typical spin...

"However, the primary goal of the laws is to eliminate build-out requirements so the companies can selectively deploy next-generation technology to only the most profitable areas"

Is this fact, or typical BBR spin? Would love to see some links and proof that this is happening...

Not linkable proof, but when I asked my tech who fixed my NID to get AT&T DSL about when I would see U-Verse in my small town, the answer was pretty much never. The closest it will get to me is about 50 miles south in Norwich according to his meeting the day before. There are only 10,000 people where I live, and there is no reason to roll it out.

I would love to have the option as we have Metrocast cable (ok) and I have trees blocking the LOS to get DirectTV.

I'm a tech, and we aren't in the loop on future deployment plans. Which change constantly, btw.

Considering the VRADS only serve 200 customers per shelf, Putnam's population density of 435 per square mile might be pretty attractive.

Re: typical spin...

I can only relay what was told to me. He told me Norwich was as close to putname as it would get. I am not knocking the tech, actually he was awesome and removed alot of footage off my loop so I could get Elite. 5 mbps down and 630 kbps up, not too shabby.

You wanna see evidence of of telco redlining? Come to Coloma. I'll give you a tour along miles of Comcast fiber in areas where the mighty T's DSL is still not available.

After that tour, lets go to California & other states where there are thousands of residents in lower and middle income neighborhoods who all have access to U-verse. Apparently you can also redline and cherrypick the news if it meets your agenda...

So when can I expect to see U-Verse in my poor rural backwater neighborhood?

You talking the Polynesian? Also, did you get U-Verse offered to you yet? The VRADS are planted and the cable plant is all tuned up by me, yet no offers of service yet.

Yes - I did get Uverse offered to me.

Got it. Have you tried it out yet? I'm curious if it's anything close to what they are pushing it as being.

Have you even read any of these laws that have been passed? That'd be the proof enough right there.

This isnt the "typical BBR spin". Its actually a breakdown in layman terms what these laws end up doing.

I have to ask, what company would deploy ANYTHING to an area that won't make money? Whether it be a gas station, Wal-Mart or TV service. Yes AT&T is selectively placing Uverse - so what? But, the idea that they are placing ONLY for RICH people is completely false. If you want to call the inner cities of New Haven, Hartford, Bridgeport, Meriden and Waterbury rich go right ahead but there are MANY people that would disagree with that. AT&T is placing Uverse based primarily on population density and by definition the VERY RICH are almost excluded from that. When you have 1 home per 5 acres versus 5 homes per acre you do the math and figure out where you would deploy YOUR services.

Re: typical spin...

When two people have a couple move in next door and your "city" has 100% growth rate, doesn't make it profitable.

I grew up around there (Woodbury), the traffic light in the "center" of town was commonly referred to as "THE traffic light". Beautiful place, but it rivals Western Mass for "ruralness". Which is exactly where wireline business will NOT go.

It is a bit of spin insofar as it suggests that companies are trying to eliminate requirements to build out rural areas of a state. The current law does not require companies to build out rural areas of a state.

Current law allows a local jurisdiction to require that a CATV provider serve every address in the locality. But it does nothing to prevent the CATV provider from selecting only suburban localities rather than rural localities.
