Or...

build some type of enclosure to cover it depending where it is, keep it tasteful.

The far and away majority are put in out of the way places or fenced in. But Chicago politicians just want more graft from ATT so they'll rail on them. They have more money than homeless people and less local political power than developers (both of which are far greater at ruining the scenery.

West Chicago is not the same as Chicago.

Either way...the point about their demands and purity of interests remain.

Not really. If you've seen some existing installation of the ATT boxes, you'd see why everyone is upset about them being placed in their back yard or community.

Not to mention that AT&T and its predecessor companies have a long history of screwing the consumer...especially Illinoisans.

This is not a political issue...the City is just obeying the will of the people.

West Chicago is served pretty well by existing 6Mbps ATT DSL, so we don't need Fiber for the same speed but with an extra side of monopoly fries.

There is also Comcast for both broadband and TV. Satellite for TV.

Covad and XO for DSL. Sprint Broadband Direct and soon Sprint XOHM for wireless Internet...not to mention the 5 or so independent wireless ISPs and the omnipresent WiFi.

I'd love to have more competition, more innovative services, cheaper prices etc. But what AT&T is peddling is none of those things....it's 6Mbps Internet, with second-rate IPTV...and it cuts out the last remaining shreds of CLEC competition. No thanks.

I agree with you. Most of them here are in pretty unubtrusive places. But as far as I'm concerned, that just gives the companies less reason to object to finding reasonable alternatives to the troublesome placements.

If the company could wire the whole city up and only had to place ONE of these big-ass ugly boxes in someone's front yard, I still think that person should be compensated for the decrease in their property value (either cash or free service to the premises regardless of owner) or have the opportunity to decline.

Demand what the good folks in Milwaukee got! May not be as small as some would want, but neighbors have stopped caring for some reason.

Think about IT

These companies that you talk about don't work without connecting to At&t at some point to get you to the internet.

AT&T, despite what it likes to think, not the entire Internet. There are plenty of backbone providers.

Re: Or...

Not when it's throwing these boxes in front of people's houses in public right-of-way, which is the issue at hand.

The right of way requires a large space to place one. They're not squeezing these into 2ft wide routes. Almost every place I've seen them placed has been purchased land.

That's complete bollocks.

Easements around here are about 6-8 feet wide, sometimes more.

AT&T is not purchasing land for each of those boxes. Ain't happening. If you think it would be expensive for 6hem to bury, they could NEVER do it if they had to buy each little piece of land.
