 [Help] Browsers using excessive resources!!

Any browser I try to run on my PC uses ridiculous amounts of system resources! Right now with just 2 tabs open MSIE 7.x is using over 100 MB, I get similar results with OPERA, Firefox, AND SAFARI to the point if I have more than 3 tabs open my PC slows to a halt!

PC has 1 Gig of RAM and is clean installed with Windows XP Pro SP2 evry 2-3 months. I use AVG as anti-virus

Any ideas?

Try IE6. I know it doesn't support tabs, but it takes considerable less memory to run. IE7 has memory and desktop heap leaks.

I have tried IE6, Opera, Netcape, Firefox, and Safari and they all give very similar results!

Perhaps it's the pages you're going to... ? Or does it happen regardless? Do you have a lot of toolbars and other "helpers" installed?

it's not page dependant. No both browwsers are bare with no helpers or additional toolbars.

In my experience, all modern browsers are memory hogs (except "lynx", "wget" and the like).

but the same browsers used on a similar specification computer use a quarter as much resources as on mine....

So what does that say? Seems contradictory, as does the fact that practically every single browser does this on that particular machine.

Same for me, but I never saw it as a big deal, let them use as much as they want.

Mine uses between 60-120MB.. fine with me
You consider 100MB to be a ridiculous amount of memory nowadays?

That is not the cause of your issues.

I would say it has to be the sites you go to. 100MB for a browser is sadly not unusual when you go to plugin heavy (flash, java) or picture heavy sites. I know Opera is tuned to use up to ~330MB on a 1GB system for caching the pages you have open and back forward. I think Firefox is similar, though you can change some settings in about:config.

IE7, I have no idea as I don't use it.

You can have tabs in IE6 easily. Use Maxthon.

Thank you, Mele20 See Profile.

Frankly, I never needed a tab support. Using multiple IE6 windows never made a problem for me. I use "JS Pager" that helps me organize several (actually, 9) desktops with multiple windows on any of them.

I use IE7 not because it has tab support, or, some say, it's more secure then IE6 (it's close to BS, BTW), or it "looks better" (it has less flexible UI support and multiple bugs associated with it), but mainly because it has improved printing (comparing to IE6) and has a bit more HTML standard compliance then IE6 (not all common users see or even care about it, but, for some reason, it's important to me). That's probably it.

Take a look at Avant Browser also.

It is another shell toy for IE like Maxthon.

Don't expect miracles.. RAM usage is ABSOLUTELY necessary when viewing pages with images, those images must be viewed in an uncompressed form, as well as many other page objects... Everything that is displayed is either loaded in the RAM or VRAM.

My Seamonkey is up to about 240 MB; it will eventually lock up my system as it always does.

(Just another victim of the Mozilla memory leaks they swear don't actually exist.)

Anyway, 100 MB for a vital utility like a browser on a 1GB system does not seem outrageous. However, it's the "3 tabs open my PC slows to a halt" that's odd. What else are you running at the same time?

It's always possible you have subtle background malware infection quietly sucking up resources.

Something's not right there.

I duplicated this thread to 5 tabs reloading each one..and even then it used only about 1Mb more resources than the original page.

Only 28Mb.

And this is on a P3-366 with 512 megs of RAM and onboard video..with 4megs of vram.

Now, if I loaded a Flash or Java page..well doh...

I can't imagine newer gear than my ancient stuff having much of a problem though. My Linux box using Opera uses even less resources on it's process.

What sites are you visiting??

I cruise..ahem..photo sites with a few megs of image thumbs alone and have never crashed or even really had slowdowns.

I second the idea that you have other issues going on.
Do you have a router and/or a software firewall?

*edit*
for kicks, I closed the other tabs, left this one open and opened a new tab. Then went to flashkit.com. (94 images plus flash content)

only 40Mb of resources used for those two tabs.

Changed the 2nd tab to YouTube and watched a video...48M usage while playing.

This all while NOD32 is running full-bore with all modules, software firewall, a hosts server, winpatrol, and a screenshot app running.

Hmm.
