1 edit | Re: A/V Chat FAQ - Submissions Wanted People try and say that one needs a 46-60" screen to get the benefit of 1920x1080p. BS!
I sit here with a kick-ass laptop screen(1920x1200) and it displays intense picture quality! I'm about ideal distance/screen size too! -- Think outside the Fox... Opera

| these two are regarding cables, and i feel would deserve a home in this faq: the answer that i found hard to swallow as a noob: does a dvi to hdmi cable carry audio? NO. hdmi to hdmi carries audio. dvi to hdmi will require separate cables for audio. question 2: do i need to spend $40 for a 6' hdmi cable? answer: many experts have not been able to tell the difference between a $40 or more cable and a $10 cable of the same length. -- The Geek Shall Inherit the Earth | |

1 edit | i had to use several sources to gather info for hooking my computer to my hi def tv. much of this also applies to cabling up other things like a dvd player. Q: what kind of cable should i use to hook my graphics card to my hi def tv? A: dvi-hdmi is best, component (red, green, blue)is next best, then s-video edit: keeping in mind that s-video also does not transmit audio, then composite or coax. Q: why does my graphics card display at such low res on my hdtv? A: (Jeff's vague answer) only the newest graphics cards specifically made for hi-def can output higher res. a good chart showing the res for various connections is on this page: »www.popularmechanics.com/technol···?page=21 -- The Geek Shall Inherit the Earth

1 edit | On some newer Blu-ray Discs, played on a computer, pointing and clicking the menu(s) doesn't work.
You have to use the arrow keys and Enter key... or use the remote if you have aplicable software/hardware. -- Think outside the Fox... Opera

| Re: A/V Chat FAQ - Submissions Wanted said by tahoejeff :Q: how can i hook up my HD satellite or cable set-top box to my computer so i can capture my favorite shows? A: in short: you cannot... Jeff, SUBMIT that to the FAQ. You'll get "credit" plus it helps increase your "Level" (I think).
I've just entered (2) of the posts from this thread myself.

1 edit | Re: A/V Chat FAQ - Submissions Wanted I understood completely but since I don't know much about A/V stuff, I thought someone would chime in with an updated and less complicated version of the link I posted. It hasn't been updated in 2 years and the title is a little deceiving.
When I see "Quick Guide" on anything, I'm expecting a short, simple, easy to follow guide. If that's a quick guide... I must be stupid.
I guess I'll post it and leave the rest up to the mods. -- Prevent Malware

| Here is a few things I'd put in a FAQ:
•Digital does not always mean HD, but HD does mean digital.
•No, you do not have to subscribe to cable or satellite to get digital/HD broadcasts. Chances are, most if not all of your local stations are broadcasting in digital, if not HD.
•There is no such thing as a digital/HD specific antenna
•No, you do not need to get a HD TV, you just need something to convert the digital signal to what your set can display
•No, digital cable is not the same, no, the chage over date will not affect you (unless your provider wants to force you into a potentially higher cost tier of service. -- All hardware sucks, all software sucks, some just suck more than others
