damoncarr : This is a good point as I have been tweaking away at many settings.

For example, I have found that the QoS settings on my Linksys (with DD-WRT) can have a major impact, but in very non-intuitive ways (although now I get it).

OpenWRT builds as well as the other variants should work as well I believe if they have a solid QoS implementation.

I have only ever used DD-WRT (and only for torrents used V24 RC5) which I have added a large SAMBA share to, as well as tweaked some settings).

Basically here is what I did to get 900KB+ download speed (for the best torrents anyway).

1) Added the ports used for bittorrent (I would manually do this at the port level, so as not to use any higher level sniffer). Also, I recommend choosing new ports.

2) Ensure they are set to 'bulk' the lowest QoS ranking (I think this has to do with reducing latency over increasing overall performance, which seems to be a key determinant).

3) As for download, try the normal 80% of what is measured using the standard tests here.

4) Make sure you have a monitoring tool in your bittorrent client which allows you to see the upload and download performance. The trick is to tweak these settings until your QoS is capping the upload speed (this can be quite low actually, which is fine. We are trying to optimize download here. For seeding, a similar approach can be used).

5) Once you have a straight consistent stream for uploads (assume 10K) which does not waiver, you are setup to unleash the download side (NOTE: this all works for me, and sorry I have no idea if it is a general approach. I have roadrunner cable in NYC, 9000KBit up and 450 Kbit down).

6) If you are using Windows XP SP2 you will almost certainly have to modify the tcpip.sys driver to hack the 10 'half' connection limit. This was done for viruses and to keep them from spreading. However it really screws you on downloads.

Here is a reliable (DO AT YOUR OWN RISK HOWEVER!) utility to do this for you:

This has been widely used, and in spite of incorrect virus reporting, it appears to be harmless.

7) Ensure you have enough connections per torrent download. I recommend 99 connections per torrent with a global max of perhaps 99 (so you are focusing downloads 1 at a time).

This also means of course you only allow 1 torrent download to ever be active at once.

I also use BitTyrant which has tweaks to favor the downloader. It's controversial, but so is the entire concept of enticements as they currently exist in the protocol.

If interested I can send some interesting studies that go way deeper on this.

REMEMBER: You are only really ever as fast as your torrent is healthy.

HINT: While testing find the best tracker you possibly can to eliminate this variable. Always use the same one for your tweaks.

This could go on and on. The topic is deep and fun (to me at least).

Also, there are many XP registry tweaks to consider, but I have probably said enough for now and if there is interest (or a seperate area for 'torrent performance') that might be more relevant.

Thanks,
Damon Carr, CTO
agilefactor
professional software engineer
part-time hack

1) Played with DECREASING my QoS for Downloads

anon : Apologies in advance if this is the wrong forum for this..

ISPs are rated by their speed and service. Current speed tests supported by BroadbandReports make the speed metric accessible to consumers like me when shopping. I suggest a "peer-to-peer speed test" metric, if it became popular, might influence ISPs with respect to product offerings.

...assuming it's possible to overcome the port configuration hurdle.

BroadbandReports' speed tests service has huge effect in most markets around the world! Big thanks for all the hard work you guys have done in making this place great!!
