to have disappeared, Joseph is filling in. Noping, any contact that I have had with Verizon usually requires a tech visit to confirm. They don't believe a network problem ever exists.
I am about done with Fios TV, so I dont bother to call them anymore.
I can't do Comcast, and DISH is a mess.
DirectTV is a good possibility, although they would be required to mount the dish in my front yard.
That won't happen. -- "Lithium is no longer available on credit" |

But other markets (NY, northern NJ, VA, MA, MD, CA, FL, IN, TX) never seem to run into these sort of problems as frequently as we do...they must have better VHOs, then?
Now also seeing it on TNT SD. -- When no one was looking, Lex Luthor took forty cakes. He took 40 cakes. That's as many as four tens. And that's terrible. |

1 edit | Why am I not seeing any of this? I saw TBS problems last week, but then when Comcast Sportsnet was playing Phillies highlights from TBS it was evident on the highlights (meaning a provider problem).
Can we get a count of the folks that are actually seeing this instance of Philly problems? |

Even if I am completely off the mark, and this seems hilarious, I can see the STFU IM's rolling in now.
Just a bit of fic/Non-Fic/sic, take it for what you want to.
There was friction from the start between Comcast and Verizon over the whole Philadelphia area.
Verizon backed down and said they were not interested in the actual ' Philadelphia City ' thing for a video franchise, just the surrounding areas of Southeastern PA, Northern Delaware, and South Jersey, and Comcast seemed grateful in that notion, and let Verizon carry CSN Philly as their own olive branch.
To keep Comcast assured that Verizon was not moving in for a surprise attack, Verizon in turn built a far sub-standard VHO serving the Philly area.
One that might get the Philly suburbs running, but capacity restrained, with no possibility of being able to support any large amount of rapid customer growth, and completely incapable of supporting a roll out of the City of Philadelphia itself.
That theory would definitely offer an explanation of many of the problems we are experiencing here, that other markets are not, the reasons Philly is always last to get upgrades.
Face it folks, Philly got stuck with a lame ass VHO, and I don't think it is a mere coincidence.
I would hope they are secretly building Philly VHO 2.0, with plans to torch VHO 1.0 sometime soon, and cut over to the new 'World Class' VHO currently under construction, that they should have built here in the first place.
Sure Comcast would be highly pissed to find out Philadelphia has been working on a back room TV franchise deal with Verizon, the same way Mayor Michael Bloomberg did in New York City.
...and we would be cheering on the Camden Flyers and Sixers, and only be able to get to listen to the Phillies home games on AM radio.
If Verizon can do it right the second time around, Comcast could actually loose enough market share to be forced to sell off their sports team holdings. .... to Verizon, perhaps??
Then who knows what might happen...
A little role reversal, Verizon learns how to run a high end Cable TV business, and Comcast learns to run a real phone business.
The money is in TV/Broadband..
Just let Comcast siphon off as much crappy VoIP phone business it takes to overload their existing Cable TV plant, something maybe DOCISS 14.6 might help them out with, maybe not...
In 10 years who will be running the "Can you hear me now?" commercials.

| KA - I love the conspiracy theory. However, access to the CSN issue has been confirmed to be a result of them not having to access the feed from a dish.
Anyone actually know where the Philly VHO is physically located? I have this sneaking suspicion it is right here in Wayne on Lancaster Avenue. Just a hunch.... |

I'm still waiting for some sort of faux, half-hearted apology and explanation for the foul-up yesterday. Gustavo doesn't seem to be in today.
And the tiling continues, continues, continues. Testing the wall sockets with a multimeter shows a stable reading of ~120V, same as yesterday, and the day before that, and the day before that, and the...you get the idea.

This is what they have to say about Monday's botched appointment:
said by VZ_Gustavo :name, I am truly sorry about this. It looks like one of our agents pulled it out of dispatch and I'm trying to get a hold of him to find out what happened. I'm reluctant to set up another appointment until I discuss it with him so that we don't end up with the same problem. Again, I am truly sorry and will follow up with you once I have more information about the reason the dispatch was cancelled and why you were not notified. Sincerely, Hooper, did you open a trouble ticket? -- DANGER -- DO NOT LOOK INTO LASER WITH REMAINING EYE |

said by VZ_Gustavo :They referred the ticket back to our video network group. I'm sorry that you were not contacted, that is something that we at the FSC should have handled so that we do not waste your time. someone from verizon called me yesterday, said that they are "trying to getting the problem "resolved" since the ticket's been open since the first week of october - they were definitely running into problems getting the local guys out here
reason (emphasis mine):
said by VZ_Gustavo :Thanks again for your patience. The problem with sending another technician out is that they will go out, but will be unable to resolve the problem yet again, as there is not an issue at the premises (according the the techs). What this means is that we'll need to find resolution elsewhere. i think this is the first time they've looked into the possibility that the problem isn't here at the premises

They will likely not know what an IQ is, nor what right hands are either.
You will have then correctly identified the location of the Verizon Philly VHO.
Please place an appropriate pin on the local Philly FIOS Incompetency map.

ffs...
I called the FSC in an attempt to get a status update (the person who called on Sunday said he would call back within a few days - well, it's "a few" now).
Tried to explain to the FSC representative that scheduling an appointment == USELESS SINCE THEY WILL NOT COME OUT HERE ANYMORE, he didn't listen. Technician hung up, decided to schedule an appointment, called my home number instead of my cell and left a message saying that he scheduled someone for tomorrow. Tomorrow, when I'm not at home. I didn't ask for an appointment - he didn't even bother to ask me when I would be available.
Called in again, canceled the unwanted/useless technician visit. If the FSC rep who handled my second call is reading this - thanks, and apologies for the tone
I'll watch a bit of ESPNU tonight and see if I see anything like what I'm seeing on TBS/TNT/CNN/etc.
Moral of the story: Don't call the FSC looking for answers, VZDirect is the only better option. |
