About a month ago, I tried to adjust my T-Mobile contract (a few more minutes, for a few less bucks), and it was made clear that if I did, I would be signing up for a new two year contract term.

I dislike mobile phone contracts in general, but as long as it's made clear you're getting a new contract term, this tactic seems completely fair and sensible.
