Rogers rumoured to be LOWERING bandwidth caps for High Speed internet service

If the rumours Digital Home is hearing are true, Rogers High Speed Internet (HSI) customers that love Bittorrent, downloading movies and watching lots of video over the internet are going to get really upset in coming weeks.

According to several sources that we spoke to, Rogers is planning to lower their bandwidth caps for the majority of their High Speed Internet plans. The company that once advertised its extreme plan as “unlimited” is now expected to slash bandwidth caps by up to 84%.
It should be noted that lower bandwidth caps have not been officially announced by the company, however, internet service providers seldom send out press releases when they are cutting back service so we don’t expect the company to be trumpeting these changes anytime soon.

In addition to lowering bandwidth caps, the company is also boosting the amount charged for every additional GB of bandwidth usage beyond your bandwidth cap. Currently the company charges $1.25 per gigabyte beyond the plans current cap. This rise in overage fees is up 20% on the Extreme plan and 300% for users of the Ultra lite plan.

The following is a list of changes by plan that we expect will be foisted on almost 1.4 million Rogers High Speed Internet customers in the near future.

* Extreme - bandwith cap reduced from 100GB to 75GB per month. $1.50 for each extra GB up to a max of 50 GB’s per month.
* Express - bandwith cap reduced from 60 GB to 50GB per month. $2.00 for each extra GB up to a max of 30 GB’s per month.
* Lite - bandwith cap reduced from 60GB to 25 GB per month. $2.50 for each extra GB up to a max of 30 GB’s per month.
* Ultra Lite - bandwith cap reduced from 60GB to 10 GB per month. $5.00 for each extra GB up to a max of 30 GB’s per month.

Rogers Wimax plans - Portable Internet and Portable Internet Basic - which were only introduced in the last year and have considerably lower bandwidth caps (and high overage fees) will not change.

Up for discussion in our High Speed Internet forum

Wow, if these numbers become a reality, it'll definitely send some of us from this board running (most probably to TekSavvy, as I was about to do earlier this year), but as mentioned before in several different posts around the Rogers forum, we don't represent a large percentage.

Then again, with all the different types of media that are slowly becoming more and more mainstream these days (especially ones that require larger amounts of bw), that might change...

I really hope this doesn't happen. 100gigs for the Extreme service is a perfect fit in my opinion. Anything lower is a slap across the face.

Depending on how this effects me (Sometimes I download 30gigs in a months, sometimes 95gigs.), I may end up canceling all 4 of my Rogers services.

The caps are just fine as they are. Stupid Rogers.

As much as this sounds possible, I can't see them charging an Ultra Lite user $174 for downloading 40GB's...
or a $100 for 55 GBs with lite.

These two services are specially crafted for non tech savvy people, but they will surely notice a $100 bill increase. If this does take effect, you can bet people will leave.

Man oh man, it is nice that they are going backwards when it comes to internet usage. I can not even believe they would consider this.

You can believe it ... it's Rogers ... although they may have played the cat and mouse game with Bell again ... release this when Bell started talking caps ... see how far bell goes then don't implement and watch people leave bell!

Damn that is god awful. The fact is you can do 100GB with legal downloads now.

I love when people talk about the future is downloading everything. Yeah right. So is rogers forcing the current caps yet?

I just left 'cause I don't want to get a bill that surprise me. Talked to the CSR and he still not sure when they gonna implement it. Just said they will definitely do it with a max charge of $200 for extreme. Ted sure know how to make money.
I was still with them when they throttling BT as I don't do BT. But when it comes to caps for $1.25 per GB and don't want to lower the basic price for extreme, it simply means they want to change the agreement and make more money.
The cost of Internet in Canada is quite high compare to the other countries.

If only the Rogers reps checked these boards as much as the TekSavvy guys did... then again, like I said earlier, we're a very small minority guys... checked my gf's account for her today, and in the past 6 months, she hasn't broken the 1gb mark... but again, as resources and media become more interactive, in demand, and easy to use, this will all change, and then Rogers will have to change with it, or hell will freeze over and Verizon will finally come to Canada :P

Verizon and other US companies will NOT come to Canada.

US companies have LEFT Canada! Concentric (XO), AT&T, Sprint.

Is there a technical reason for doing this or is it just a for extra profit?

lol @ snickfiberal! I noticed the same thing on my gf's account, I assure you that your usage is not 0

sbrook: hence the hell freezing over bit :P

Then again, cheap fiber optic setups could lower prices by creating competition for Rogers and Bell... we just need a provider with the balls and vision (and the money) to set it up...

I think TechSavy will be the leader in a alternative choice to Rogers.
