| Some relevant passages about the proposed law
would let a secret court issue one-year "umbrella" warrants to allow the government to intercept e-mails and phone calls of foreign targets and would not require that surveillance of each person be approved individually.
The bill would require the Justice Department inspector general to audit the use of the umbrella warrant and issue quarterly reports to a special FISA court and to Congress, according to congressional aides involved in drafting the legislation.
It would clarify that no court order is required for intercepting communications between people overseas that are routed through the United States.
It would specify that the collections of e-mails and phone calls could come only from communications service providers -- as opposed to hospitals, libraries or advocacy groups.
And it would require a court order when the government is seeking communications of a person inside the United States, but only if that person is the target. A target is defined as a person, group, cell or government of interest to a foreign intelligence investigation. This isn't very much different than current practice. The umbrella provision can be used to wiretap almost anyone communicating with what will be a large number of FISA court preapproved groups for up to a year. -- -- Internet News My BLOG My Web Page |

| Yes, and it will fail. Democrats are just doing this, wasting taxpayers money in the process, in hopes it will help with votes for them in 2008. It won't pass the Senate since Democrats don't have 60 votes to override a veto.
If you're not a terrorist or terrorist supporter, who cares? There has not been one single case of wiretapping an American that has nothing to do with terrorism so what is the big deal?
Never heard encypting you HD was illegal either. This has been going on since FISA came into existence (the 70s if not mistaken) so what is the big deal now? There has not been one single case of wiretapping an American that has nothing to do with terrorism so what is the big deal? Really? Any since there's been zero oversight, just how would you know that? It's happened in the past when it was totally illegal, and now that it is quasi-legal who's to say it's not happening again?
What about the allegations of whistle-blowers like Russell Tice?
I'd say there's been plenty of broad, wide wiretapping and monitoring of Americans who had nothing to do with terrorism. -- "Regulatory capitalism is when companies invest in lawyers, lobbyists, and politicians, instead of plant, people, and customer service." - former FCC Chairman William Kennard (A real FCC Chairman, unlike the current Corporate Spokesperson in the job!) |

No but it's funny you pic the part that this administration worries about more than foreign terrorists. How does it go... protect what we have first, protect what our friends have second, and see what we can do for the country third? I think someone watched to many television shows in the 80's based on Texans.
Great ideas or other little bits that can lead to making money aren't very safe when discussed over an insecure communications method when the people listening are in it for the money first. |

Since you're the one who brought it up, just what evidence do you have to offer that he didn't use the NSA to his own advantage there? |
