I just saw it on ABC7 a few minutes ago. It landed on the lake and will begin air operations tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing some footage of an old magnificent lady in action. |

Ten years ago it was in the same area on a firefighting demonstration flight: " ...Southern California area while scoops and drops were undertaken in conjunction with the Catalina near the Queen Mary. Also, the Mars ventured to Lake Elsinore for further scoops and drops. Since the area is not exactly blessed with lakes, the Mars demonstrated that it could also scoop out of the ocean, which it did near Malibu. County, city, and fire officials were greatly impressed with the massive cascade of water pouring from Hawaii Mars and as we go to press the decision is being made on whether the Mars will be placed under contract." Some county roads and state highways, including Angeles Crest Highway, will remain open to traffic. But drivers are urged to use extreme caution and be aware of any fire activity in the area. Individuals or organizations with special-use permits for sanctioned activities are exempt from the order.
In the San Bernardino National Forest, access is still allowed to the Serrano Campground, the Alpine Pedal Path and the Juniper Point Parking Area. Visitors must remain vigilant and obey fire restrictions, including no smoking and no wood or charcoal fires anywhere on the forest. | 4 Involved in San Diego Helicopter Crash
Just what we need, more injuries from an Arson set fire.
Helicopter Privately Owned RAMONA, Oct. 24, 2007 (CNS) - A helicopter operated by a contractor for San Diego Gas & Electric crashed in an avocado grove northeast of Poway Thursday, authorities reported. The four occupants of the aircraft apparently suffered minor injuries when it went down in a rural area near Sky Valley Drive and Rancho del Sol in the San Pasqual area, according to the California Highway Patrol, which received an emergency call. It was not immediately clear what caused the helicopter to crash. Those aboard reportedly were flying over the area in order to check on the condition of power lines. » abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?section=local&id= -- My Bloggs, »www.insidetheie.com/ »earthlogii.blogspot.com/ »vietaffairsvets.blogspot.com/ Each Mans Death is his own Apocalypse. |

| reply to ghostpainter Ask the Chief
Those of you who live in the jurisdiction of the Orange County Fire Authority, or in a wildland interface area that abuts their jurisdiction, might want to ask Chief Prather "What happened to the dozers?" Back when it was known as Orange County Fire Dept, they owned and operated two fire dozers and transports. For the clueless, dozers can cut a lot of fireline in a short amount of time. -- I did not. |

| One of the Register articles described a scene where they were clearing a line along a ridge near Silverado with them.
I went to Brea yesterday and came back through the leading edge of the burn area on the 241 toll road. What a mess. The scale of it was hard to take in.
Some portions were burned so intensely, there was nothing - no stumps, stubs, twigs, nothing. Just black dirt. Other parts were more typical - big trees still standing, some shrubs with a little green left. I assume that some of that has to do with previous burns in addition to fuel factors.
I had the camera with me, but it was too hazy to get anything worthwhile. As things clear, I'll be hiking and biking up into some of the familiar territory and taking stock of what is or is not left. |

Firemen in Their Portable Fire Shelters |
When I first saw this, I thought it was some weird rock outcropping. No! It's a dozen firemen huddled in their portable shelters as they were overtaken by the flames.

I wanted to take a drive up Tustin Ranch Rd to Jamboree yesterday after work to get some photos, but realized the same thing - that it would be too hazy/smoky still to get anything good. Maybe this weekend will be better. The air quality here at UCI is a bit better today. |

whoa! The OC register had a photo of one of the used shelters on the ground, this morning. I guess the photographer had some kind of shelter too? Or a really long lens. |
