It's finally got to the point where I can't take it anymore

And one last time before the Westell 6100 saves the day.
and I'm just going to have to break down and do it, call tech support that is.

I have been having problems with my connection for about a year and a half, when it first started it was a very infrequent loss of sync and I would just wait for a few seconds and it would pass. It would happen maybe a few times ever couple of months then it became ever couple of weeks. I didn't think it was a big deal, because believe it or not I don't live on the Internet. Later it got worse like a couple of times a week, but I just hated to have to call tech support.

Within the last six months it has become a 4 or 5 times a day, then 7 or 9 times a day, now it's 40 times a day, but sometimes it is OK for a day or two.

It has been up all day today but the downstream SN Margin has been floating between 1 and 17.50 and right before I posted this it has been caught between 1 and 6 and can't make up it's mind if it wants re-sync or not, so I had to force a restart.

I have swapped modems, tested at the NID and none of it has been of any help.

I have decided that this last loss of sync is the straw that broke the camels back and first thing Monday I am going to call tech support and hope that I can convince them that I have a real problem and that I need someone to come and check out my line and card at the DSLAM. Most likely my connection will be having one of it's good days and I will be cleaning out my cookies and reinstalling Windows and they probably will want to send me a new modem. Come to think of it I do need a Netopia 2241N-006 for my collection or maybe they will want to send me one of the new model AT&T Southeast Netopia 2210-02 modems that are going to be coming out for the AT&T Southeast customers.

This thing has lost sync four times while I was typing this. It time to get out the trusty Westell 6100, it losses sync too, but not anywhere near as much.

Edit: I had a spot for two more pictures so I put them in before I switch over to the Westell 6100.

I had a similar problem a few months back, lots of sync loss, CRC errors, etc. Got to the point where I got tired of it and got a tech to come out. Sure enough my line had some issues he was able to fix, he also cleaned up some wiring inside the house itself that may have been causing more noise on the line. I'm sure a tech can spot the problem for you once he starts listening to the lines himself.

Your Westell stats look just like mine does, it must be an issue that comes and goes because those stats in the latest screenshot should ensure proper service.

Your stats don't look too well on the Netopia(1db SNR)
but on the westell they look fantastic.

7db atten, 12db SNR, you should be well off with those.

Do you have a home run installed?

Yeah, as long as they will stay that way it will work fine, but the problem is it won't stay that way for long. Since I swapped in the Westell 6100 for the Netopia 3347NWG last night the Westell has been up for twelve hours before it lost sync, but my problems seem to happen more during the day and seldom occur at night.

The Westell or the Netopia will normally have a downstream SN Margin of between 15.5 to 17.5 when I have a couple of days or a week of no problems. My upstream SR Margin or my line attenuation numbers will normally not vary by more then +/- 1 whether or not I'm having a good day or a bad day.

My Westell 6100 will cut through the noise way better than my Netopia 3347NWG will on the bad days, but it to will have problems on the worst days.

------------------------------------------------------------

This is the Westell's log since I swapped it last night, it was up for twelve hours until I got up this morning and went to BroandBand Reports and it lost sync after about 15 minutes.

Please refer to Log 1.

------------------------------------------------------------

This is what the Westell logs look like when even it can't cut through the noise.

Please refer to Log 2.

Hopefully when I call tech support Monday my line will be having problems and they will be able to send a tech out.

I live in a small town where everybody knows everybody and I know most all the techs that work in my town and they are good fellows. I know if tech support sends one of these guys out that he will try his hardest to fix up my problem. I thought about going down to the restaurant and eating some breakfast or maybe lunch and asking one of them if they could look into it for me, but something like this needs to go through the proper channels.

When I'm having problems with my line my downstream SR Margin number is between 10.5 to 12.5 on either modem.

When I moved into my house I bought a Siecor NID and a Siecor external ADSL/POTS splitter. I ran conduit from the telephone pole to the NID and from the NID to the splitter and from the splitter to my punch-down block in a closet where I put all of my networking equipment. I used American made CAT5E cable and ran one for POTS to a punch-down block and one for ADSL to a dedicated ADSL jack.

Later on today I'm going to forward my home phone calls to my cell phone and I'm going to run a twisted pair phone cable out of a window to my modem and an ethernet cable to my computer and I'm going to leave it like that until Monday. I have already done this before with no luck, but I'm going to do it again just to be sure.

I have a buddy that lives down the street from me(he is further away from the CO than I am)and he had a problem with his DSL too, but I checked it and it was a inside wiring problem. We replaced all of the old wiring and jacks and installed a home-run. I took his old Westell 2200 and gave him a new Westell 6100 and a new ADSL/POTS splitter like mine. He has Xtreme 6.0 like me and his downstream SR Margin is now in the low twenties and I have swapped my Netopia with him before for a couple of days and it too had a downstream SN Margin in the low twenties and ran perfect the whole time it was there.

This is the best my Netopia has ever been on my line when ever thing is good, but it is normally 15.5 to 17.5 when everything is good.

The Westell ···azy..txt 11,742 bytes
The Westell went crazy.
Well it took it long enough but it finally went crazy with the Westell 6100 connected, if it would have been the Netopia 3347NWG it would have lost sync about 50 times by now.

Trouble is outside...most likely a bad dslam port but a good MLT test can tell if there is physical problem on line ie; shorts, grounds, hight opens, unbalances or cross battery. Tell India to roll a truck or you will go to your local cable provider for broadband. End of discussion...you will have a tech there asap.
