Connection speed

Is there a reason my DSL modem shows up connection 384k / down connection 384k where I am supposed to have 1.5M up and 384k down?

The 1.5/384 plan took almost a week to ramp up for me. You'll start at 384/384, then go to 768/384, and finally to 1536/384 if your signal is clean enough. You could post your statistics information (especially line attenuation and signal/noise ratio on the downstream) from your modem here and people could probably give you a pretty good idea if you will reach 1536/384 without incident.

See »Ameritech - SBC FAQ »New & upgraded customers read this about speeds. (Ramp-up), and you might want to look thru the list of other forum FAQs at »Ameritech - SBC FAQ

Don't forget to leave your modem powered up continuously during the first 10 days, even if you power down the computer.

On the statistics page of your modem, which would be at »192.168.0.1/statistics.htm if you have a Speedstream 4100 modem, will identify the SN Margin (dB) and the Line Attenuation (dB) to the modem. These figures will tend to indicate how much the sync can be increased.

OK Thanks. I actually have the new Motorola modem so those stuff are at »192.168.1.254/wt108Stats.htm

I got the following figures:

SN Margin (dB) 13.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 55.0

And I just spotted that my speed increased to 768 Kbps (Downstream).

I expect you will make it to 1536 but I wouldn't expect you to be able to upgrade above that. Others will probably have a different guess.

I suggest you check your signals periodically. Expect a drop in signal to noise when the sync speed goes up. It will be interesting to know how much. SN varies over time, so that is why you would want to check it several times. It will be interesting how much SN drop you get, on average, when the sync goes up again.

I'll chevk. Tegarding the speed actually they would not sign me up for a higher speed than 1.5M.

Hey hey!

It finally went up to 1536/384 with
SN Margin (dB) 14.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 56.0

Tests from speedtest.net give 1286/316 average. That's nice.

Strange. An increase in S/N was unexpected.

The output power level is the third factor in this equation and the 4100 modem doesn't report it. There might have been a jump in the output power level along with the speed step so that the noise margin was increased as well.

You are thinking that the central office or RT raised its downstream signal level? That could certainly explain things.

The modem controls the output power levels from the DSLAM/RTs within the allowable limits. So it should have requested more power, if available, to enable it to both operate at the higher download speed and maintain a respectable noise margin.

It may now be operating at full power, but on the 4100 you can't tell.

I actually got a 2210 but was not able to find the info either.

Really? The 2210 should have the output power levels on the Techreadout page. I think they should be on line 148 listed as Current TP. Your Rx side should be close to 20 dBm and the Tx side close to 12.

You're right:

148 Current TP 13.7 2.6

The vlaues are less than you expected though.

If those readings are really the proper output power readings (they weren't on the older Speedstreams), then it is a good thing that they aren't nearly maxed out. Your line has some reserve output power that your modem can call on if line conditions ever deteriorate. It would be equivalent to having to use some unused volume potential on a radio after the background noise in a room became too loud.

I have a question - I just got a new Motorola modem and a new router to replace my 2Wire 1701G. I've had the DSL line for a while now. Do I still need to leave my new modem on for 10 days? Thanks.

I am pretty sure you don't, unless you changed your speed too. I leave my modem on anyway.

I have a SBC 3.0 Mbit line and get exactly 1984 consistently.

Is that about right with these kind of stats?

SN Margin (dB) 19.5
Line Attenuation (dB) 36.0

How likely will these stats improve in the future? should I just downgrade?
