Evolution/T-Bird vs Yahoo

I have several web email accounts scattered across Yahoo, Gmail and Hotmail. I haven't used a dedicated mail client since Yahoo closed off POP access, but I'd be interested if any of the Linux options would allow me access to those three services. It's not worth it to 'buy' access through Yahoo, so if this is the only option then I'll stick to my current method. There's also a little-used Verizon account but I don't think that would be a problem.

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

There are Thunderbird add-ons for accessing Yahoo and other web-mail services.

I use Tbird with gmail and verizon. Both are basically pop servers.

I got to ask, whats the name of the Yahoo add on? I searched the extensions site for yahoo and nothing looking like that came up.

Looks good!!

it's not just an addon thunderbird, so you can use it with any email client.

Thanks for the feedback. On today's agenda is an install of Mandriva Linux 2008, and if that goes well I may play with T-Bird some. It's been so long that I've forgotten just what to add, so I'll probably muck it up and have to come back for more advise. Like, do I just use mail.yahoo.com or something else?

I usually mess it up the first time too. Webmail would not install for me at first, I re downloaded it a few times. Thunderbird was not recognizing it. The directions say to add webmail then the the yahoo extension after restart. Thunderbird wouldnt recognize webmail, so I dragged n dropped the Yahoo extension into Tbird add on, then immediately did the same for webmail. Restarted and have not looked back since.

I myself use a little script, Fetchyahoo. It retrieves the information from Yahoo, send it to my local mail server (postfix), which is then picked up via my local IMAP server (courier-imap). For those accounts that have proper POP3 servers, I use fetchmail (which sends it to my local mail server and is then picked by my IMAP server, just like fetchyahoo).

I decided a while back that email was too important to settle for the free offerings. I used to pay for a Yahoo Plus account. I now pay for a Fastmail account instead, for the IMAP access.

Much better service, and no ads. The price is nothing compared to my dependence on email.
