| my thoughts on eyeTV turbo.264 hardware encoder
I picked one up along with an AppleTV and Airport Extreme this last weekend. I kept the appletv and APE, but returned the turbo.264. First of all, there was not much of a difference in encoding speed on my 2ghz 20" iMac. Second, it only works with QuickTime programs like QT Pro, iMovie, or EyeTV's bundled software. It was also very limited in the formats that it would convert...which was the sticking point for me. I have a huge number of movies encoded in XVID, which this could not convert. Back to good ol' Visualhub for all my encoding needs. -- MarkyD, Paper Tiger MCSA 2K3, SCNP, MCDST, MCITP, ACHDS, ACDT, ACPT, ACTC, A+, Network+ Security+, Server+, Certified Ethical Hacker |

I've read some reviews that the turbo.264 will not make a difference on some of the newer (and faster) Macs; but it does well on older Macs. That's where I said to myself, "Not going to buy it," and got VisualHub instead. VisualHub is awesome.

| I did some bench mark testing on one of the new intel core duo 2.4 ghtz machines. Without the turbo it took about 2 to 3 times longer to encode in apple tv and ipod video versions.
Then I tested it on my non intel dual 2ghtz G5 and it was about 8x faster with it than without. |
