Printing issuesI'm trying to figure out what the app is that gives the following print dialog box. It seems that in Eye of Gnome/Evolution or whatever app uses this type of box, the print option is always greyed out. I can print to the printer just fine from Firefox or Openoffice. |

Looks like gnome printing isn't working for some reason. What happens if you launch?
gnome-cups-manager
from a terminal. Are the printers listed and do their properties look OK (right click on the icons) |

Yes, all seems normal from there.
I actually didn't have that app installed, as Gutsy has replaced it, but I was seeing the problem in Feisty as well. Seems to have started after I added PDF printing, which I removed and readded PDF printing with the native PDF printing in Gutsy. |

You could try deleting and reinstalling all your printers. Gutsy makes that easier because it has plug and play printing (at least for hp printers). I switched off my photosmart printer and switched it back on and it was perfectly configured without any intervention on my part. |

I'm seeing the same problem in Fedora 7. I did notice that if you select a particular printer within this dialog, then close it, then use the print shortcut icon (the printer picture on the toolbar in OpenOffice Word), it DOES print to the selected printer. It doesn't work in applications that don't have a print shortcut icon, like the PDF viewer. |

I have tried reinstalling all the printers, with no luck. Not sure what is going on. What I did notice is that I had two entries for the printer. Seems like one is auto installed, and the other one was added after I selected which driver to install.
At any rate, with either both or just one, nothing works. :S
If I could figure out what the printing app is, then I could at least file a bug report or see if there's anything filed. |

Have a look in the log files here:
/var/log/cups
error_log often has useful stuff for figuring out problems |

Some of those error messages are in this Ubuntu bug » edge.launchpad.net/ubunt ··· ug/42802The suggestion is that it is caused by a misconfigured cups system and you might try reinstalling the cupsys package (use synaptic) so that all config files get reset. |
|
| |
No luck with that. I just did the reinstall option, should I perhaps do a force remove and then reinstall? |

Did you mark for *complete* removal before reinstalling? This deletes all the configuration files as well. You may want to check out that bug report in detail as well. I only googled it and looked at it quickly. |

No luck with that either.
I have noticed that I get a 403 error trying to connect to localhost:631, that seems a bit odd, no? |

Well, I tried my laptop which has a fresh install of 7.10 on it. Surprise, surprise, I plugged it in and it installed automatically to work perfectly.
Meanwhile, my desktop was formatted for 7.04 and is running 7.10 now, but it did not install the printer automatically.
It seems that something with CUPS is messed up as I can't even access the web interface. I hope it can be fixed without a format. |

Sure sounds like it. I am running Feisty here and can access » localhost:631/ without a problem. As a desperation measure (before reformatting) you could open synaptic search on cups and completely reinstall all the packages you have installed (I have about 14). Any cups experts out there? Edit: I have attached my cups config file (/etc/cups/cupsd.conf) you might want to crosscheck it with yours.... |

Man, thanks so much for posting that! Under # All administration operations require an administrator to authenticate... I changed AuthType to Basic from Default. Everything is well now! |
