Re: Vote for national HD channels you most want added to Fios

Its marketing, they know the average person will jump to the provider who has the most hd channels.Companies love using that hd name and companies like D* are going to use that to there advantage.its like the hddvd and blueray war.I remember when that first started and how they said that HDDVD had the advantage because of the hd name.Even photo printers take advantage of the name HD.Epson photo printers are now HD printers.

I think verizon is being too tight lip about there plans.I think it was a mistake on there part saying it will be another 7 months before there going to release a significant amount of channels.I think they should took the approach of quality over quantity.Saying that there only going to release hd channels that had mostly true hd content.Like on the TBS uproar. They should of pointed out at that time that there not going to release a hd channel that doesn't show true hd content most of the time.I think they should have some type of release schedule like D* even though its not the amount D* has it would something.I would be happy with 1 or 2 a month until spring. To say there going to add a few hd channels by the end of the year than have a 5 or 6 month gap is a mistake.Trying to throw us some bones like games and a pretty guide isn't going to affect the average person. The average person is just looking for more HD.

Quantity and not quality should be the issue. Directv will booast at the end of the year that they have 100 HD channels while FIOS TV only has 27 .To most consumers who really care about HD, this would be a no-brainer.

What Verizon should do in the interim is to lock in as much agreements as it can for HD channels(try to get all the ones Directv has) and the ones that it doesn’t including the 15 VOOM channels. Then, it soon advertise, saying, very soon, it too will have over 100 HD channels. Directv has been advertising this for over a year and it got a lot of people excited for good reason and they finally delivered.

Its kinda ironic that Verizon circulated a PR flyer earlier in the year that it has the capacity to offer up to 400 HD channels. This was in response to Directv’s announcement of 100 HD channels. Verizon FIOS TV got caught with their pants down with this HD fiasco.

1 edit

They did get caught with there pants down and there in a bad spot because they dragged there feet on the upgrades and its obvious these upgrades are going to take them a while, so why not try to put a different spin on things.I don't know about anybody else, but theres 2 things I hate the most when watching hidef, is stretch-o-vison tv and 4:3 content on wide screen tv.

That got me curious because usually Verizon isn't so specific. So I did some googling.

The only thing I could find was this link:
»sev.prnewswire.com/computer-elec···7-1.html
where Verizon was quoted as saying more than 400 all-digital channels (no mention of just HD).

And here where Comcast was quoted as saying more than 400 HD this year:

I posted this elsewhere (the NASA channel request thread), but it may help here also. If you want Verizon to know what you're thinking, use the "Love Your FiOS? Share your Input" link at this URL: »www22.verizon.com/content/fiostv···s+tv.htm to submit comments. I understand that Verizon actually reads the suggestions. I put in my request for the NASA channel, along with (lack of) HD channel comments.

Thanks! ... I did see your other post on this and immediately went and filled out the survey. It would certainly be good news if they took the suggestions to heart. I'm with you on both the NASA channel (the HDnet commentary is terrible beyond words) and more HD (which I now think they totally misjudged).

"I suppose it would benefit, as some folks say hockey and baseball do- it would be much easier to follow the puck/ball. But, a poker tournament, the Skipper yelling at Gilligan, old film clips from WWII, or Chris Matthews? I have to wonder. Mark F."

Would you have to wonder with Bill Orielly in HD?

"Why would I fight for HD channels for crap like the cartoon channel, my kids and even I like that channel like it is, why upconvert 50 year old cartoons and demand it?"

I get what your saying...but some of the newer cartoons in HD would be great...I would love to see "The Avatar" on Nickelodeon in HD, its one of my favorite shows. I admit this with no shame, especially on an internet message board with complete anonymity.

My 2 Cents:

1. Discovery HD - Why? Best HD content of any channel yet.
2. Sci-Fi HD - Why? Battlestar Galactica, of course!
3. Cartoon Network HD - Why? cause toons is good.
4. CNN HD - Why? More room for graphics!
5. History Channel HD - Why? Programming that does not promote brain rot.
6. USA HD - Why? Better content than ABC/CBS/NBC

(and yes, I am a current FIOS HD customer)

Enough new votes since my last update to do another but final vote count update for this thread. Anyone else want to add their 2 bits, post by 6 PM ET (or whenever after that I actually get to updating the spreadsheet). Please keep it to 5 HD channels if you can, 6 only if you really can't choose between 5 and 6.

Here is the final vote totals for the HD channels dslreports members most want to be added with 46 people contributing as of 6 PM October 23. This is a completely unscientific poll of course, but 46 contributors is a decent poll size, which I think it is large enough to be meaningful. If we do get Discovery HD this Friday, Verizon will have added the most requested channel. If anyone has contacts or email addresses at Verizon or in the programming department, please feel free to forward this info or a link to this thread to them. Now how about Sci-Fi and USA HD, sooner rather than later? And Versus/Golf HD to keep the restless sports fan happy? And maybe FX-HD if they ever start showing real HD (reportedly by next week)?

26 Discovery HD
23 Sci-Fi HD
18 USA HD
17 FX HD
13 Versus / Golf Channel HD
12 CNN HD
11 Animal Planet HD
8 History Channel HD
8 Science Channel HD
8 TBS HD
7 Cartoon Network HD
6 Big Ten HD
5 TLC HD
4 Bravo HD
4 Speed HD
3 Smithsonian HD
1 Fox Business Network HD
1 MGM
1 MOJO
1 ShowTime Too HD
1 Starz Edge HD
1 Weather Channel HD
0 CNBC HD
0 Fuel HD
0 Outdoor Channel 2 HD
0 Starz Comedy HD
0 Starz Kids and Family

You've had Discovery HD Theater.

@ibm.com

Nevermind, I just saw the explanation of the difference in another thread.

I will say though, I did hear from a Verizon friend that DirecTV apparently got exclusive rights to a bunch of HD channels by fooling the channel providers into thinking no other service could provide the capacity.

Outdoor Channel 2 HD? (not sure if anyone carries this channel)
As a side note, I was in Best Buy one day and they had a HD loop running and it included several minutes of the Outdoor Channel 2 HD. It was very impressive. I think D-TV has indicated this will be added to their HD tier this year, and it is carried on several cable systems and on the C band (for free I think). Here is some info I found:

Outdoor Channel 2 HD was officially launched on July 1, 2005. The new, all HD network features exclusive new content filmed entirely in high-definition, in addition to select fan favorites from the existing "The Outdoor Channel" programming, all filmed entirely in real (not up-converted) high-definition.
I voted for Outdoor Channel 2, or at least it was my number 6. If it has all HD content it would be a welcomed addition.
