Re: OK let's get this going

In the next few weeks our installers will be working around your house making preparations to shorten the installation process. This may require burying a new cable line to the side of your home. When this work is complete, our representatives will begin contacting customers on a street-by-street basis to review our services and let you choose what package fits your needs. At that time, they will schedule an appointment for our technicians to connect your home to the new system.
New cable? What would they need a new cable for unless they are installing a direct fiber optic line? I have not heard of Armstrong doing this.

Some of the great new products our customers will be able to receive are:

Zoom Internet is a constant connection to the Internet with no phone lines, busy signals, or waiting to log on. With speeds up to 80 times faster than dial-up and four times as fast as standard DSL.

Armstrong Telephone service offers our customers unlimited local and long distance calling. Great calling features at no additional charge, one easy to read bill and professional installation.

Television Plus 50 has over 150 channels including 48 music channels, Video On Demand, High Definition programming, Interactive TV Guide, and more. Every channel on Television Plus is 100% digital picture quality.

Armstrong PVR allows you to record all your favorite shows, even in high definition. With the ability to pause live TV, or rewind for an instant replay, this is a whole new way to watch television.

Armstrong HD is your clear choice for high definition programming. We offer all your favorite channels and the most cost-effective HD solution for your home.
I am not sure how many channels TV Plus has now, but what is actually new in that list? They already have a TV Plus with more channels. They already have Armstrong HD with HD offerings, they already have Internet at 80x dialup (~ 5mb/s) and they already offer Armstrong Telephone. What is new?

I have not gotten any info on this. Please let me know what kind of cable they actually hook up to your house. If it's fiber optic it will be great, either wise that is just a crackpot letter to get you to sign up for something else.

Jim,
It's all new fiber optics. I've been watching them do this since the end of February. They aren't using any of the old analog cable. So, for those who still have the old cable service that runs out here, hell everything is going to be new. They're completely dismissing the old analog cable here. It's all "black" wiring, no "grey wiring". The current drops going into homes for service are the old ones, they will need replaced.

I got that directly from: »cable.agoc.com/rebuild.aspx

The cable isn't the same as what they have in places like Boardman, Campbell, and Poland, it's all new cabling, they're not utilizing any of the old stuff.

Thanks for the info. Hope they get that done here to. I figured they would go to DOCSIS3 before straight fiber. Maybe they are testing in your location cause it does not appear to be a massive roll-out right now.

EDIT: It is still sad that they don't appear to be offering an new ground-breaking services with the rollout.

We'll have the capabilities of DOCSIS 3.0 but I don't think we'll get it just yet. People in this township have never, ever had broadband before, they're all use to dial-up, with the exception of the few of us who qualify for basic DSL (Up to 768kbps, most capped at 384kbps). I wouldn't expect a new cable system built today to be built the same way they were 10-15 years ago when they started upgrading their systems to carry Zoom and such, I'd expect better.

Well I called just to get some information this past Saturday, looks like they'll probably start taking install orders in a couple of weeks. They've wasted no time with this. Pure fiber optics from pole to pole throughout the township, props to them. Just hope everything goes smoothly when the service is ready.

Well it's been weeks now. No more trucks, fiber is just kind of hanging up there and chillin'. Haven't heard anything nor gotten anything in the mail.

Well first off thanks for keeping it updated.
I had no idea it took them this long to roll out.

But is this what it looks like they're putting up on the poles?

That is the only kind I've seen them use around here, like a stainless wrapped line, and I don't think it's fiber.

Nope, that's not it. That is good old coax cable. I'll bet there's fiber to the node then the regular coax like that running up and down streets there. I'll get pictures with my digital camera tomorrow and post them.

Here's the picture. It's the black fiber cable on top. You can see they moved the old coax line down by the phone cable. That's what it looks like all throughout the township, but no word on service.

Is the old line still up for service till it's done?

I've seen cables with that orange marker before but I don't think it is very often around here. I thought it was just copper for POTS line.
I guess they don't have nearly as many of those repeater boxes on that fiber line?

Back around 8 or 9 years I believe they rewired the whole town for a year or two and I thought that new cable was actually fiber since it looks better protected than the old coax.
Even areas in the last 3-4 years that were just wired, and not rewired have the same coax.

During the township meeting in October when this whole thing first started, they had mentioned that the system was left in ruins and wasn't maintained and they'll need to rebuild it completely. You're right it does look like POTS, especially the one that runs down this road, I took that picture from my driveway. The old coax is in service until they're ready to change over.

How far are those repeater boxes spaced out there?

Even if we really have only coax, they still seem to do a good job and are more community friendly compared to others.

I haven't seen them put any new repeaters in yet. The only things I see are amplifiers on the new fiber lines that I posted. Looks like they're doing the roll-out township by township and not all at one time, and obviously we're not first on the list. I haven't seen them out for nearly 3 weeks and for a while it was every day.

Well saw two regular Armstrong Vans out and 2 more with the construction van, it looks like they're going up and down the township putting the drops going into homes onto the new system. I suspect I'm looking at a matter of weeks.

Well, still no service yet. They began putting drops on some of the homes that already have cable but they weren't turned over just yet. I spoke with a sales girl a little over a week ago, and she said they're going to be offering service by sections. Seeing that this "section" of the township has drops in place and I haven't seen any elsewhere throughout, I'll assume I'm in the first "section". The drops are also fiber optic and not coax, thus that is why they're replacing all of the current ones. I'm not even sure this could be called "cable", should be considered "fiber optics".
