Santiago fire now within a half mile of Riverside County line ... - 9:06 a.m.
The Santiago wildfire has bulled its way to within half a mile of the Riverside County line at its nearest point. Firefighters were planning today to make a stand at the county line, but said they may have to resort to "bump-and-run" defensive tactics if the fire breaks through.
Fire crews lit controlled backfires overnight near Williams Canyon. The fires devoured grass and brush in the area, creating a firebreak that officials said should protect part of Silverado Canyon.
edit - For the Captain's benefit:
"Nine helicopters have joined the fight against the Santiago wildfire, bringing the total number in the air to 13. Also fighting the fire: 24 hand crews, 11 bulldozers, 216 fire engines, 12 water tenders and four air tankers." |

1 edit | I am still getting updates from all of my fire sources....I could post them but a lot of them are aircraft scanner talk, especially over the new fire in Big Bear.
They are waiting for the super scooper's to get in....Looks like Butler Peak again.
Fire Crews Concentrated Near Snow Valley; Big Bear Events and Closures --The updated reports on the Slide and Grass Valley Fires, is that they have achieved improved containment on both fires. Over 2,100 firefighters are at work on both blazes, and the Slide Fire is now at 15% containment on the 13, 378 acre blaze. The Grass Valley Fire is now at 70% containment over 1,100 acres, with an updated structure loss count of 160.
Firefighting crews have concentrated efforts on the 13 Turns section of Highway 18, both day and night, to ensure that the Slide Fire does not cross the highway between Snow Valley Ski Area and Green Valley Lake Road. John Miller of the U.S. Forest Service spoke to us directly from this area this morning, and reports that this is a ground fire, and most trees along the roadway due remain intact. However, the fire did reach the roadway, from about a ¼ mile west of the top of 13 Turns and down to near the Green Vally turnoff. Still, Miller tells KBHR, There are a ton of crews there, putting out hot spots. That said, he reassures us, The threat to Big Bear is minimal. There is one hot spot that is reportedly visible from the Highway 38 area, and this is directly north of Snow Valley along the ridgeline. The fire, Miller notes, is in the timber and that's what's creating all the smoke. It is one concentrated area. Crews are there, and there is aircraft working it as well. Given today's blue skies in the Big Bear Valley, we will see columns of smoke but again, Miller says, The threat to Big Bear is low.

said by CurtesyFlush :Those of you who live in the jurisdiction of the Orange County Fire Authority, or in a wildland interface area that abuts their jurisdiction, might want to ask Chief Prather "What happened to the dozers?" Back when it was known as Orange County Fire Dept, they owned and operated two fire dozers and transports. For the clueless, dozers can cut a lot of fireline in a short amount of time. I know they have at least one around, I saw a few days before the fires.
I'll be seeing his side-kick, Capt. Stephen Miller, most likely next week. I'll see what I can dig up. -- [[Your signature here]] |

as of 2:20pm today...
The Santiago fire is again sweeping toward Silverado Canyon, and fire officials warned that it could be within minutes of coming over the ridgelines there. Orange County Sheriff's deputies were going through the canyon to evacuate any remaining holdouts.
The fire had been bulling its way through the isolated wilderness of the Cleveland National Forest, and fire officials said earlier in the day that it no longer appeared to pose an immediate threat to homes. But now, it was once again on the move to the north, and once again menacing Silverado Canyon.
A strike team of nearly 200 firefighters was in the canyon, their only orders to protect the homes there. The fire appeared to be threatening the back end of the canyon, where there are at least 100 homes. -- 2b or not 2b -- none of this really matters |

Today has to be one of the worst air quality days I have seen in many decades, the good news is that during the last hour the wind started out of the west and it really cooled down and i can see blue sky with high clouds and behind it a pretty heavy marine layer pushing in as far as WeHo and Beverly Hills |

| Yeah Sunset, I noticed the same thing yesterday when the breezes quit. All the smoke had no place to go so it all came down on the Valley and we were choked with smoke far worse than when the fires were going bigtime.
Well I'll breathe smoke here in Northridge if it means the firefighters can have a better shot at quenching the fires. I'm glad the winds died. |

| reply to 81399672 20% chance of light showers and fire tornado's
said by 81399672 :well that sound not to bad, except for no rain. Remember that cut off low I was talking about a couple of days ago, well it is moving this way so there is a 20% chance of light showers over the Mt's and inland valleys, and it will keep the temps down but more importantly the humidity and dew point will go back up giving fire fighters a real chance to get a handle on all of the fires.
Still looking at a weak off shore flow on Monday and Tuesday after the cut off low moves through.

Fire near Silverado has not descended into town ... - 9:23 a.m.
The fire along the ridgeline near Silverado was still burning this morning but had not descended into town, Orange County Fire Officials said. Flames are estimated roughly to be about three miles up Maple Springs road from the checkpoint at the end of Silverado Canyon road, about 3,000 feet above the town. Fire officials said that they are seeing "up-canyon" winds during the day, that tend to push the flames away from town. But houses in the town had been sprayed with fire-retardant and residents are under mandatory evacuation order. To the northeast, the fire was still moving towards the main divide and the Riverside County line but had not crossed county lines overnight. Fire officials said that 18 bulldozers crews dug about five miles of firebreak lines overnight near the Orange County and Riverside lines but had another ten miles still to dig. Air drops of flame retardant reinforced about 2.5 miles of fire lines near the county border.
