OK let's get this going

Any Armstrong users here? I'd like to try and get a decent forum going before I become a full Armstrong user over the next several months.

@zoominternet.net

I've had Armstrong for over 2 years now in the southern ohio northern kentucky area and have nothing but GREAT things to say about it. They are THE BEST cable I have EVER had.

And I have the triple pack tv,net, phone and all are rock solid .

Thier phone service is awesome compared to any other voip services ive had the misfortune of listening to.

And thier costomer service is TOP NOTCH!!! at least the couple times ive ever had to call them LoL

I can honestly say im in love with them ... if i ever have to move my MAIN concern will be if they provide cable in that area.

Hope you like them as well as i do ... consider yourself lucky to be getting them.

Well we had a township meeting about it on Wednesday. Looks like it's still going to be a while. The letter written to the Township describes our current cable system as an old car that's been sitting for 20 years with no maintenance. The cabling continues to break and is about worthless. They have to rebuild this entire cable system. It could take as long 18 months but they hope to have it finished over the next year.

Apparently stupid ass Rapid Cable didn't "map out" this township so Armstrong has to do that in order to build this "new state of the art system". Other areas they bought around here that were operated by Rapid are only going to take 6-8 months to upgrade, the blueprints are already mapped. Ours somehow wasn't given to Armstrong.

But we have BEEN PROMISED the best, top notch cable system, in the entire country once Armstrong works their magic. Everything will be brand new and even better than what their current customer's already have. Since they know what to do and what not to do with the newer systems they "build".

At least that's where it stands. But they've been out here working to get our current system to a point where it could sustain itself until the new system is built, which from what we've been told the system now is on the verge of collapse. We've had 4 other cable names before Armstrong and Armstrong is the only company that I've seen trucks out here since I moved here in 1999.

I will say I'm a little disappointed to hear of the delay and so where the others that attended the meeting, but I guess it's to be expected because it would be impossible for them to build under the conditions and with no blueprints.

Hi, used to be an Armstrong customer back around 00, but dropped it when it looked like they were overloading their network. I used to get sub-dialup speeds back then. I switched to AT&T (then Ameritech then SBC) DSL for a while, but now that speeds are starting to increase I switched back to Armstrong this year since they offer an 8mb/s tier verses AT&T's 6mb/s (and they seem very unwilling to increase it in the near future).

Armstrong has a 8mbps package? I thought it went 256k, then up to 5mbps, then their "pro" package at 10mbps?

Yes, technically it is 10, but I say 8... actually 7 because of TCP limitations. That's for one connection though. Multiple concurrent connections can, theoretically, go up to 10 but I have not seen more than 6 and thats on a fast server with multiple connections.

I just got on Armstrong with the 10 meg deal. I'm coming from the RoadRunner 15 meg deal, so I don't mind paying, but I have a little issue with Armstrong internet between 6pm and 11pm every night it seems. I know these are peak times, but it goes down MUCH lower than what road runner did. But the thing is if I use a download manager I get averages of 12 meg when it's all said and done, but regular browsing and ping times for online games are almost unplayable. I need to run more tests during the peak time, but if it's them, you would think others would have the issue..

You had Timewarner? Now did you move or did Armstrong purchase your cable system?

The thing to keep in mind for those that have service from a previous company that was taken over by Armstrong. They didn't build the system, therefore it's not yet to their standards.

I moved to a Armstrong area. It's about 10 minutes away from the Time Warner area, and I couldn't go with them. I'm still running a lot of tests so when I call them I can tell them what's going on and at what point in the network.

Well I think I may know what your problem is. I had just gotten armstrong a few months ago and it was awsome but then I discovered that they unfairly block almost every port that the computer uses to listen for connection and when that happens your games lag down. And I know for a fact comcast doesn't block the ports, nor access to the modem/router/gateway either. It sucks I'm not in a comcast or verison area but ohwell, thems the breaks. Other than that tough they are pretty good. Also ports 7777 are open and maybe 57963 seem to be open( I get good speeds with those on bitcomet) but there might be more, try calling them.Peace Out and Goood Luck.

I have never had an issue with ports. They all seem open on my end. Scans confirm it. As far as I can tell they don't block any ports (except maybe 25 {email}).

Yeah, m9i9k9e99, apparently you don't know what you're doing. I have no ports blocked at all. I have a (shhh) web server on my end and put up an FTP server as needed. I also RDP into my home multiple times a day. I also frequently run bittorrent. I'd say, from the sounds of it, you don't know how to port forward from a router.

I've been very happy with Armstrong. I've been a customer for six years and have only ever had two outages related to network equipment failures and they were very short in duration. I randomly do speed tests and I've always had nearly the full advertised speed.

The only problem I had with them was about 6 months ago. They were changing some of their internal DNS assignments and needed to contact people with static IP addresses (I do not have one.) They had an automated calling system that was supposed to contact all of those customers. For some reason it was calling me and hanging up. This was happening 10-15 times a day. The only way I knew it was them was their caller-ID. It took a half-dozen calls to them before someone figured out how to get it to stop. They finally black-listed my home phone number in their calling system. They couldn't figure out why it was calling me in the first place. It was a very frustrating period but I haven't had a problem since.

I would use Armstrong for limited cable service if they offered a "lifeline" package of local network affiliates but they don't. They force you into a full analog package or nothing at all.

Actually I do know what I'm doing. The thing is that I can't access the gateway we were given (which is a netgear CG814WG v2). The thing's a dinosaur, it requires the firmware of the company that supplies it (armstrongs) for it to function on their network. So far the only way to access the thing is to reset and clear their firmware out it but even then it has no port forwarding and it won't connect to the net until it re updates again. I guess you were lucky enough to get a different gateway than what we got although they did say to access it they would charge us $200 a month. Complete bs if you ask me. But you might have the phone servcice which might make a difference somehow.

Hmm... still sounds odd. I got the phone service along with the internet so they gave us the RCA Gateway (cable modem / VoIP integrated). It has no firewall. Most regular gateways do not have firewalls. Of course, right after the RCA I have my Netgear RP614 router which does, but I can access both. The RCA has a web interface too but all it does is show you connection statistics. It has no firewall.

Ok... just looked up the CG814WG. It looks very similar to my router. It is definietly an older model though. I would worry more about the ARM processor not stacking up than anything else. You should be able to get to the web interface through 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. There you should be able to change firewall settings. If you haven't set a password, default is usually
USERNAME: admin
PASSWORD: password

If Armstrong set the password you can usually reset it by using a pencil or paper-clip to click the reset button in the back. Hold it in for 30 seconds and it should reset everything to factory default.

Well just to update on Friday I saw 2 Armstrong pick-up trucks riding about the township and what appeared to be 2 large trucks with an Armstrong logo and some wiring spools.

Things are getting interesting.

Well, I already did the stuff mentioned. I did reset but the thing won't link with the internet. A little "I" near the power indicator blinks constantly until it resets after updating itself with armstrongs own firmware. It maybe that you need a different gateway to support the phone service and ports since all we have is digital cable and internet but that's just my guess. When I did access it though it just had network stats and rate and just an area for setting the wireless, nothing more so I'm also guessing that its firewall is uploaded along with the other files. Either that or Armostrong functions differently where you're at. Thanks for the help though.

Does anybody know how their pricing works? They have displayed on their website the price for each package. But I assume that's with TV service. Anyone know how much it is without TV Service? I'm not real sure I want to drop DirecTV.
