2 edits | Shooting For A Cause: The Categories and some updates
Here are the winners of the Categories poll:
Earth and Sky Wildlife Sunsets Flowers
I've already gone through the originally submitted images and organized them (or moved them to an "Unsorted" folder if they didn't fit those categories). I'll work on a submissions method next.
EDIT: I just found out some information from my cousin (who works at my uncle's tax firm). If we make under $600 with the calendars, then there's no tax problem at all. It doesn't even get reported to the IRS. (CafePress even says this on their website.)
If we make more than $600, then the person receiving the money and passing it onto the charity would need to declare it on their taxes. However, if they document everything (costs to run the program/send the money, receipt that the charity received all of the money, etc), then all of that would come off of their taxes.
This takes care of my major worry that I would be fielding this money from CafePress to the charity and would then wind up with a huge tax bill at the end of the year.
EDIT #2: I called the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and left a message regarding the project. Hopefully, they will call back soon.
Also, my wife seems to be vehemently opposed to me being the person to collect money for this project. (She thinks that I'm spread too thin as it is with my PCQandA and other websites.) So we would need to find someone else to do that job. Someone trustworthy and someone who wouldn't mind having to keep receipts/documentation for their taxes. |

| I just spoke with Tracey from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. She's going to send me an application form for a license agreement. We would fill that out (our group's information, what the fund raiser entails, etc) and sent it back to them. Once their legal department approves it, they would send us a license agreement (signed by 2 VPs). We would then hold the fund raiser (i.e. sell the calendars) and finally donate the money.
I'll let everyone know when I get the application. |

| reply to Jason Levine Well, I may have to eat some crow, it looks like we have some good forward momentum. I think a photobook may have been too loft an ambition the first time out, but calendars seem like a great idea.
As always, you are welcome to use the image I submitted. -- Some assembly required, your mileage may vary, no pixels were harmed in the writing of this post. Brain cells, though, are a different matter. You want fries with that? |

| reply to Jason Levine Some more information. I was thinking about the CafePress checks and wondered why we couldn't just have the checks sent directly to (and made out to) the charity. I've sent a message to CafePress asking about this possibility. If this can be done, it would vastly simplify the fund raiser since we wouldn't need someone to 1) collect the checks from CafePress, 2) donate the money to the charity, and 3) deal with the checks/donations on their taxes if the raised amount totaled more than $600. |

| Yup. I will call Tracey back if CafePress says we could do that.
I have the Photo Submissions page done, but I'm just waiting for my web host to make some directories writable. Then I just would need to test it out before posting the URL. With luck, we'll be able to start submissions tomorrow. |

| To quote Professor Farnsworth: "Good news, everyone!"
Here's the reply from CafePress:
Thank you for contacting CafePress.com!
Many of our shopkeepers use their CafePress.com shop as a way to earn money for a charity. Rather than keeping their earnings for themselves, they will donate them. To donate your proceeds to a charity you will need to request their non profit tax ID number and enter it in the "Payee Information" page along with their address and phone number.
If there is anything else I can do for you please let me know.
So we can set up the shop and not have to deal with the money at all! This will make things much smoother. |

| reply to Jason Levine Wow Jason you've really made some strides. I sent 4 e-mails to the NCMEC and heard nothing. Perhaps they don't check their e-mail. Glad things are getting underway and that things seem to be falling into place. Once we get everything set license wise it might be a good idea to see what type of press we can drum up. I'm no good with the details of html and all that actual useful knowledge. I know lots of us have other websites. Could someone design a clickable button that would link directly to cafepress where people could buy the calendar? I'm sure I'm not using technical language but hopefully you get my meaning. -- I am a contradiction in terms. Good luck. |

| Unfortunately, I haven't gotten the promised e-mailed application form. (I've even been checking my spam folder.) I plan on calling Tracey back today.
As far as the button goes, luckily the title of my day job is "Webmaster." If someone designed an image, I could put it up on ShootingforaCause.com. I could then write some simple code for people to use to advertise the calendars on their websites. |

Just called and spoke with Tracey again. I think we cleared up the problem. She was spelling my last name "lavine" instead of "levine" in my e-mail address. Hopefully, I'll have that application form shortly. |

| That was quick. Not two minutes after I posted last, I got this in my e-mail:
Jason,
Thank you for taking interest in our organization. It is with the support of concerned individuals like you that the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) continues its efforts to locate and recover missing children, and to raise public awareness about ways to prevent child abduction, endangerment, and sexual exploitation.
In order to use NCMECs name in conjunction with your promotion or event, you will need a license agreement. Please complete and return the attached Third Party Event License Application with the relevant information regarding your fundraiser. This application does not authorize you to use NCMECs name and/or logo. If your application is incomplete, we will send it back to you. Upon approval of your application, a license agreement will be sent to you. Please allow up to 30 days for license agreement processing.
Below are the Better Business Bureaus guidelines, which we must adhere to when involved with any fundraiser or event. Please send me any promotional flyers or materials you intend to use to accompany your promotion or event for approval as well.
Please do not hesitate to contact me at (703) 837-6424 or tsokolski@ncmec.org should you need further information. Also, you can visit our web page at: www.missingkids.com. Again, thank you for your interest in benefiting NCMEC. I look forward to hearing from you soon!
Better Business Bureau Guidelines for Charity Organizations
For your understanding, when money is raised on our behalf and any copyrighted material of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) is used in conjunction with any type of solicitation, the following must be disclosed at the point of solicitation, in keeping with the Better Business Bureau's guidelines for charity organizations:
* the actual/anticipated portion of the purchase price that will benefit the charity (e.g., "5 cents will be contributed to abc charity for every product of xyz company sold"),
* the duration of the campaign (e.g. for the month of October),
* any maximum or guaranteed minimum contribution amount (e.g. up to a maximum of $200,000).
Best wishes,
Tracy Stoneberg
The application itself is 16 questions long. I'll try to fill it out myself and will post if I need help with any of the answers. |

| reply to Jason Levine That's fantastic. Sounds like we need the help of an artist. I can capture the beauty in the world but I'll be damned if I can create it. Perhaps we should start a topic calling for an artist in the house. ahh heck I'll scurry off and do it now. -- I am a contradiction in terms. Good luck. |

| reply to Jason Levine Filling out the application now. (Slow day at work and no e-mails in my inbox helps. )
I'm running into some tricky questions. Not that the questions themselves are tricky, just how we answer them. Here are the questions:
1 Licensees FULL NAME -- not name of event(If the Licensee is not an individual, but a corporation, partnership or some other entity, please fill in that information, giving the full entity name.) 2 Licensees Physical Address 3 Licensees Mailing Address(if different than above) 4 Name of Signatory 5 Title of Signatory(not applicable if Licensee is an individual) 6 Term of License Start and End Dates of Promotion or Date of Event 7 PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONPlease give a complete description of the program. If you will be raising money for NCMEC, include the details about how you intend to raise funds and how much of the funds will be donated to NCMEC (i.e. 100% of money raised, $2 for every widget sold, etc.). Be as specific as possible. 8 Estimated income from promotion or event that will be donated to NCMEC (You are not guaranteeing this amount). $ 9 How will NCMEC receive funds?(Will pledges be sent directly to NCMEC, will Licensee remit payment to NCMEC bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, etc. or within 10 or 30 days of the event)EXAMPLE: Licensee shall remit such payment to NCMEC within 2 weeks following the date of the event. 10 Licensees Web address 11 Licensees Phone/Fax Number 12 Other informationPlease list any information that should be reflected in your agreement that is not stated above. 13 Benefit to company submitting application for license 14 What is expected of NCMEC to implement this program? 15 Will other charities receive a portion of the income? If yes, who else will benefit? 16 How did you hear about NCMEC?
My answers so far (questions are bolded):
1. Do I put my name? The forum name? Shooting For A Cause? 2. My address 3. Blank (same as above) 4. My name 5. Blank 6. Not sure. How long would this promotion run for? Keep in mind that want to allow 30 days for Application processing. 7. Members of the Digital Imaging Forum at BroadbandReports.com will put together a series of four 2008 calendars featuring photographs taken by forum members. These calendars will be offered for sale on CafePress.com with all proceeds going to NCMEC. The calendars will have the following themes: Earth and Sky, Wildlife, Sunrise Sunset, and Flowers. 8. Not sure what to put here. I'm guessing that we'll sell calendars at $5 over CafePress' minimum. This would be $5 to NCMEC per calendar sold. Should we figure on 100 calendars sold and call it $100? 9. Licensee will set up the CafePress account so that funds get sent to NCMEC on a monthy basis as per CafePress policies. 10. »Digital Imaging and »www.shootingforacause.com/ 11. My work number (best way to reach me if they want to call me) 12. Blank 13. None. This is being done as a pure charity effort. 14. Nothing, beyond permitting use of your logo and collecting the money. 15. No 16. Give.org
What do you think? Any ideas for answers to the bolded sections? |

1 edit | Not to answer my own questions, but I decided to call Tracey at NCMEC back and ask about the bolded questions. Here are the answers I got:
#1 It's best to put my name and then add "On behalf of..." I'm going to put down "Jason Alan Levine on behalf of Shooting For A Cause and the Digital Imaging forum members at BroadbandReports.com"
#6 The exact timeframe isn't important here. I'm going to put down December 1st, 2007 to August 31st, 2008. (I figure that 2008 calendars will stop selling when the year is more than half over.)
#8 A guesstimate is fine. They're not holding us to some minimum amount. Nor will they be annoyed if we raise more than the estimate. EDIT: I meant to post a guesstimate. Let's figure that each calendar will sell 50 copies. That's 200 calendars at $5 each, so $1,000. Sound good?
One other point she raised was that we need to make sure that CafePress is marking the checks as being from the Shooting For A Cause fundraiser so they know where the money is coming from.
Also, I think I should contact Justin before I use the BroadbandReports.com name in this application as this project, while related to BBR in that we're all members here, isn't an official BBR project. |

| reply to Jason Levine Another minor change (just to clarify), I've changed the answer to #7 to:
Members of the Digital Imaging Forum at BroadbandReports.com will put together a series of four 2008 calendars featuring photographs taken by forum members. These calendars will be offered for sale on CafePress.com with all proceeds going to NCMEC. The calendars will have the following themes: Earth and Sky, Wildlife, Sunrise Sunset, and Flowers.
Calendars will be sold online via CafePress.com with proceeds sent directly to NCMEC. |

| reply to Jason Levine The application has officially been sent off. Now we play the waiting game. (Ah, the waiting game stinks. Let's ply Hungry Hungry Hippos. )
Actually, we're going to be busy while we wait for a response from NCMEC. We're still accepting submissions and designing the web buttons. Then we need to select from the submitted photos, design the calendars themselves, and set up the CafePress account. |
