| [Need] Format drive to make data unrecoverable
So I'm selling one of my HDD to a stranger and I want to format it so the data is NOT recoverable. Could you recommend me any free software to do this? How long does the process take for a 200GB HDD? Thanks in advance. |

| DBAN wipes drive content nicely. »dban.sourceforge.net/ »bbs.heidi.ie/viewforum.php?f=6
The time it takes to wipe the drive depends on the algorithm you choose and the speed of the drive. |

| reply to Bytezboy I have used Dban and it works well and will completely wipe the drive with a series of overwrites. No data will be recoverable when it is done. The version I used installed on a floppy and ran from that. A windows program that will do similar is Eraser. Gets mentioned on here from time to time, sorry don't have a URL handy at the moment.

The time it takes will depend on the wipe level you choose and the speed of your machine as Graycode already pointed out. -- The pussification of America continues unabated. |

Might as well do nothing as Windows will reveal enough on it's own when you know where to look. -- Whats the point of owning a supercar if you cant scare yourself stupid from time to time? |

| reply to Bytezboy Another vote for Darik's Boot and Nuke. Download the ISO and make a bootable CD. disconnect any drives you don't want wiped. Boot with the CD and type in AUTONUKE at the prompt. For 200GB you're probably looking at about six hours. You don't want to do this from inside of Windows if you want to be sure that everything is wiped. -- How hard does DRM have to bite before business abandon it? |

| Another vote for Dban. And this doesn't need to take six hours. Unless you are into child pornography, or a member of an al-Qaeda sleeper cell, then a single pass writing zeros to the drive should be sufficient. And a single pass writing zeros to a 200 gig hard drive on a modern computer should take less than one hour. |
