| Stolen E-Mail Address?
My ex, yes we're still friends, appears to have had her e-mail address stolen. She's been getting hundreds of bounce backs from addresses all over the world. She uses Yahoo mail and has already notified them. They're looking into it and will get back to her in a few days. They had her open one. A strange name and her e-mail address. I scanned her computer with several different scanners and they all come up clean. Not even a tracking cookie. She does take good care of her computer. My question, is there anything that could have been done to prevent this and where could her e-mail have been picked up to be used for spamming? nwrickert sand groper Premium,MVM join:2004-09-04 Geneva, IL | It's always hard to know where they get an email address. Some of them come from dictionary attacks, some from the web or usenet, some from mailing lists, some from address books on computers that they have broken into. |

I guess her e-mail was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. From what you say, it doesn't sound like there's any foolproof way to safeguard an e-mail address. It's unfortunate it has to be this way. Thanks again, Dan -- I'm an Einstoner and crunch for BBR Team Starfire Einstein @ Home! Join Us! VoicePulse 07/29/04 |

| reply to danny9 To me it sounds not like a hijacked or stolen e-mail address but rather spoofing (correct me if I'm wrong). If you're sure that's it's not spoofing, then Yahoo would have to deal with it.
If it's just spoofing, (i.e. a spammer sending from her e-mail address or making it appear so), Yahoo can't do much about it and you'll have to let the spammer run their course and move on to another e-mail address to spoof. -- Submit phishing to phishtracker HostMySite.com - For your hosting needs |

Thanks You can tell by examining the headers on several of the returned emails. The mail will show whether it originated from Yahoo. From your description it is most likely "spoofing", a common occurrence.

Thanks, Dan It sounds like to me that your ex-wife's email address is being put in the return-reply line of junk email header. When the junk email can't be sent, it bounces back into her account causing a mess. I wouldn't call it a 'stolen email account' but rather 'spoofing' so that the spammer doesn't have to deal with mail daemons. I get a lot of my role email accounts spoofed all the time which causes a lot of email firewall replies which either say that that it can't be delivered or is blocked. --

| From what you and others have said I have to agree that it's spoofing. As MGD said earlier to check the header, we did and it does not originate from Yahoo. Guess it will just have to run it's course.
Thanks to everyone who responded. It shows I still have alot to learn about the wacky world of the web. And because of this I think we'll have a new member shortly. Dan -- I'm an Einstoner and crunch for BBR Team Starfire Einstein @ Home! Join Us! VoicePulse 07/29/04 |

Or the spammers just dictionary spams your domain name to find legitimate email accounts, which then, they use them in the return-reply of their junk email.
Case in point:
I received 6613 junk emails in October, which breaks down to 213.323 a day. My estimates is that in one year, I should receive over seventy thousand junk emails, which shows how bad the spamming problem is. --
