FixManTx : Actually I didn't mention it but SE's liberal TOS and no blocked ports was one of the things that initially attracted me to them. I run a Ventrillo server on one machine and FTP server on another, and I have had in mind to put some kind of webpage/website online from home someday, which I can do anytime I want with my package. There were some problems moving my service to my new apartment last year and I was "down" for 3 weeks so SE upgraded me to a business package for the same price. So far it looks like the package hasn't changed. I gained some extra IP's, and hosting space and a couple other things over the Home package. Except for the price I can't say I have any complaints with my service from SE.

FixManTx : I sure wish FIOS was available in Houston. I'm paying over $100/mo for 6.0/768 and extra static IP's from Speakeasy. I can't complain about Speakeasy's service, which has been practically trouble-free for 2 1/2 years so far. I'm not wild about going back to cable internet, always had intermittent outages with RoadRunner, and I doubt Comcast has improved things much.
The only option around here for faster service is ADSL2, which Speakeasy is rolling out but it isn't available in my area yet, and is nearly $200/mo for 15mb/3mb service. I can't justify spending that much for personal use.
I could always move 45 miles across town to Humble which is Verizon territory, but that's pretty drastic in my book.

An amicable divorce from SpeakEasy --- SE gets the kid

dldegeo : After 7 years of SE DSL I have finally switched to Verizon FIOS
Business service 20/5. It is nominally the same price as SE 6/.785,
I added extra IP addresses so its more expensive.
The speed difference was the final reason but I have been thinking
about it for a while. In November of 2005 Verizon disconnected my line,
it was a dry pair. I filed a ticket on Wednesday morning but the
SE->COVAD->VZ communications path meant that Verizon didn't get to
it on Thursday, Friday was a holiday, and then there was the weekend. The total effect was a Wed -> Monday outage. SE was my domain's mail backup but they could not figure out how to keep my mail from bouncing during the outage and some did bounce. At this point I began to think about VZ, which I had hated when I was a DSL customer. During this period I also tried SE VOIP which is an outsourced operation and is not very good. Then FIOS sashayed by and I jumped at it. Verizon has been essentially problem free.
SE was very graceful about my cancellation and I left my daughter's dialup with them. I have fond memories of SE in spite of a "DSL is a best effort service" tiff or two, but dealing with COVAD and Verizon just became too much, even though I haven't had an outage in 2 years.
David
