| Question about slow speeds...
I have been having really wishy washy connection speeds ever since we moved to this new house about feb this year, and never really found any place to ask this until now. First foray with DSL and its aweful, I assume my father is getting the cheapest one you can (1.5mbs?)which is not what i'm complaining about, but rather like clockwork at least once a day my connection gets about as bad or worse then a 56k for hours on end (i'm assuming, havent had 56k in forever and when I did I had no notion of ping or any of htis stuff..). I dont know a whole lot about the "internet" industry (cant think of the word... I see yall mention DSLAM, I have no idea what that is, etc.) but I know my way around computers. Anyway I average about 100 - 180 kbps on downloads and ping about 80 - 120 when its running good, but whenever it starts to slow down it'll usually peak at 15 - 20 kbps downloads but averages about 1 - 5 kbps and the ping... is just aweful, i've seen 20,000.
At first I thought maybe it was like cable and it was b/c to many people were on, as it usually occured during peak hours, but then I talked to a friend sort of in the industry and he said it shoudn't be affected like that like cable is, at least not to that extent. But now it does it completely random times, i've seen it start at like 1am and 12pm and it can last for a few minutes or go on for hours. Anyone have any idea what the problem might be and/or how to fix it? |

| Run a speed test via speedtest.net, dslreports.com or testmy.net and post the results here. In addition, when it is slow, open up command prompt and do a tracert to google.com or some other website that you frequently visit.
Now with a tracert, toy make it easy, just do: start - run - command - type in this: tracert google.com > C:\trace.txt
Once the trace has finished, go to C:\ via My Computer, open the file named trace.txt than copy/paste the trace into the post here.
Also, you should run a check on your DSL box if it isn't bridged for ATTN rates and such. Take a good read at this: »/faq/sfc/11._T···ng#13728 [Not really worth retyping something that is already done!] |

Thats when its bad, althought it's peaking at the bad "state", i usually see it a lot worse.

1 edit | reply to Scarecrow what modem do you have? if it is the 660r: telnet 192.168.2.1 password 1234 option 24 option 1 on this screen you will see the physical link speeds to the dslam. if you are paying for 1.5 you will see the down rate of 1760 with the up being 576 if these are not your speeds then there are problems elsewhere it could be a bad modem or 2wire gateway, a bad port, or a defective splitter or filter installed. if you went with or have dish or direct tv make sure those boxes have filters on them also. if you have an alarm system you need to make sure there is a splitter installed in your nid outside. if they sent you filters and you do have one (alarm sys) call and request a splitter. Also if you find your sunc rates off request to have a tech verify sync at nid(box outside) if it dosen't pass his test then he will know where to check.

| I do infact seem to have a 660r... also have a 1.5 apparently, says upstream speed is 572 and downstream speed is 1756, I geuss thats what your talking about?
If it is then I geuss the routers not at fault? But we do have dish and an alarm as well... |

Althought I geuss I should check when its bad... seems like its not terrible ATM... While this sounds odd, does all the phone lines in your house have filters on them? In addition, if so, if someone is using the phone, does the speed greatly degrade? |

| Filters are normal Phone line / DSL separators. »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DSL_filter --> »upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/e···lter.jpg
If your filters are not in the house, than the DSL line might be a single line to the phone box outside of your house. |

Traditionally yes, you're correct... however I like you have the same issue with Embarq that I've been trying out here for a week.
The CO didn't list DSL-capable but Embarq setup this (short) long-haul solution to get DSL to my neighborhood. Using tracert I noted the latency was NOT due to my first hop but rather to the 2nd hop (which should be the meet-me point for connecting to fat pipes/peer networks or at the very least well-connected, correctly provisioned routers. +++EDIT/NOTE: When I say first hop I mean first hop off-network (really talking about 2nd and 3rd hops as I use a router and that is always 0ms when I test to anything ping/tracert). You want to look for your first hop that is not 192.168.etc. +++
If your first hop is always steady and the 2nd hop or later (still on-network, not AT&T or Level3, etc.) is latent that node/router (whatever it is) is likely getting pounded and is the capacity choke point. NO CLUE why they would not beef this up to account for forcasted traffic during busy hours but it appears to be a common theme that Embarq runs too lean on this hop/area of their network administration. |
