See, DSL works on frequencies on the voice line that the human voice doesn't use. Filters prevent any harmonics from encroaching on the DSL bandwidth.

I'm glad AT&T provides these filters for free, as they're somewhat expensive if you try to go to Radioshack and purchase them.
