1 edit | reply to matcarl Does anyone hear shades of "net neutrality"? They are promising low latency for gamers, but only if it's processed by the STB. Will they give priority to Verizon customers?
All those applications on the STB are eating away memory. Look for stuttering problems to go exponential.
I can play asteroids for free as a flash application just fine on my own thank you very much Verizon for charging me and messing up my STB. |

| reply to matcarl While I'd also like more HD and the like, I guess I don't understand the hostility here. Clearly there's a market for gaming via TV service. Other services have it - so there is definitely a market for it. Would I play them? No. But I have no desire for karaoke through my tv service either. These games are probably very simple, using very little bandwidth or memory. I think it's a mistake to say that because they're focusing on adding games that they're doing so at the expense of other services. It's probably not an either/or type of situation - where they do one or the other. There's nothing to indicate that they're not adding HD because they're focusing too much attention on this type of addition.
Realize also that these games are provided by a third party. It's not like Verizon is expending alot of resources to add games. |

| Unfortunately, no matter how big a company is, there are limits to resources and there is no way for outsiders to know whether they are stretched thin or not. I do not think it would be out of the realm of reality to think that the same resources dedicated to games could be better used in deploying more HD for their fledgling television service...especially when their competitors are turning up the heat. |

I do not think it would be out of the realm of reality to think that the same resources dedicated to games could be better used in deploying more HD for their fledgling television service...especially when their competitors are turning up the heat. Look, this thread is almost a duplicate of one I saw on a directv forum a year ago. Back then folks on that thread said the exact same stuff. Their DVRs (both the SD and HD models) really sucked - they had problems out the wazoo... and they have very limited, very sucky HD offerings. And what was directv in the process of doing at that time (which they have yet to complete, btw)? Rolling out access to a videogame service via their TV service (Gamelounge). I heard the exact same arguments - why are they wasting their time on this nonsense when the should be worrying about adding HD, and fixing their hardware! I don't think I have to spell out how that turned out...
I posted the exact same responses in that thread, too - these are very simple games taking very little bandwidth or memory. There is clearly a market for them, which is why they're adding them. The only other argument I used back then that I haven't so far on this thread - that it brings in additional revenue for the company. That's a GOOD thing. It helps to keep prices lower for everyone else. |

While I'd agree that it's not an HD vs Games argument. My argument is that they can't even get there STB's to work right but they're working on something additional to add to them? Try and get some working hardware first and then add all the useless bells and whistles that you like. Until then I'd like to know that they're concentrating on something a little more important.h |

Things aren't also so black and white and mutually exclusive. Where I work, I have lots of concurrent projects, sometimes using shared resources between 1 or more projects and sometimes there's no overlap at all.
As another poster mentioned, games on a STB aren't new. Verizon isn't breaking ground here. Cablevision has had it for a couple years on their STBs (SA vs Motorola) and though I never had any interest in it, I think it was well received. Cablevision also offers/offered classifieds for autos and homes interactively on the STBs. And all the CV haters said the same thing folks here are chanting.
There's obviously a market and I guess Verizon is in the business of making money and expanding their market where it will result in increased revenue. I've been hearing about "convergence" around the TV for 15 years now. Companies are trying to see what makes sense vs the hype. I don't think adding games impacts any of the other items discussed in the thread. -- Tweaked your connection? | Mail Parse | Speed Converter |

| reply to matcarl I want Fios TV for watching TV shows. I can see once Fios TV has been established for years, has 50 or so HD channels, HD VOD, sports packages, plug in USB HD's for more space and all the bugs are worked out THEN I can see things like this being added. I have zero use for this but I can see how maybe the younger people or people with kids might find a use for it.
A little off topic but I was watching a show about the future and TV and it was saying there would no longer be commercials like we have now, everything is going to be an overlay or pop up on the screen during the shows. They would only be a few seconds and you might even be able to customize the TV screen like you can with a PC. You can have a weather pop up or stock scroll, stuff like that. They say this is what people want, clutter all over the screen. |

I have zero use for this but I can see how maybe the younger people or people with kids might find a use for it. So, they should give up market share in a profitable market because they aren't the perfect TV service yet? Or because they don't have the experience of other services? Forgive this, but huh? How in the world does that make sense? If all companies did that you would never have new players in any market space. As Geek said, this isn't new technology. It's been around, and Verizon isn't the one administering it. Others have it, and even though most on this forum would never use it, it is a draw for customers.
I see this as a good ROI opportunity. Huge gain? No, but I think the investment is very small - you get a relatively large gain for for little investment. The company makes extra money, which keeps costs lower overall. The company also attracts other customers, helping to make it profitable. Not sure why this is a bad thing. Unless someone can demonstrate that this is taking away resources from offering HD, I just don't get the arguments. |
