.Mac mail

I don't understand what .Mac mail is all about. I have a DSL connection and use gmail, but whenever a web site asks if I want to "contact someone," I always get directed to .Mac Mail. Can I change that to gmail? It looks like this is an account that I have to sign up and pay for. Thanks,CZ

It's not necessarily ".Mac Mail". It's the Apple Mail client. You can use it with any e-mail account (for the most part). You can set it up to get your gmail mail in there so you won't have to go to the gmail website to send/receive mail if you'd like.

Is this a service that I have to purchase? Could I still access my mail the old way, through Google? I just hate having to open my mail account separately if I don't have to when I want to respond to a site.

No, you don't have to purchase anything because Gmail allows you to have free POP access. All you have to do is configure Apple Mail for your Gmail, but make sure you set it to keep everything on the server otherwise your webmail will go empty. Apple Mail is free email client software, so you can think of it like Outlook Express, except way better

Open the Mail app, go to Mail menu item and then select Preferences.
Once in there, select General....then drop the Default E-mail Reader. Point it to whatever you want. If you have GMail Notifier installed, it will open that which actually opens GMail in your default browser.
