I see now that this "Example Zope Program" was only discovered today, and they have no idea, at the moment, how much of a hole they have in their own system. People are posting several types of illegal materials on their site, and they deserve it.

Jason Levine : I can see how some code can be copyrighted. For example, if I code a "Levine Javascript Library", then it would be copyrighted by me. I could request that anyone who used it retain a copyright notice notifying people that I made it. I might be able to go after someone who took it and tried to pass it off as their own work. However, I couldn't be able to claim that you couldn't view the source code without my permission. Especially not when the code gets loaded into the browser is such a readable form.

For instance, I cannot copyright "like any code", but I can copyright this entire paragraph. In fact, the act of writing this causes it to be copyrighted (but not registered).

But you're talking about what's in between the tags right. That I understand. I guess if you consider the entire paragraph "part of the code"... Maybe that's what I'm not understanding. Just seems to be an awfully big net they're casting.

Doctor Four : This is the same law firm that tried to copyright their
own Cease & Desist notice, which Public Citizen then
called them out about it and posted it and a scathing
reply (also sent to them). This was concerning such a
notice sent to a website called infomercialscams.com and
some related sites over calling Directbuy a scam (which
it is.) They did this in order to try and avoid the
Streisand Effect, but really all they did was draw more
unwanted attention to themselves, daring people to flout
their so-called "copyright".

Let's see. Spammers as clients. These guys are definitely
cart00neys.

Its sad when companies don't know what they are getting themselves into. I saw a designers portfolio today that landed a really nice job. I got the address from the card and the site and portfolio sites really look like a preschooler did them. Worse then some of the worse Ive seen. And these are major corporations...

I amazed people would hire these people based on statements like that. I doubt if they got al gore "the creator of the internet" or whatever any of that bs would hold up in court. Id like to take their html and style it differently with css just to tempt them :)

Maybe the prohibition against linking to or viewing the source code of their site is a good thing. If no one (including Google) linked to their site, maybe they would go out of business.

Mospaw : My browser is "viewing" the source in order to display that page. So by visiting that web site, I'm causing my browser to break that law. They might as well have "reading this sentence is against the terms of use for this site" in their copyright statement. It makes about as much sense.

I can understand protecting things, but that's overboard. It's also rather pompous. These guys seem like putzes. Let's make lots of blustery threats and scare the uninitiated. I'm sure there's a grandma in Peoria losing sleep over this, but elsewhere life goes on unchanged.

Exactly.. by using their website you agree not to view their source. It's interesting... I think I'll copy their user agreement to my website.. without their stupid link of course. :)

ihaddsl : These guys need to go back to law school.. Copyright does not give them the right to prevent viewing, as the name implied Copyright is about making copies, not viewing or listening to something

since the html code is already downloaded you your computer when you visit the page, you are not engaging in any further 'copying' in any sense when you select 'view source'

Jason Levine : This is too hilarious (yet at the same time, very sad). Apparently, Dozier Internet Law believes that the copyright on their website allows them to forbid anyone from viewing the HTML code on their website. They also forbid linking to their site without permission.

So, according to them, I'm breaking the law if I say that I went to »www.cybertriallawyer.com/ and clicked View->Page Source.

How stupid can you get?
