There are backbone providers on the "plain old" Internet right now that are using equipment from Cisco and other vendors that can put 80 10Gig wavelengths on one pair of fibers.

And in a year or two, they will be 80 40Gig and 80 100Gig wavelengths.

So I'm not really sure why this is being treated as a big deal for the Internet2, when it's available to companies on the "regular" Internet right now.
